Hornet Herald - October 14, 2018

posted Oct 15, 2018, 4:21 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Oct 15, 2018, 4:29 AM ]

Hello Hornet Families,

Last week was a busy one. While continuing the quality learning that takes place daily, our students kicked off their first Fine Arts concert season. Then we ended the week with pep rallies to lead us into Homecoming Week. We're looking forward to an exciting celebration of Hornet Pride. Our Volleyball team will be finishing their season Monday night at Kealing. Our football team will be taking on Covington Middle School at Burger Stadium Wednesday with the Kealing Pep Band backing them in the stands for the first time this season. Last year we had a rainy Homecoming Game but the forecast looks promising. My fingers are crossed!

There are a few important updates that will impact us in the coming weeks.

School Nurse
Nurse Gini Hand will no longer be on staff at Kealing and the team is working diligently to find a replacement. We will have substitutes on campus until the full-time position is filled so please operate as you normally would. If you have the need to send an email to the nurse, please send it directly to the grade-level counselor and they will help route it appropriately.

Checking Students Out
If you are coming on campus to check out your student, please plan for a 10-minute wait. Our team tries to move as quickly as possible, but getting to classrooms or other locations and retrieving students can take a while. End of day checkout will end at 2:30 pm so anyone arriving at the window to check a student out after 2:30 pm will need to wait until students are released for the day. Thanks for your patience and help with this as we work to end each day smoothly.

Austin ISD Budget
As our district works to continue to serve our communities while weathering the $600 million impact of recapture, difficult budget decisions are being made. There are a number of proposals this year that will impact all campuses and some that will particularly impact campuses that have Magnet Programs. We'll be discussing these potential changes briefly this week at the KMAG meeting along with how they might impact our programming. Join us if you can!

That's all for this week. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming games and concerts supporting our talented Hornets.

Kind Regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Magnet AISD School Board Candidate Forum
Currently, AISD is facing is a $30 million dollar deficit and is looking for places to cut.  The Budget Stabilization Task Force is currently considering cuts to the magnet budgets, specifically magnet transportation and the magnet staffing allocation.  On Monday night, the school board was presented with the option of reducing staffing for magnet education among various budget reduction possibilities.  Currently, magnet schools are the only schools being identified by name in the proposed budget cuts.

Next Sunday, October 21st at 4pm, we will be hosting a Magnet AISD School Board Candidate Forum.  Candidates for both the at-large position and District 4 will be present.  It is extremely important that we have a large number of magnet parents attend this event.  As a community, we need to become educated on where the candidates stand in regards to magnet education.  It is also important for these candidates to see that magnet education is very important to our community.

This is your opportunity to learn where the candidates stand on issues related to the magnet community, and our opportunity to educate the candidates about the magnet programs within AISD.

Hosted by PFLASA, KMAG, Fulmore PTA and LASA Student Council
The forum is non-partisan event, free and open to the public.

PTA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Back the Future
Saturday, September 22nd, 10am-1pm
A free, fun event hosted by the Austin Council of PTAs. It’s in part a resource fair, in part a day of free activities for families, and in part a chance to connect parents and PTA leaders with some of the great organizations working with students, schools and families in our area. For more information, click here. (Location: AISD Performing Arts Center)

Reflections
Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for 50 years. Through the efforts of our Local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts.
With positive recognition as the focus of this program, rather than competition, students of all ages and abilities can experience the benefits of creative expression and help in finding their own voice in telling their unique story.
This year’s theme is “Heros Around Me” and the deadline will be the end of October.
See www.kealingpta.org for the guidelines and rules.
Express your artistic talent and tell us what's within reach through Reflections!

Warning Phishing Scam - Do Not Fall for this
In the past view months, emails for PTA Board members on various campuses around AISD have been asking Parents in a direct email to go out and buy gift cards and then to take the picture of the codes on the back and email them back. KMAG and PTA are never going to ask you for the codes. During the teacher appreciation holiday party in December, we may ask for physical gift cards to donate.  We will never describe a big need scenario and then ask you gift card codes! Be on the lookout!

PTA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Reflection Judging Volunteers
Local artists and art lovers are needed this fall to serve as judges for a K-12 student arts contest called Reflections, sponsored by the Austin Council of PTAs. We ask for one hour of your time at Kealing (please email reflections@kealingpta.org) and at the district level. Reflections recognizes and celebrates thousands of student artists across six disciplines. Today’s art-loving students are tomorrow’s artists, and we want them to know that art is an essential part of what makes Austin the city that we love! You can register here to help at the district level.

Back the Future
Back the Future is an event that is being hosted September 22 by the Austin Council of PTAs. It’s a free, fun event that is in part a resource fair, in part a day of free activities for families, and in part a chance to connect parents and PTA leaders with some of the great organizations working with students, schools and families in our area.

The Austin Council of PTAs is a district-wide PTA that supports 114 PTAs that serve about 80,000 AISD students. Each of those PTAs and schools is looking for new programs to educate families and new opportunities for their campuses. The big goal of this event is to make introductions and new connections between parent leaders, families and Austin organizations.

