Hornet Herald - November 11, 2019

posted Nov 10, 2019, 5:52 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Nov 12, 2019, 3:23 AM ]

Hey Hornets,

Last week was a busy one!

Austin ISD high schools were on campus during lunch periods Monday, Wednesday, and Friday last week. Eighth grade students had an opportunity to visit them and ask questions. If you are an 8th grade parent, keep your ear to the ground for high school information. Now is the time to be talking to your 8th graders about plans for next year.

Thursday, our Theater One Act Play had a second place UIL zone showing and brought home a number of medals. It was tight and they came in about 30 seconds under the time limit. The phenomenal show in the end was saved by incredible stage management. Kudos to all of the students and Ms. Pena-Brooks for the work that went into this performance!

Thursday evening marked another Magnet Showcase. Families were lined up before 5:00 pm like the running of the bulls, held in place by a rope and two committed parent volunteers. Altogether, our parent volunteers helped check in over 500 prospective families. Student volunteers were stellar representatives of Kealing throughout the evening and the KMS Fine Arts department put on a show. Our staff had fun displaying all that magnet program has to offer and who we are as a school.

Friday we had a pretty full house for the choir-sponsored fall festival. The students had a great time and a good number of pies were thrown at Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Drummond, Ms. Scott, and Ms. Strickland. They were good sports but I am sure they had dreams (or nightmares) of whipped cream this weekend. The haunted hallway was a hit, face-painting resulted in some magic, and there was a lot more to see and do.

It took a lot of parent support to successfully tackle all of last week’s events. Thanks to all parents who volunteered on campus, dropped off materials, served as taxi drivers, and cheered students on throughout the week. We could not have done it without you!

Have a great week!

Central Texas Food Bank Food Drive
Students in the Food for Thought elective have researched hunger in Austin and around the world. Students have also researched ways they can help end hunger. How do I check my student’s grades and attendance?

The system you may hear teachers refer to as TEAMs has a parent interface often referred to as ParentConnect or Parent Self Serve. It can be accessed here and you must have an Austin ISD Cloud login to access the system. This is the place to view live attendance and most up-to-date grades. If you have trouble accessing the system, feel free to reach out to the technology support line by calling 512-414-9187. Support is available weekdays from 7 am - 5 pm. You may also send an email to parenttechsupport@austinisd.org.

NJHS Induction Info
New National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) members were added to our blend course on Thursday, November 7th. Please accept your invitation to the blend course ASAP.
