Hello Kealing Families,


It was a treat seeing so many students participate in New Hornet Camp this week.  There was great attendance, so much fun taking place and each breakout room was filled with excitement for the new school year to begin. Our teachers led our new students through a variety of activities that will help them get adjusted to life as a Hornet. 


As you may have heard, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted Thursday evening to delay the start of school to September 8th. This will allow Kealing staff additional time to survey students’ technology needs, prepare for virtual learning, and continue developing safety measures for our students and staff to eventually return to the building. Even with the new start date, not much will change from information you have previously received. Important reminders include:

  • All learning will take place virtually for the first four weeks of school (Sept. 8 - Oct. 5th)

  • Our bell schedule will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous learning.  However, our existing bell schedule will be adjusted for an additional 10 minutes and will be shared soon.

  • Attendance is REQUIRED for all synchronous classes.

As additional information comes in, we will be sure to share it with you. 


Over the weekend, you and your student should have received an email with your student’s schedule.  If your student has: a missing period, notice they are enrolled in a class they have already successfully completed, all core classes are on the same day, or missing a requested/required language, please have them request a “Schedule Verification” VIRTUAL meeting with their counselor. This is done by completing the appropriate grade level form:

Schedule verifications will take place from 9:00am - 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 6:00pm on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12.  Zoom links to meet with counselors virtually will be sent upon submission of the appointment form.  Elective change requests will not be addressed at this time or prior to the start of school.  Please allow our team time to respond to all scheduling inquiries as priority will lie first with families scheduling an appointment. 


Also, this week we will host virtual Parent Orientation and a Meet & Greet with Mr. Estes, our new Interim Principal.  Parent Orientation is Monday, August 10th at the following times:  10am, 2pm, 5pm, 6:30pm (Spanish).  We’d love for you to attend one of these sessions and ask questions through our live chat!  Links for both events will be posted on the Kealing Middle School website homepage.  If you are unable to attend one of these live sessions, orientation videos will be made available on the website within the week.

Parent Tech Request Forms 

Parents can now submit a TECHNOLOGY REQUEST within the AISD Parent Cloud.  Please search for the “Technology Distribution” tile and submit a request specifying the type of device(s) needed. Paper forms can also be found here in ENGLISH and SPANISH and will be available during on-site registration during the week of August 10th. Please Mrs. Romero, christina.romero@austinisd.org if you have any questions or need assistance submitting a technology request.


Kealing Virtual Learning Plans

Curious how Kealing’s online learning will work this school year?  Please take a look at our plans and potential bell schedule during  virtual learning. (PLEASE NOTE: Bell schedule times will shift as we add an additional 10 minutes to our schedule).  As policies and guidelines change, we will appreciate all stakeholders’ support and flexibility as we may adapt pieces of these plans to better meet our student’s needs.  Here are our current plans available in ENGLISH and in SPANISH.


Required Summer Assignments 

All Kealing students have required summer assignments in reading and mathematics. These are critical in mitigating the impact of the COVID slide and helping us start the 2020-2021 school year well.  Click here for information on where to find your specific summer assignments.  Please be sure to check-in with your student to see if they have completed both.
