Good afternoon Hornet Families,

Last week was an exciting week marked by long nights and successful outings by many of our students. The girls' soccer team fought hard and placed second in the zone. The final game at House Park was a nail biter and Ms. Jaworski is proud of a strong season. We also ended the boys' basketball season this week with a 1st place finish for the 7th grade boys and a 3rd place finish for the 8th grade boys. Our Orchestra students participated in UIL competition this week and all three groups brought home all 1's. It was a great showing and they smiled with their chests held high when they returned to campus.

This week we'll having a week of learning as we try to keep the Spring Break energy contained. We also have a busy CAC Meeting Agenda since we will be looking at the budget and staffing for the 2018-2019 school year along with our plans for District of Innovation professional development days. The district's budgetary realities due impact campuses and may change the way we do some things, so these conversations and the resulting decisions are important for our students and staff. If you are around and want to stop by to learn more, we'll be meeting in the library Thursday at 4:00 pm.

Mark your calendar for Kealing Center Stage, our PTA's primary fundraiser of the year. The PTA supports instructional materials, professional development, new technology, field trips, and many other things that help improve the learning experience for our students. We'll be meeting at the Thinkery on April 7 for a fun evening with members of the Kealing community in support of our PTA and our students. Tickets will be on sale after the break and I hope to see you there!

We will be closing the building this Friday at 3:00 pm to allow our staff to get their much-needed Spring Break started. There will be no after school events so please make sure you have made arrangements.

Register to be a Kealing Middle School Volunteer
All individuals interested in volunteering at Kealing Middle School must register as a Kealing school-based volunteer and complete a background check through Austin Partners In Education. For more information, contact Dee Gonzales or 512-414-6700.

Handbags For Hope
In conjunction with the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Advocacy Project, Kealing will be participating in the 11th Annual Handbags For Hope campaign drive. Please donate your gently used (or new) purses which will be delivered to women shelters across the State of Texas. The Texas Advocacy Project has distributed more than 39,000 bags through Handbags for Hope to women in need since it first launched 11 years ago. Working with the children's programming coordinators at the shelters, they will offer them to the children who will select a handbag to give to their mother on Mother's Day. Women in the shelter who don't have children, will be able to choose a handbag for themselves. Inside each handbag, these women will find hotline numbers for the Texas Advocacy Project allowing them to access their completely free legal services. The campaign will run from February 21, 2018 - April 2, 2018. Let's show the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Advocacy Project that the Kealing Hornets supports this drive by collecting as many purses as possible to donate.

KMAG Meeting
Our next KMAG meeting will be Thursday March 8 at 7:30am in the Kealing library. Our speakers will be Sarah Waggoner from the English Department and Tania Tasneem from the Science Department. Please join us!

A BIG Thank you to Shadow Wranglers!
The Kealing Magnet program would like to thank the many parents who volunteered in the mornings and afternoons to help our incoming students be able to shadow our current Kealing students. Your help was essential to making the shadowing program this past month a BIG success! Thank you!
 OPPORTUNITIES ON OTHER CAMPUSES
Try outs for McCallum Blue Brigade
Any incoming 9th graders interested in trying out for McCallum drill team/Blue Brigade need to attend one of the meeting with a parent to get all necessary information. Pick one date- March 5th or March 7th @ 6:00pm  at McCallum, Portable P10 (by the baseball field)

McCallum Youth Dance Company presents The Butterfly Effect on March 23rd and 24th
Join the dancers of the McCallum Youth Dance Company as they share through movement the concept of the Butterfly Effect, where small causes can have larger effects.  Live musical accompaniment will be featured in two dances, including one original composition written just for this concert. Dance styles include flamenco, modern, contemporary, and contemporary ballet.  Guest choreographers include Olivia Chacon with Flamencura Music and Dance, Rachel Meador, Kelsey Oliver, Wendy Rucci, Kirstan Clifford, and Lisa Kobdish. The concert, showcasing the talents of more than 50 dancers, runs for two nights, March 23rd and 24th at 7 pm at the McCallum Arts Center at 5600 Sunshine Dr. Tickets are $7 for students, $10 for seniors and $12 for adults and are available for purchase at the door or online.

