Hornet Herald - April 15, 2018

posted Apr 15, 2018, 7:39 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Apr 16, 2018, 2:23 PM ]

April 20th is Kealing Day of Action

Through Kealing Day of Action, students will be able to participate in town hall meetings, have an opportunity to visit with representatives from many organizations with different focuses, and participate in five activities developed by student leaders that allow Kealing students to address the issues that matter to them. This day is an exercise in civic education through which our students’ voices will be encouraged and valued.

Before Friday, Kealing students will learn about Action Civics through Advisory lessons prepared in the Generation Citizen course. They will also have an opportunity to write questions about the topics they choose to pose to our town hall panelists. The town hall will include a variety of guests like members of the Texas Legislature, the Austin ISD School Board, the Austin Police Department, the League of Women Voters, and the Austin Chapter of the NAACP.
The Central Texas Food Bank, Think Bilingual Austin, Safe Austin, The Kindness Campaign, The Golden Hornet, and Lemonade Day are just a few of the community organizations who will be present to tell students about their work during the gallery walk. The format will allow students to visit the tables that they choose. In preparation for students’ questions related to the April 20 National Student Walkout for gun safety, we hope to also include organizations with various viewpoints who focus on gun safety. Texas Gun Sense and Moms Demand Action are confirmed and we await confirmation from a few others.

Please feel free to follow along with the Advisory plans for the week so that you can discuss Action Civics at home. Later this week, Friday’s activities will be posted on this Advisory page too, along with the complete list of Town Hall panelists and organizations with booths.

We will operate a C Schedule on Thursday, April 19 so students will attend all classes for a shorter period of time.  Please help your student plan accordingly.

Good afternoon Hornet Families,

We had a busy weekend! We made it through a school dance during which I was fortunate to see a 10 minute dance-off between our students. Ms. Pena Brooks even got in on the action. We welcomed some of our new Magnet students for choice sheets and math placement testing. The icing on the cake was enjoying a night of music and fun at Kealing Center Stage. The Spiral Notebooks put on quite a show and we are thankful for all of you who came out to support our PTA's largest fundraiser of the year! Thank you to Sara Bircher and the rest of the KCS team for planning this event.

This week brings STAAR testing for our 7th and 8th grade students. They have stretched their brains so far year and this is an opportunity for us to get feedback on their progress. Please encourage your child to get enough rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive on time to school so that they are prepared to give their best effort. Our 6th grade students will not be testing this week but will be engaged in a number of activities, including a few field trips. We could still use some extra hands so please read below if you are interested in chaperoning this Tuesday or Wednesday. We also have the Monarch Fest this Saturday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm so I am hoping the weather works in our favor.

I hope you all have read about recapture and it's impact on Austin ISD schools. Over the past few years, we have made adjustments to account for budgetary obstacles with minimal affect on course offerings and instruction. This year Guitar, Orchestra, Chinese, Special Education, Office Staff, English as a Second Language, and new student transition camp are just a few of the areas that will be impacted but we know that we will be able to continue to provide a high quality of education in spite of these challenges. This Thursday, I encourage you to join us for the Kealing Campus Advisory Council Meeting at 4:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for you to review the campus budget and staffing, ask questions, and provide feedback. Your understanding and partnership will be even more critical as we move forward so I hope to see you there.

Also, mark your calendars for April 19 and April 20. As you may know, April 20 is the National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools. Some of our students have asked to have an opportunity to have their opinions acknowledged and their questions answered and we know that civic participation is an important component of education. Through a Day of Action on April 20, students will participate in town hall meetings and visit with representatives from many non-profit organizations with difference focuses. There will be a variety of activities to help students express their opinions or be engaged with any issue(s) they choose. To facilitate this April 20 event, we will operate a C-Day schedule on April 19.

As you can see, we are looking forward to a busy few weeks before we start to wind down!

Warm regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Considering Off Campus PE for 2018-19?
Here is what you need to know!
Students who will be in the 7th or 8th grade for the 2018-19 school year can apply for an off campus physical education waiver. A waiver means the student is participating in 5 or more hours of physical activity with one of AISD approved agencies. Students with waivers do not take PE during the school day, instead they take a different elective when they would have PE scheduled. The deadline to submit an application for the waiver for the fall semester is May 18th and November 15th for Spring 2019. Please visit the following website for additional information.

