Hornet Herald - January 21, 2018

posted Jan 21, 2018, 5:03 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Jan 21, 2018, 5:03 PM ]
Hello Kealing Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend and are looking forwarded to a week of great weather. My family ended the weekend with the final performance of The Sound of Music. If you did not attend one of the three sold-out shows, you missed a treat. Kudos to Ms. Pena-Brooks, Ms. Waggoner, and the host of students who made the show come to life. Job well done!

This week you'll notice a new addition to Hornet Herald. I often find myself fielding questions about the people who make up the amazing team we have at Kealing. So, we have added "Hornet Highlights" which will spotlight different Kealing staff members every week. The first two features are Ms. Henderson and Mr. Webster, so enjoy learning about these members of our crew.

We've kicked off this second semester with a few atypical weeks due to Professional Development and snow. We're counting on this week being the usual length of five days but will still have an altered bell schedule Monday through Friday due to benchmark testing. The benchmark assessments are designed to give us information about the progress our students have made thus far and help us recognize any areas in which we might need to shift our focus moving forward. So, we'll have a quiet testing period in the morning Monday-Thursday followed by an abbreviated schedule. Click here to see the schedule we will follow. Friday will be a normal schedule.

Have a great week!

With warm regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Tell us about the most challenging thing you've ever done.
I moved to Austin after living 20 years in Arlington Texas. I had to basically start my life over again. I had to find new friends, a place to live and things to do.
Tell us about the most challenging thing you've ever done.
Early in my career, I was the permanent sub at McCallum High. There was an ice storm one morning and 12 teachers didn't make it in to work. I had to maintain order for the entire day in those classrooms, literally running door-to-door to take care of issues as they arose. And there were many issues. I don't know what the students learned, but I sure leaned a lot!
No Bad Weather Make Up Days
State legislation now references number of school minutes rather than number  of school days required. Kealing, like many other campuses in AISD, will maintain the necessary number of minutes necessary in spite of bad weather days. So don't be on the lookout for bad weather make-up days for Kealing students. We will not have any!