2018/2019 PTA Exec Board Recruitment Opportunities
PTA is looking to fill next years exec board! Please take a moment and look at the open positions. We need a full team to support our students to our full extent!  Previous board experience is not required. We're looking for anyone who is a concerned part of our KMS community! If you'd be interested/have questions, please email vp1@kealingpta.org.

All KMS PTA Executive Board Members are expected to attend monthly board meetings (usually Tuesday mornings at 7:30am) and, when possible, general PTA meetings. They also need to complete required PTA training and forms (such as signing the conflict of interest policy). PTA Board members agree to support the mission of PTA.
Roles Description of Duties:

President 
  • Prepares agendas for PTA board and general meetings and leads the meetings
  • Oversees procedural and legal requirements 
  • Regularly communicates with principal
  • Oversees PTA communications with the membership, other KMS families, and the school
  • Attends the monthly Vertical Team and ACPTA meetings throughout the year
  • Notes: Primary duty is to lead the organization and stay in touch with board members and members to make sure things happen that are supposed to happen. More work at the beginning and end of the year.
Vice President 
  • Acts as aide to the president and presides over meetings when the president cannot attend. Additionally, the Vice President can adopt a special area to lead such as community outreach or volunteer coordination.
  • Supports President in arranging speakers and logistics for membership meetings and principal coffees 
  • Time commitment: Approximately 5 hours/month
 Treasurer 
  • Oversees finances of the organization
  • Keeps the checking account books, make all the deposits, and write all the checks from the PTA, cosigned by the PTA President
  • Presents a financial report at the board and general meetings each month
  • Pays the PTA’s insurance and file the PTA tax returns
  • Collects the membership payments & submit membership info and dues to Texas PTA 
  • Time commitment: There is a flurry of activity at the beginning of the year with the membership drive. At the height of the activity, the treasurer spends about 3-5 hours/ week. After November, it slows down to about four hours a month. Then in April, the Kealing Center Stage requires around 3 hours/week.
  • Qualifications: Ideally, at least one year experience as treasurer for another organization, or a background in accounting or financial record keeping.

Secretary 
  • Records minutes and attendance at monthly board and general meetings.
  • Maintains PTA records such as bylaws, required officer forms, and the membership list.
  • Time commitment: Approximately 5 hours/month
Parliamentarian 
  • Advises the presiding officers on questions of parliamentary procedures and issues pertaining to bylaws compliance. No voting rights.
  • Time commitment: Approx. 3 hours/month (attending board and membership meetings)
 ACPTA Representative (2) 
  • Attends regular monthly Austin Council of PTA meetings and periodic vertical team meetings, and reports back to the KMS PTA board.
CAC Representative 
  • Attends CAC meetings and reports to the PTA board. Appointed by PTA President.
Programs Chair 
  • Chairs the program committee, which works with the school administration to put together educational programs for Kealing families. Oversees the following subcommittees: Kealing Men, Parent Education, Reflections, Teacher Appreciation, and CATCH.
Environmental Chair 
  • Chairs the environmental committee, which helps Kealing be a greener campus and focus efforts around rethinking, reducing, recycling, and beautifying the school building and its grounds. The chair works with volunteers to lead a number of environmental-oriented projects at the school. Prior projects have included school grounds work days, recycling projects, and the maintenance of the urban garden at the school.
Fundraising Chair 
  • Chairs the fundraising committee and oversees the fundraising activities of the PTA to support our Kealing teachers and campus, including classroom technology, field trips, and teaching tools. The fundraising chair also oversees the following three subcommittees: Kealing Center Stage, No Cost, and Spirit Wear. The Kealing Fundraising Committee leads a number of activities to raise funds to support our Kealing teachers and campus, including classroom technology, field trips, and teaching tools.
