Dressing out in PE
Parents, next week 8/27-8/31, will be our first week to dress out in PE.  Students receive a daily grade for dressing out.  Our Kealing PE uniform consists of a gray KMS PE shirt that needs to be purchased for $7, any athletic shorts or sweat pants (in dress code), and athletic shoes.  KMS Physical Education shirts can be purchased with cash or check during the student's PE period or online
Thank you for your help with this matter.  We are looking forward to a successful year in PE!

Community Supplies
Wondering when and where to send community supply donations?  Feel free to drop off items (listed below) up to Kealing on back to school night, September 4th. We will have collection boxes available. Please note, community supplies are optional.  We are collecting various supplies to supplement teachers' classrooms.  Wanted items: kleenex, glue sticks, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, notebook paper, markers, and colored paper.  Thank you for your support.

Homework Hiatus
Back again this year, based on the recommendation of our staff, we will be instituting a Thursday and Friday Homework Hiatus once per grading cycle to encourage our students to recharge with time that is focused away from school. During the Homework Hiatus, scheduled office hours and after school practices will be held but students will not be given new homework assignments. Instead of completing homework assignments or studying, we are encouraging our students to take some time to relax with friends or family. Our teachers will take an email break too.
Our first homework hiatus is coming this week, 8/30 and 8/31.

Clubs & Organizations:
The KMS website has been updated for the clubs currently available for the 2018-2019 school year. We will continue to update as new clubs become available.

Kealing Cross Country
Kealing's Cross Country Club is back for a second year and we want you to join! It is available for grades 6-8 (6th graders run as part of the Run Club). Our goal for the club is to give our Kealing students the opportunity to improve their fitness, set personal goals and achieve them, compete with their friends for Kealing Middle School, and learn to love the sport of running.

Middle school cross country races are 2 miles. We will train/compete 2-3 times a week. The time commitment is not much and will not prevent kids from playing another sport or joining another club. Practices are held Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3-4:15 with an occasional optional Sunday morning run. Meets will be held on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings and are not mandatory.

For more information, please see the Kealing Cross Country Club website

Email the Club Coach, Matt Kleiman or Email or See the Club Sponsor, Shannon Jones (teacher): Room 214

Quiz Bowl Meeting
There will be an informational meeting for students interested in participating in the competitive, academic based club, Quiz Bowl, on Wednesday, September 5 from 3pm-4pm in Ms. Neill's room (room 500). Quiz Bowl is open to all grade levels, and there will be opportunities to participate in both the fall and the spring. If you have any questions, please e-mail Ms. Neill.

Reflection Judging Volunteers
Local artists and art lovers are needed this fall to serve as judges for a K-12 student arts contest called Reflections, sponsored by the Austin Council of PTAs. We ask for one hour of your time at Kealing (please email and at the district level. Reflections recognizes and celebrates thousands of student artists across six disciplines. Today’s art-loving students are tomorrow’s artists, and we want them to know that art is an essential part of what makes Austin the city that we love! You can register here to help at the district level.

Back the Future
Back the Future is an event that is being hosted September 22 by the Austin Council of PTAs. It’s a free, fun event that is in part a resource fair, in part a day of free activities for families, and in part a chance to connect parents and PTA leaders with some of the great organizations working with students, schools and families in our area.
The Austin Council of PTAs is a district-wide PTA that supports 114 PTAs that serve about 80,000 AISD students. Each of those PTAs and schools is looking for new programs to educate families and new opportunities for their campuses. The big goal of this event is to make introductions and new connections between parent leaders, families and Austin organizations.
Back the Future will be held from 10-1 at the AISD Performing Arts Center. We are inviting all AISD students and their families. We will also publicize it to the general public, and we will invite families from neighboring districts, private schools and charter schools. From 9:30-10, there will be a chance for PTA officers to come into the event early, so they can start meeting groups who are there and start making plans for the year.
Currently ACPTA, is looking for these organizations.  Organizations can also learn more and register at The cost for not for profits is deeply discounted – there’s even a free option for the smallest not for profits. If you are able to join us, you will meet lots of families and leaders of campus communities, and you will also be added to our online resource directory.
