Kealing Broadcast Television is a student developed news program that airs every Tuesday through Advisory.  This year's news team is learning the tricks of the trade and will be broadcasting in about four weeks. We'll post the news in the Student Life section and in Hornet Herald every week once it's up and running.

During the 2016-2017 School Year, we had a strong group of Kealing PTA Business Supporters! We are now kicking off the program for the 2017-2018 school year.

"Be the One" Presentation for 7th Grade
The Kealing Guidance Department made presentations to all 7th grade students through advisory beginning on September 19th thru the 21st. The goal is to instruct them on how they could “Be the One” to help a friend who is struggling with depression or hurting themselves. The presentation explains the symptoms of depression, signs of depression or suicidal thought in another person, ways to help friends cope if they are sad or possibly struggling with depression and finally when and how to get help from adults. Counselors encouraged all students to tell an adult if someone expressed thoughts of hurting themselves; this includes telling their parents, especially if they learn of a student’s thoughts outside of the school setting.

Counselors also shared with students the number to call a help hotline, the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine, at 1 (800) 273- TALK. or to text CONNECT to 741741 to chat with a crisis counselor. Please feel free to pass this information onto others. If your student communicates to you that one of their friends is having suicidal thoughts. Please either contact their parents or the police, who have mental health officers that can check on them in their home. All it takes is one person to “Be the One” to save another’s life.

High School Presentations for 8th Grade Students
The Kealing Guidance Department is excited to announce that AISD high schools will be visiting our campus to give brief presentations during advisory in lieu of a high school fair.  Each high school will be given the opportunity to bring representatives to speak on the school’s behalf, provide a power point and have pamphlets/information available at the end to distribute to students. Please see the schedule below for visits.
  • October 11, 2017: LBJ-Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy (Magnet) & Travis Early College High School
  • October 18, 2017: Bowie, Anderson & Akins HS
  • October 25, 2017: Crockett, McCallum, LBJ Early College High School
We are waiting to hear from Eastside Memorial Early College High School, Lanier, Reagan Early College High School. When we know the dates of their visit we will post it on our website:

Kealing Ultimate Frisbee Parent Volunteers needed
We (Coach Crouch, Kepner, and Natenberg) are excited to extend the ultimate frisbee season into the fall this year in order to provide more time for players to improve their skills and play.

Who: All grade levels, all programs, all genders. No prior playing experience needed.
When: Thursdays from 2:50 to 4:30pm, beginning September 14th and ending on November 9th.
Where: Kealing Middle School & Rosewood Park
Why: Because ultimate is awesome!

We are limiting the fall practices to 40 students because only one coach will be in attendance at each practice. We would love your help with transporting the players from Kealing to Rosewood Park and supervising during practice.** One parent volunteer per week would go a long way in helping us make these practices a great experience for all the players.

Email Coach Natenberg if you can volunteer your time. Please include the date(s) you can help and your cell phone number to make day of communication easier.

Community Dinner
The PTA is hosting a community dinner on October 5th at 6pm in the Kealing cafeteria.  This is a wonderful way to extend your Kealing network and build a stronger Kealing family.  This is a free event and we hope to see you there!  (If you’d like to contribute to the dinner, please visit our sign-up.)

Is your student creative?  Do they enjoy photography, music, drawing, painting, writing or dancing?  Encourage them to enter our reflections contest!  Last year we had multiple Kealing students reach the state level of competition.  National winners earn scholarships!

Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for nearly 50 years. Through the efforts of our Local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. This year’s theme is “Within Reach”.

Eligible students may enter any or all of the six art categories. Multiple entries within a single arts category are permitted.  Each entry must be the original work of one student and created specifically for the Reflections program based on the national theme. Each entry must also conform to the guidelines developed by the National PTA.

KMAG Meeting
Please come to our next KMAG meeting September 28th at 7:30 am in the library. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Shoaf from the Social Studies department. He will follow up on Mr. Natenberg's discussion last week of World Cultures, curriculum writing, and adjustments to Kealing. Please join us!!!!
KMAG No Hassle Curriculum and Teacher Support Drive - LAST WEEK
As promised, we are in the final week of the KMAG Curriculum Donation and Teacher Support Drive! We would like to thank the 149 families who have donated $29,500. So far, only 20 % of KMAG families have donated. If you have not had a chance to give, please ask yourself what amount you can give to support our excellent magnet programming and teaching staff. Every donation matters! Our faculty relies on additional funding to bring countless classroom and extra-curricular activities to our students and to facilitate instruction in the classroom. This year KMAG hopes to purchase new overhead projectors and classroom printers to replace and supplement outdated and non-repairable equipment.  Please note that we accept workplace matching donations as well.

KMAG supports unique curriculum programs, like the student-led project described in the video below. Thanks to the generosity of Kealing families, students had the resources to create a student-directed LED-light display, start to finish, with the encouragement and guidance of Kealing faculty who worked with KMAG to give them that opportunity.  Watching this video, you can see that even small contributions can come together to make a BIG difference for your kids.

Volunteers Needed
Please help! The KMAG Shadowing program is a parent- volunteer run program that pairs up prospective KMS Magnet applicants with current KMS Magnet students. This opportunity for the student to experience the Magnet program for a day has been a beneficial tool that many prospective Magnet students and their parents have used to help them decide if the Magnet program is right for their family. The Shadowing Committee needs a couple people willing to shadow the committee this year in order to take over next year. At least one chair-person is needed for this program, but it can be run by co-chairs. The Shadowing program also need volunteers to: run the Sign-up Genius for volunteers during shadowing in January/February, act as our Spanish contact liaison for our Spanish- speaking applicant families, be the head morning check-in Wrangler, and to be the Head Afternoon Wrangler. Please contact Gina Vance if you are interested in any of these positions.
