Hornet Herald - January 26, 2020

posted Jan 26, 2020, 5:26 PM by KMS Hornets
Hello Kealing Families,

Each year, Kealing staff votes to acknowledge members of the team who make Kealing a better place. Ms. Nwosu is the Kealing Attendance Specialist and the 2019-2020 Staff Member of the Year. A long time Austin ISD and Kealing employee, Ms. Nwosu's impact is felt as she uses her expertise to arrange substitutes and account for student absences. Committed to Kealing students well beyond her typical duties, she has applied for two sizeable grants over the past four school years to support student mentoring and attendance recovery. Each day she sees a need and meets a need. We are glad to have Ms. Nwosu on the Kealing staff.

We are thrilled to have Coach Brynie represent Kealing Middle School as the 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year. She has served as a model for Physical Education in AISD, often writing curriculum and mentoring new teachers. In addition to all that comes with P.E. and Athletics, Coach Brynie serves as a campus leader, committing time to giving feedback that helps us better serve our students. The impact that our Physical Education Department has on the health and wellness of our students is immeasurable and we are grateful for Coach Brynie's contributions to this community.

Join me in congratulating these two members of the Kealing Family!

Invictus by all 8th Graders
All Kealing 8th graders will be performing Invictus by William Ernest Henley throughout the first week of February at Kealing Middle School.  Starting Monday, February 3rd, students can be "caught" from 7:25 am until 2:50 pm until Friday, February 7th and asked to recite this poem-in the cafeteria, the hallway, in classes other than English.  Our goal is to have all students embrace a love of poetry and for teachers and administration to join them.  If you would like to learn the poem yourself, a copy is just below.  Once a student recites the poem, he/she will receive a string around her/his wrist.  As a side note, a mural of this poem resides on the courtyard walls at Kealing.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
