Hornet Herald - September 20, 2020

posted Sep 20, 2020, 2:34 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

I hope you all were able to get outdoors this weekend and enjoy the cooler weather since predictions are calling for rain this week. My family and I appreciated the fresh air while walking trails this yesterday and there were no complaints about the cooler weather.

This Wednesday, Kealing staff is excited to welcome our families to Back to School Night. Similar to what students experience, Back to School Night will consist of both asynchronous and synchronous opportunities to engage with your child’s teacher.

Tomorrow you will receive an email with your child’s schedule along with introduction videos from their teachers. You can watch these videos as your schedule allows (asynchronously) and then submit questions to the google form, attached in the email. Kealing staff will answer questions (synchronously) during a livestream teacher panel Wednesday evening. You can access the livestream on the front page of our website.

Heads ups Hornets: Beginning this week teachers will begin providing new learning tasks on Fridays which students are required to complete asynchronously. The Friday bell schedule has been updated to provide a guide for students to plan which course lessons to work on and when. As a reminder, Advisory attendance is required and Office Hours, by departments, will continue to be assigned and available to students who need additional support.

Last week, the district sent out communication outlining plans for reopening campuses on October 5th. You also should have received a survey requesting your family to indicate your preference on continuing at home learning or opting to return to campus. There are many reasons families will decide to remain at home or send their students back to campus. I would like to share with you and your family, what to expect with on-campus learning in case you have any questions.

  • Families will need to complete the AISD COVID-19 Screener prior to arriving on campus. Upon arrival, Kealing staff will ask to view your student’s results and take our Hornets’ temperature.

  • Students who pass the Health Screener will immediately be escorted to their classroom and remain there for the day.

  • All classes will continue to be taught virtually. Students will continue utilizing BLEND and Zoom to access their teachers and learning opportunities.

  • The teacher or staff member assigned to your student’s classroom are teaching their own classes. Students will continue to rely on their online teachers for assistance.

  • Students will remain in their classrooms during meal times.

  • Students and staff are required to appropriately wear masks, covering the nose, mouth and chin while on campus.

  • PPE (face masks, hand sanitizer, desk shields, gloves, etc.) will be provided to each classroom

  • Currently, classrooms are set up to allow up to nine students in a classroom to allow for social distancing.

  • Breaks will be built in to allow students the chance to go outside when feasible.

  • Dismissals will be staggered to maintain social distancing in the hallways

Your response to the district’s is extremely important as we begin planning for October 5th. You can access the survey by clicking this link The survey locks once you have submitted your responses. If you need the survey to be reopened, you can email

As you can see, there are many things taking place at Kealing, as administration and staff continue to support our students virtually and prepare for the reopening of our campus. We appreciate the support and kind emails we are receiving from our Hornet families. We can definitely feel the LOVE.

See you all Wednesday!

Mr. Estes

Kealing PTA
TWO programs, ONE school, ONE parent organization. Our PTA is committed to serving ALL Kealing students, meeting the needs of ALL Kealing Parents, and supporting ALL Kealing faculty and staff. Our motto this year is Kealing STRONG! Keep Kealing STRONG by joining the Kealing PTA TODAY!

No-Fuss Fundraiser
Kealing's 'No-Fuss' fundraiser is off-and-running!  Prior to the 1st day of school, over 100 families had donated more than $12,000 - see PTA website for the latest.  What an amazing testament to Kealing's school spirit and all the parents involved.  Over the next four weeks, as we march towards our goal of $55,000, we will also be sharing stories, insights, and particulars that highlight Kealing's school spirit and its wonderful school community.   As for the fundraiser - donating via our PTA link is quick, easy, and can be done at any time you choose.   'No Fuss' means you should not be troubled by this.  Donate what you can, when you can.  'No Fuss' also means that funds will be collected without the added trouble of students selling wrapping paper, candy, or other items.  We hope that you can help support this effort, where 100% of your donation goes directly to support Kealing's students, staff, and school community.
Stay tuned! Throughout the fundraiser, we will be updating the Hornet Herald or using School Messenger to share various tidbits about our wonderful school and what makes Kealing so special.
Thank you to all those that have already donated! Let's keep it going!

We have restocked sizes in our popular Kealing cotton hoodies! Order yours today along with other Kealing swag including our new trucker hat at Pick up is at Kealing the first Thursday and Friday of each month, which is October 1st and 2nd for next month.

Learning Preference Survey

The current survey will provide information to campus principals regarding all students enrolled for the 20-21 school year. This information is important so that we can plan for your child to continue accessing learning opportunities at-home or by returning to school. Please respond to this survey for each of your students. Your decision at this time is needed so we can prepare accordingly. You can access the survey by visiting

iReady Diagnostic

This week, all ELA and Math teachers will be administering (remotely) a diagnostic assessment in iReady. This online program replaces Istation assessments and assignments. The diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs.

There are two diagnostics, one for reading and a separate one for math. You can learn more about how to support your student(s) with the iReady diagnostic by clicking here.

Please encourage your child to try their best on the diagnostic. The data we receive, will allow teachers to provide interventions or enrichment opportunities for students based on the results.

2020 Census
If you have not done so, please take a moment to complete the 2020 Census. Make sure the whole family is counted. Every adult and every child is included in the 2020 Census Count. You can respond online, by phone or mail. You can visit this website for more information.

Fall Athletics

Kealing Middle School staff and coaches understand the significance being involved in extra-curricular activities play in a student's overall development. Being a member of an athletic team allow students to create goals, understand the importance of teamwork, and character development.

As much as we would love to be back on the field/court this fall, our main goal is to protect the health and safety of our students and staff. With this in mind, we have decided not to participate in strength and condition or athletic practices while in the virtual learning setting. As we begin phasing students back into the building, Kealing administration and athletic coaches will examine data, safety protocols, and available transportation to determine Kealing's athletic participation moving forward.

As decisions are made, we will be sure to communicate them with our students and families.