Kealing's garden needs your cardboard!
Kealing's school garden could use any extra cardboard you might have lying around. Please leave the cardboard outside the garden shed door whenever it is convenient for you to drop it off. The garden is located off of Pennsylvania Avenue, near the tennis courts. We will use the cardboard  to block weeds from growing in the new garden beds we'll be creating this spring. Contact Kate Martin with any questions. Thank you!

KMAG ANNOUNCEMENTS
KMAG Meeting
Our next KMAG meeting is next Thursday April 12th at 7:30am in the library. Please join us to learn more about math at Kealing. Ms. Carter and/or Ms. Coburn will be talking about the different options and how math placement works. We are also in need of two volunteers for next year's KMAG Board: a co-president and a secretary. It's a great way to get involved and to get to know the school. Co-presidents help to lead the meetings and the secretary takes the meeting minutes. We have meetings twice a month in the fall and once a month in the spring, so it really isn't a huge time commitment. Please let us know if you're interested (mand94@gmail.com).

Handbags For Hope
In conjunction with the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Advocacy Project, Kealing will be participating in the 11th Annual Handbags For Hope campaign drive. Please donate your gently used (or new) purses which will be delivered to women shelters across the State of Texas. The Texas Advocacy Project has distributed more than 39,000 bags through Handbags for Hope to women in need since it first launched 11 years ago. Working with the children's programming coordinators at the shelters, they will offer them to the children who will select a handbag to give to their mother on Mother's Day. Women in the shelter who don't have children, will be able to choose a handbag for themselves. Inside each handbag, these women will find hotline numbers for the Texas Advocacy Project allowing them to access their completely free legal services. The campaign will run from February 21, 2018 - April 2, 2018. Let's show the Travis County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Advocacy Project that the Kealing Hornets supports this drive by collecting as many purses as possible to donate.

Hornet Herald - March 4, 2018

posted Mar 4, 2018, 5:08 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Mar 4, 2018, 5:08 PM ]

Good afternoon Hornet Families,

Last week was an exciting week marked by long nights and successful outings by many of our students. The girls' soccer team fought hard and placed second in the zone. The final game at House Park was a nail biter and Ms. Jaworski is proud of a strong season. We also ended the boys' basketball season this week with a 1st place finish for the 7th grade boys and a 3rd place finish for the 8th grade boys. Our Orchestra students participated in UIL competition this week and all three groups brought home all 1's. It was a great showing and they smiled with their chests held high when they returned to campus.

This week we'll having a week of learning as we try to keep the Spring Break energy contained. We also have a busy CAC Meeting Agenda since we will be looking at the budget and staffing for the 2018-2019 school year along with our plans for District of Innovation professional development days. The district's budgetary realities due impact campuses and may change the way we do some things, so these conversations and the resulting decisions are important for our students and staff. If you are around and want to stop by to learn more, we'll be meeting in the library Thursday at 4:00 pm.

Mark your calendar for Kealing Center Stage, our PTA's primary fundraiser of the year. The PTA supports instructional materials, professional development, new technology, field trips, and many other things that help improve the learning experience for our students. We'll be meeting at the Thinkery on April 7 for a fun evening with members of the Kealing community in support of our PTA and our students. Tickets will be on sale after the break and I hope to see you there!

We will be closing the building this Friday at 3:00 pm to allow our staff to get their much-needed Spring Break started. There will be no after school events so please make sure you have made arrangements.

Have a great week!

Hornet Herald - February 25, 2018

posted Feb 25, 2018, 8:09 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Feb 25, 2018, 8:09 AM ]

Good morning Kealing Community,

The last few weeks have been emotionally taxing as we have all grappled with the recent events in Florida. On Friday, February 23, some of our students exercised their First Amendment rights to stand up to gun violence. While our primary goals are to keep our students safe, on campus, and engaged in learning, I applaud our Hornets for wanting to actively participate in our democracy and appreciate their desire for their voices to be heard.

Civic engagement is an important part of education at Kealing and I commend the students who participated. In their activism, they represented themselves, their families, and Kealing Middle School well. The majority of the students circled the Kealing campus and a small group ventured to the capital. We have a campus plan to keep our students safe in case of a walkout so all of our students were accounted for and accompanied by Kealing staff while they protested.

