Hornet Herald - September 22, 2019

posted Sep 23, 2019, 4:06 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Sep 23, 2019, 4:10 AM ]
Hi Hornets,

As many of you are aware, students around the globe participated in protests Friday aiming to get world leaders to take action on climate change. As one of the closest secondary campuses to the Texas State Capitol, our students are a stone’s throw from a critical place in our democracy. During events like this one, our primary goals are to keep students safe, on campus, and engaged in learning. Be sure that your students know your expectations in case of protest, walkout, or rally at the Capitol. While we have systems in place to notify parents and may follow students when staff is available, these are not school sanctioned or sponsored events.

I know that democracy is not a spectator sport and applaud students for wanting to actively participate. Talk with your students about other ways they can support change in the areas that matter to them. It takes time and commitment. They’re not too young to help!

Chevron Fuel Your School Program Is Coming to Austin ISD!
This October, Chevron’s Fuel Your School program will donate $1 for every fuel purchase of at least 8 gallons at participating Chevron and Texaco stations in Austin. Up to $375,000 will be donated directly to the Donors Choose crowdfunding platform to fund AISD teacher projects. Over the next few weeks I’ll let you know which Kealing projects are popping up on Donors Choose.
How can you help? Choose carefully when you fuel up! Austin area parents, families, and community members may purchase at least 8 gallons of fuel at Chevron and Texaco-branded stations in Austin from October 1-31. Chevron will donate $1 of each purchase to Donors Choose, which will then help fund teacher projects. In addition, everyone is invited to donate directly to projects on Donors Choose during this period.

KMAG No Hassle Fundraiser – Home Stretch!
The KMAG No Hassle Fundraiser is winding down and we need your help in meeting this year’s goals! So far the fundraiser has brought in over $51,000 that will support classroom materials, professional learning for teachers, and extra-curricular activities. Every dollar counts so give if you can. Also, remember to see if your company will pitch in since a number of Austin companies offer matching funds when families give to schools. This is another way for you to help us meet our goals.

That’s all for this week!

Austin ISD would like your feedback on the newly written Human Sexuality and Responsibility lessons for grades sixth through eighth. Lessons and a feedback survey will be posted on the Parent Cloud from September 18th-25th. Middle school lessons will be revised based on feedback. Elementary lessons have already been revised from feedback provided last May.

Families must have an enrolled student in AISD and must have a Parent Cloud account to be able to review lessons and provide feedback. Please visit the AISD website, How to Create a Parent Cloud Account, for more information. Once in the Parent Cloud, look for the MS HSR Lesson Review Tile. Please contact the Parent Support line at 512-414-9187 if you need assistance creating an account.

Hassle the NO Hassle!
KMAG No Hassle Curriculum and Teacher Support Drive -

As promised, we are in the final week of the KMAG Curriculum Donation and Teacher Support Drive! We would like to thank the 330+ families who have donated $51,000. If you have not had a chance to give, please ask yourself what amount you can give to support our excellent magnet programming and teaching staff. Every donation matters! Our faculty relies on additional funding to bring countless classroom and extra-curricular activities to our students and to facilitate instruction in the classroom. This year KMAG hopes to purchase new overhead projectors and classroom printers to replace and supplement outdated and non-repairable equipment. Please note that we accept workplace matching donations as well.

To learn more and to donate visit our website.  We appreciate every dollar you give! Thank you for your support.
