Yearbook Week - Be "In The Moment"

Celebrate this year's yearbook theme " In the Moment" by a week of dress up days. Monday- National "No Brainer Day" celebrate dressing as your inner "nerd" 
Tuesday - National "Public Sleeping Day" celebrate by wearing PJ's (dress code appropriate) 
Wednesday. National "World Compliment Day" celebrate by dressing like your teacher Thursday - National "Old Stuff Day" celebrate by dressing as your favorite decade

It's Time For Some Tennis!
Are you interested in trying out for the Kealing Tennis Team?  If so, stop by to visit Ms. Morphis in Room 221 to pick up tryout information.  Tryouts are underway this week!

Bike Club
Bike Club resumed on Thurs Feb 23 with an orientation for the new bike club members (required for participation in group rides) and a bike skill clinic. Bike club group rides for those who have completed the orientation will resume on Thur, Mar 22, 2017. See Mr Shoaf (Rm 516) or Mr Hendrex ( Rm 215) for questions and to pick up a release form that must be signed an returned prior to participation in the group rides.

NAEP Testing - February 28, 2017
Kealing Middle School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/28/17. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessment because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public. 

Your 8th grade student may be selected to take a mathematics or reading assessment. The assessment also asks students questions about their daily routine and their educational experiences. For example, students are asked if there is a computer at home and about the amount of reading they do. Student responses are anonymous, and they provide context and meaning to the assessment results. Please visit to review sample questions. 

The assessment takes about 90 to 120 minutes for most students. The results are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347). The information collected is used for statistical purposes only. Your child’s grades will not be affected. Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.

Model UN
The Middle School Model UN convention (MUNJA) will take place on May 16, 2017. In Model United Nations students participate in simulations through which they learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Prep meetings will begin on Tuesday, April 11th from 3-4pm in room 215. Listen for announcements starting in late March, or see Mr. Hendrex or Mr. Shoaf for more details.

8th Grade Parents - Mark Your Calendars!
February 28th- National Assessment on Educational Progress (NAEP)- Random selection of 8th graders. Students will be notified February 1st with a note in class. 
  • May 30th- 8th Grade Field Trip to Shady Springs (All Day) 
  • June 1st - 8th Grade Celebration @ Delco Center (Evening) 
Every 8th grader is required, by the district, to complete a choice sheet/four year plan/endorsement selection with their zoned high school. Each school will send counselors who will explain and assist students in completing their choice sheet/four year plan online. The students will also complete a hard copy version which they are required to get signed by a parent/guardian and return to Ms. Lopez, the 8th grade counselor. Please try to ensure that your student is present to meet with their zoned school. Schools who are already scheduled are listed below. If a student is accepted into a specialized program at a high school, like LASA, they will complete the four year plan at a date determined by the program; but they are still encouraged to complete the zoned school’s four year plan. If your school is not scheduled yet, there will be communication sent out when their date is confirmed.

PTA Presentation - Hazards of Digital Media
On March 23rd, the PTA will be hosting an evening presentation from 6-8pm for Kealing families on the hazards of digital media for middle schoolers. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend. Note: The PTA will not be meeting this Thursday morning.

PTA Nominations Committee
The Kealing PTA is looking for volunteers from both the Academy and Magnet programs to serve on our nominations committee this spring. The nominations committee is responsible for recruiting and selecting a slate of officers to serve on the PTA board near year. The committee will present its recommendations to PTA members for a vote at our April meeting. This is a short-term commitment (starting March 24th and ending April 20th), involving 2-3 meetings and assistance reaching out to 6th and 7th grade parents. Please consider joining this important committee to help select our PTA leaders for next year.

March for Education
Grab your sneakers and join your friends for a walk from Kealing Middle School to Rally Day at the Capitol. Pass the word – EVERYONE from any AISD school community is invited to walk with us! We’re planning a fun event with others who care about public education in Texas. An early group will arrive in time to participate in all of the day’s events. A second group will get there in time for the main event: the Texas PTA Rally on the Capitol Steps. Before the walks, you will have a chance to learn more about the issues and make signs for the rally. We will have materials, so bring your creativity!
WHERE DO WE START? Kealing Middle School is at 1607 Pennsylvania Avenue. That’s 1.2 miles by foot from the Texas Capitol. You can park for free on streets throughout the neighborhood surrounding Kealing. Both groups will gather behind the school, which backs up to Rosewood Avenue between Salina and Angelina Streets. GROUP 1 LEAVE EARLY TO JOIN THE TEXAS PTA CAUCUS 7:30-8:30 Meet on the Kealing grounds behind the school building for coffee, information and sign-making. 8:30-9:00 Walk together from Kealing to the Capitol. 9:00-11:00 Join the Texas PTA Caucus to learn about issues that could affect Texas schools, and to find out how we can make a difference. After the caucus, walk to South Steps of Capitol together for the Texas PTA Rally. GROUP 2 SKIP THE CAUCUS & JOIN THE RALLY ON THE CAPITOL STEPS 10:00-10:45 Meet on the Kealing grounds behind the school building for information and sign-making. 10:45-11:15 Walk together from Kealing to the Capitol. 11:30-12:00 Rally on the South Steps of the Capitol. Rally Day draws people from across the state to show the Legislature how much support there is for public schools in Texas. The Legislature’s decisions have a major impact on school funding, high-stakes testing and more. The Texas PTA’s legislative priorities focus on strengthening public schools, ensuring meaningful assessment and accountability, supporting student success and increasing health and safety. Events include a caucus where you can gather information, a rally on the Capitol steps and a chance to visit legislators and their staff in the afternoon from 1:00-5:00. Shadow Wranglers Needed Shadowing starts next week and we still need a few more volunteers. Please consider helping out if you can. Slots are about 45 minutes long and your help is greatly needed. Thank you to those who have already signed up. In case you haven't, here's the information again.. From 1/30/17 - 2/28/17 prospective Kealing students will shadow current students to learn about the magnet program. Parents are needed in the mornings from 6:55 - 7:45 and afternoons from 2:15 - 3:00 to help greet, check in and check out shadowing students. You can sign up once or several times to do this quick and easy, but important job.

Attention Future McCallum Volleyball Players!
On Wednesday March 1st McCallum will be having a volleyball booster club meeting 6pm in the Library. This meeting will give the girls information about the summer camp as well as tryout information. If you are planning on attending McCallum High School please plan to attend.

McCallum Blue Brigade Tryouts
For any 8th graders that will be attending McCallum High School: McCALLUM BLUE BRIGADE TRYOUTS for the 2017-2018 school year! The Blue Brigade is the dance team that represents McCallum as a Spirit organization. We perform at pep rallies, football games, selected basketball and volleyball games, contests and Spring Show. Blue Brigade requires both a time and a financial commitment. We meet at 7:15am every morning for practice as well as 1st period. The financial obligation is different for each member and will be discussed at the Information meeting listed below. If you are interested in trying out for the award winning McCallum Blue Brigade you must attend one of the following meetings with a parent to pick up the information!
