Hornet Herald - September 15, 2019

Hey Hornets!

Some educators and healthcare professionals will tell you with absolute certainty that strange things happen during full moons. This past Friday was the 13th and a full moon so if you are superstitious, you should have been worried for us all! I am pleased to report that there was no howling and no other oddities to report (well not anymore than is typical for middle schoolers). It was another week of learning and positive energy in our classrooms. We reminded students about Homework Hiatus and I hope you all took advantage of the time this weekend. I definitely enjoyed the under 100 degree temperatures!

Last week we started our Active Day rotations so your students will be able to get some energy out once a week in a variety of spaces. The park and fields are a hit so if you have extra soccer balls, footballs, or frisbees that you would like to donate, please send them to the Program Office. Our students will put them to good use during the active time. Hydration is key so encourage your students to bring water bottles to school each day.

That's all for this week!

Mathcounts club is starting!
The Mathcounts club will have its first meeting after school in Room 203 on Tuesday, September 17th from 2:45-4:15.  Any students who enjoy math and problem solving are welcome to attend.  No sign up needed - just come to enjoy the fun, learning, and snacks!  If you aren't able to make it to our first meeting, you can come on a future Tuesday afternoon.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Strickland.

HUMAN SEXUALITY CURRICULUM
Austin ISD would like your feedback on the newly written Human Sexuality and Responsibility lessons for grades sixth through eighth. Lessons and a feedback survey will be posted on the Parent Cloud from September 18th-25th. Middle school lessons will be revised based on feedback. Elementary lessons have already been revised from feedback provided last May.

Families must have an enrolled student in AISD and must have a Parent Cloud account to be able to review lessons and provide feedback. Please visit the AISD website, How to Create a Parent Cloud Account, for more information. Once in the Parent Cloud, look for the MS HSR Lesson Review Tile. Please contact the Parent Support line at 512-414-9187 if you need assistance creating an account.

Additionally, AISD is offering two meetings for families who need Spanish and Arabic interpretation. These meetings will be held at Navarro High School (formerly Lanier) on September 17 and Austin High School on September 19. Both meetings are from 6-8 p.m. If you are in need of another language, please contact Michele Rusnak , Health and Physical Education Supervisor, by Friday (9/13), at michele.rusnak@austinisd.org.

Reflections
Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for 50 years. Through the efforts of our Local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts.

With positive recognition as the focus of this program, rather than competition, students of all ages and abilities can experience the benefits of creative expression and help in finding their own voice in telling their unique story.

This year’s theme is “Look Within” and the deadline will be the end of October.
See www.kealingpta.org for the guidelines and rules.

Express your artistic talent and tell us what's within reach through Reflections!
