Hornet Herald-April 9, 2018

posted Apr 1, 2018, 6:27 AM by Kenisha Coburn   [ updated Apr 23, 2018, 12:11 PM ]
Good afternoon Hornet Families,

We had a busy weekend! We made it through a school dance during which I was fortunate to see a 10 minute dance-off between our students. Ms. Pena Brooks even got in on the action. We welcomed some of our new Magnet students for choice sheets and math placement testing. The icing on the cake was enjoying a night of music and fun at Kealing Center Stage. The Spiral Notebooks put on quite a show and we are thankful for all of you who came out to support our PTA's largest fundraiser of the year! Thank you to Sara Bircher and the rest of the KCS team for planning this event.

This week brings STAAR testing for our 7th and 8th grade students. They have stretched their brains so far year and this is an opportunity for us to get feedback on their progress. Please encourage your child to get enough rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive on time to school so that they are prepared to give their best effort. Our 6th grade students will not be testing this week but will be engaged in a number of activities, including a few field trips. We could still use some extra hands so please read below if you are interested in chaperoning this Tuesday or Wednesday. We also have the Monarch Fest this Saturday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm so I am hoping the weather works in our favor.

I hope you all have read about recapture and it's impact on Austin ISD schools. Over the past few years, we have made adjustments to account for budgetary obstacles with minimal affect on course offerings and instruction. This year Guitar, Orchestra, Chinese, Office Staff, English as a Second Language, and new student transition camp are just a few of the areas that will be impacted. Our Special Education team is currently a bit smaller too based on student projections but we know that we will be able to continue to provide a high quality of education in spite of these challenges. This Thursday, I encourage you to join us for the Kealing Campus Advisory Council Meeting at 4:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for you to review the campus budget and staffing, ask questions, and provide feedback. Your understanding and partnership will be even more critical as we move forward so I hope to see you there.

Also, mark your calendars for April 19 and April 20. As you may know, April 20 is the National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools. Some of our students have asked to have an opportunity to have their opinions acknowledged and their questions answered and we know that civic participation is an important component of education. Through a Day of Action on April 20, students will participate in town hall meetings and visit with representatives from many non-profit organizations with difference focuses. There will be a variety of activities to help students express their opinions or be engaged with any issue(s) they choose. To facilitate this April 20 event, we will operate a C-Day schedule on April 19.

As you can see, we are looking forward to a busy few weeks before we start to wind down!

Warm regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Monarch Fest
Mark your calendars for Kealing's first ever Monarch Fest on Saturday April 14th from 9 am -12 pm! Did you know monarchs are in danger of becoming extinct?
Kealing is a Monarch Heroes school working to create a habitat for these beautiful migrating creatures and to educate the community about what we can all do to help the monarchs.

The whole family is invited to Monarch Fest where we'll do a monarch scavenger hunt, plant a butterfly-friendly garden, make "insect hotels" and more. The first 20 winners of the scavenger hunt will receive FREE milkweed and nectar plant seeds to start their own butterfly garden! This event is open to the whole community, so please help us spread the word. Students who participate in planting or who help prep for Monarch Fest can earn service hours.

Hope to see you in the Kealing garden on the 14th!

Considering Off Campus PE for 2018-19?
Here is what you need to know!
Students who will be in the 7th or 8th grade for the 2018-19 school year can apply for an off campus physical education waiver. A waiver means the student is participating in 5 or more hours of physical activity with one of AISD approved agencies. Students with waivers do not take PE during the school day, instead they take a different elective when they would have PE scheduled. The deadline to submit an application for the waiver for the fall semester is May 18th and November 15th for Spring 2019. Please visit the following website for additional information.
Upcoming PTA Meetings

Kealing's garden needs your cardboard!
Kealing's school garden could use any extra cardboard you might have lying around. Please leave the cardboard outside the garden shed door whenever it is convenient for you to drop it off. The garden is located off of Pennsylvania Avenue, near the tennis courts. We will use the cardboard  to block weeds from growing in the new garden beds we'll be creating this spring. Contact Kate Martin with any questions. Thank you!

KMAG Meeting
Our next KMAG meeting is next Thursday April 12th at 7:30am in the library. Please join us to learn more about math at Kealing. Ms. Carter and/or Ms. Coburn will be talking about the different options and how math placement works. We are also in need of two volunteers for next year's KMAG Board: a co-president and a secretary. It's a great way to get involved and to get to know the school. Co-presidents help to lead the meetings and the secretary takes the meeting minutes. We have meetings twice a month in the fall and once a month in the spring, so it really isn't a huge time commitment. Please let us know if you're interested (