Back the Future will be held from 10-1 at the AISD Performing Arts Center. We are inviting all AISD students and their families. We will also publicize it to the general public, and we will invite families from neighboring districts, private schools and charter schools. From 9:30-10, there will be a chance for PTA officers to come into the event early, so they can start meeting groups who are there and start making plans for the year.

Currently ACPTA, is looking for these organizations.  Organizations can also learn more and register at austincouncilpta.org The cost for not for profits is deeply discounted – there’s even a free option for the smallest not for profits. If you are able to join us, you will meet lots of families and leaders of campus communities, and you will also be added to our online resource directory.

PS. I feel so strongly about this I have purchased membership for every person in my house, except the puppy :)

Rally Day Monday Feb 25

Hornet Herald - August 19, 2018

posted Aug 19, 2018, 4:12 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Kealing Families,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! Our highly skilled and devoted staff worked hard last week to plan and prepare for our students. The office staff has been registering new families, ordering materials, updating files, and supporting teachers. Thanks to our custodians, the campus sparkles and shines. The counselors invested significant time and effort in building schedules for the 1260+ students who will be walking our halls. The effort and joy from our teachers in learning together, planning together, and creating welcoming classrooms has been remarkable. I know that this year will be one for the books as we strengthen our environment of high expectations, safety, and inclusivity.

Student Handbook

There have been a few updates to the Kealing Parent and Student Handbook so please take some time to review this with your child. It can be found here on the Kealing Website.

Staff Directory

This week, all teachers will nail down their office hours for the year. This information will be posted on the Kealing Website through a staff directory update this week. Be on the lookout for this starting on Monday, August 27.

Elective Changes

I am sure some of your families are already having conversation about the opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to be teaching assistants as well as the possibilities that come with the elective change process. Here are the elective change guidelines:

·         Eligible courses are those that were not in the top 10 on a student’s choice sheet.

·         Elective availability will be posted in the building and online Wednesday.

·         Students may request a lateral move. For example, an elective scheduled during B6 may only be traded for another scheduled during B6.

·         A parent or guardian signature is required on the change form.

To help our students and teachers settle in to their schedules, we will make the teaching assistant forms available Monday, August 20 and elective change forms available Wednesday, August 22. They must be returned by the end of the day Friday, August 24 to be considered.

Safety Procedures

We will continue to conduct safety drills this year and this week we will begin to train our students so they know what to expect in case of an emergency. I encourage you to discuss these procedures with your children at home to help reiterate the importance of these protocols.

Also, there has been a district-wide update to the system that we use to check guests on campus. Please bring your identification for your first visit to campus this year, even if you have been in the past. Plan for extra time for the first PTA and KMAG meetings as well since there will be new procedures in place.

Thank you to all of you for your help in preparing your students for the new school year. We value your commitment to ensuring that Kealing remains a great place for all students to learn. I look forward to greeting students and families again tomorrow. It is a privilege to serve as your principal. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all Kealing Hornets.

Warm Regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Principal

Kealing Middle School

Hornet Herald - June 25, 2018

posted Jun 25, 2018, 6:17 AM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

I hope you are enjoying the summer, relaxing, and spending time with friends and family. The break has been kind to me so far (tennis, swimming, and Amy’s ice cream mostly) but I am also working to get ready for the fall! Below is some important information to have in your mind this summer when you begin to think about the 2018-2019 school year. By the way, if you are now a former-Hornet parent, email kms-hornet-herald+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com to unsubscribe and be removed from the mailing list.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

We know that many of you will be purchasing school supplies this summer so click here for a list that will help you get a head start. These lists are not comprehensive due to the variety of unique course offerings at Kealing so a small number of additional supplies may be requested once students have visited all of their classes.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS

English/Language Arts

All Kealing students should be preparing for summer reading if they have not already gotten a head start. These activities are critical for battling the summer slide and helping students start off the year ready to learn.

Our teachers are excited to take this time to have fun with students while working on summer reading. All participating students will be able to take home their summer reading text of choice. Email Christopher.hague@austinisd.org or contact the Program Office at 512-414-2707 if your student is interested in participating.

Math

6th and 7th grade students who will be taking Algebra I and any students who will be taking Geometry or Algebra II should have completed their summer math assignments before the first day of school. Click here to look at the summer assignment site for these students.

NEW HORNET TRANSITION CAMP

We look forward to seeing all of our new students at Hornet Camp on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. Students will receive a tour of the school, meet some of the Kealing teachers, and participate in activities that will help them have a smooth transition to Kealing Middle School. No sign up is required and we hope to see all of our new students at camp!

Students who are eligible for transportation to school during the school year will be able to ride the bus to Hornet Camp. Routes will be similar but will run 1 hour later than the usual time. Bus schedules will be posted on the district website.

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION

New Parent Orientation Presentations are an opportunity to get an overview of the schedule, programming specifics, and some practices and protocols that are unique to Kealing. It’s also a great chance for parents to ask questions that will help them be comfortable and prepared for the first day of school. Below are the available time slots and we hope to see all new parents during one of the presentations.