There are some laws and policies we want to communicate, so all are informed of what are student’s rights when strong opinions turn into protected speech and protected conduct under the First Amendment.
  • Students at schools maintain constitutional rights, which include the right to peacefully assemble and a right to free speech, while they are in school. Schools may, however, take reasonable action to maintain a safe and functioning learning environment.
  • While protesting, student’s behavior must be aligned with the guidelines set within the Austin ISD Student Code of Conduct. The Student Code of Conduct may be accessed on the AISD website: https://www.austinisd.org/parent-information/conduct-code
I encourage you use this document as a guide and talk with your children about first amendment rights for student protesters. Encourage them to communicate with teachers, counselors, and administrators so that we can support them in their efforts.

We regularly operate safety drills and are confident that our students and staff know how to act in case of crisis. We will continue to revisit these procedures and answer our students’ questions while attempting to move forward in a manner that allows them to feel calm and safe at school. I will be available to answer any questions you might have about safety procedures at the Principal’s Coffee this Thursday and I hope to see you there. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions that I can answer.

With warm regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Name:Rhiannon Chambers
What college did you attend?University of Texas at Austin
What was your favorite course in college?
My favorite course in college was the geology of gems and minerals. We got to make our own cabochons and facet our own gemstones!
I teach because............I teach because it's fun! Each day is different, and I genuinely enjoy every moment of it. I'm honored to teach the content I really care about to all of my amazing students. Seriously, each and every one of them are awesome, and they surprise me every day in the best ways!
How many years have you been at Kealing? This year is my first full-time year at Kealing. However, I was a student teacher here last year with Mrs. Tasneem!
What courses do you teach at Kealing?I teach 7th grade life science, geology, and Science Olympiads.
What do you do for fun outside of work?Outside of work, I love hiking, camping, and exploring the hill country with my friends and their doggos. I also like to garden, and take care of all my plants and animals. I still make cabochons, and wire wrap them for jewelry. My friends and I also hit up the Blue Hanger and other thrift stores for amazing (and sometimes ridiculous) finds.
Tell us about the most challenging thing you've ever done.During my last two years of college, I was taking classes full time (15 hrs/week), working at my internship at Crockett HS (15 hrs/week), working as a makeup artist (20 hrs/week), and dog sitting (10ish hrs/week). Every day of the week was a 12-16 hour work day before I was home again, and that doesn't even include time to study or do homework for my classes! That being said, I learned how to manage my time better than ever before, and how to find purpose in every moment of my day. I could sit around and think about all the things I had to do, or I could just do them. Never skip the hustle!

Attention: Parents of Students Receiving Special Education Services

During the 2016-2017 school year, the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) performed a series of onsite monitoring visits to review Texas’ compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The final report was provided to TEA on January 10, 2018.

The findings from that report require TEA to develop a plan to address four corrective actions. An integral part of the plan development process will be the gathering of input from stakeholders and other interested Texans.

ESC Region 13 is assisting TEA in providing notice to interested parents of meeting opportunity(s) and registration directions. Each one hour meeting will be structured to solicit targeted feedback from participants regarding TEA’s initial draft plan. These meetings are closed to media and the general public to protect the privacy of students and families.

Interested participants may only register/attend one identified focus group session. Click here for more information.

HORNET HIGHLIGHT

Name:David Hinojosa
What college did you attend?University of Texas at Austin
What was your favorite course in college?Instrumental Conducting. I had an amazing professor who challenged us to look beyond the music and decide what a piece of music really meant to us.
I teach because............I had an amazing band director (Mr. B) who pushed us to be the best we could be and realize our potential. His ability to draw the best out of his students through the power of music pushed me to want to do that with students of my own.
How many years have you been at Kealing?6 years
What courses do you teach at Kealing?Wind Ensemble, Beginning Trombone, Tuba, and Euphonium, Jazz Ensemble
What do you do for fun outside of work?I play bass guitar in my rock band Legendary Skies. I also find time to play tuba in some of Austin's community bands. When I am not music making, I like to go on runs, do some weightlifting, and play basketball.
Tell us about the most challenging thing you've ever done.Stepping up to inherit the Kealing Band program. This band program has known years of success and has a long history of excellence and amazingly high standards. Being the Director of Bands and leading a team of amazing teachers to continue this success has had its challenges but its been totally worth it. When you love what you do, work hardly feels like work.
