Hey Hornets!
This week will sprinkle us all with special bits of excitement so I hope you are all wearing your dancing shoes!
Wednesday and Thursday will be atypical. Dr. Terrence Roberts, a member of the Little Rock Nine, will be coming to participate in a seminar with our 7th grade students. We are lucky to have living history on our campus as our students learn about Civil Rights and Social Justice through Social Studies and Language Arts content. 7th grade Magnet students will also take a trip to The Science Mill so the pair of days will be packed.
Friday is the Spring Fling dance and we hope to see our students there to hang out with friends or battle on the dance floor. They work hard together daily and we believe it’s important for them to take time out to have fun with each other too. Wristbands are $5 and will be sold Friday during lunches and at the door.
Our students are not the only ones with moves……….Kealing teachers have been known to cut a rug. Don’t believe me? Come check them out at Kealing Center Stage from 7:00-10:30 pm on April 6 at the Thinkery. I think last week I called our entertainment for the evening The Silent Notebooks. Forgive me because The SPIRAL Notebooks is a band made up of dancing and singing Kealing staff members. They are far from silent and will certainly put on a show! Kealing Center Stage is our PTA’s largest fundraiser and this effort is vital in supporting many of the opportunities available at Kealing. More than anything though, this is an adult-only opportunity to build community with Hornet families, old and new. I look forwarding to seeing you there!
In addition to all of the fun I have shared, we have some important business to tend to this week.
In Science classes, Kealing students will participate in the Austin ISD human sexuality unit of study during the month of May. This Tuesday I will be available in the Library from 5:00 – 6:00 pm providing information about the program so feel free to join me to learn more. Student opt-out forms will be coming home through science teachers this week.
The Magnet application period is over and we are welcoming over 300 new Magnet students to the program next year. This weekend will be the first new Magnet celebration so we look forward to seeing some of our future Hornets on campus. We are also thrilled to be welcoming a large class of new Academy students so we are expecting to have a full house at KMS next year. Thanks to all of the parents who have volunteered to help us welcome our new families aboard.
After this week, we’ll be winding down to gear up for this year’s first round of STAAR testing. On April 9-10, we will administer the 7th grade STAAR Writing, 8th grade STAAR Math, and 8th grade STAAR Reading assessments. Though there is variation due to the variety in math courses, all 7th and 8th grade students will test on one or both of the testing days. We encourage you all to plan to have a restful weekend as our students prepare to show all they have learned so far this year.
Thanks for reading.
