Hornet Herald: October 6, 2019

posted Oct 6, 2019, 4:23 PM by KMS Hornets

Hey Hornets,

Last week was thrilling. From pep rallies to dress up days, we enjoyed seeing the Kealing spirit from both students and staff.

Homecoming football games were a success with the 7th and 8th grade teams winning handily over Lively Middle School. The special treat for all supporters was seeing the Kealing Pep Band in the stands. Our band has been sidelined due to rainy days the last few years but the weather was kind to us this year.  Check them out below if you didn't get to see the live action.

Our volleyball teams stood proud at Kealing and Lively. There were some tough three set matches and a combo of wins and losses. The teamwork and fighting spirit that defines Kealing Athletics was on display. We’re always proud of our students but Homecoming Week has a special feel. Thanks to all who came out to support!

Our staff will be participating in professional development on Friday, October 11 and Monday, October 14. All Austin ISD students are out on October 14. Kealing has a special professional development day on October 11. If you have students on other Austin ISD campuses, click here to check for their additional professional development days.

Wishing you all a great week!

Hey Hornets,

It's Homecoming Week and we're looking forward to seeing the Kealing Pride all over campus. Our football teams take on Lively Monday night at House Park and our volleyball teams take Lively on Tuesday, with 8th grade playing at home. We will kick off the week with pep rallies to celebrate our Athletes and give all of our students an opportunity to show their spirit. To make this work, we will operate a Pep Rally Schedule Monday and Tuesday. The schedule is all flipped around but don't worry, we'll make announcements at each transition to help students head in the right direction.

I hope to see you cheering on our Hornets Monday and Tuesday this week!

Hornet Herald - September 22, 2019

posted Sep 23, 2019, 4:06 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Sep 23, 2019, 4:10 AM ]

Hi Hornets,

As many of you are aware, students around the globe participated in protests Friday aiming to get world leaders to take action on climate change. As one of the closest secondary campuses to the Texas State Capitol, our students are a stone’s throw from a critical place in our democracy. During events like this one, our primary goals are to keep students safe, on campus, and engaged in learning. Be sure that your students know your expectations in case of protest, walkout, or rally at the Capitol. While we have systems in place to notify parents and may follow students when staff is available, these are not school sanctioned or sponsored events.

I know that democracy is not a spectator sport and applaud students for wanting to actively participate. Talk with your students about other ways they can support change in the areas that matter to them. It takes time and commitment. They’re not too young to help!

Chevron Fuel Your School Program Is Coming to Austin ISD!
This October, Chevron’s Fuel Your School program will donate $1 for every fuel purchase of at least 8 gallons at participating Chevron and Texaco stations in Austin. Up to $375,000 will be donated directly to the Donors Choose crowdfunding platform to fund AISD teacher projects. Over the next few weeks I’ll let you know which Kealing projects are popping up on Donors Choose.
How can you help? Choose carefully when you fuel up! Austin area parents, families, and community members may purchase at least 8 gallons of fuel at Chevron and Texaco-branded stations in Austin from October 1-31. Chevron will donate $1 of each purchase to Donors Choose, which will then help fund teacher projects. In addition, everyone is invited to donate directly to projects on Donors Choose during this period.

KMAG No Hassle Fundraiser – Home Stretch!
The KMAG No Hassle Fundraiser is winding down and we need your help in meeting this year’s goals! So far the fundraiser has brought in over $51,000 that will support classroom materials, professional learning for teachers, and extra-curricular activities. Every dollar counts so give if you can. Also, remember to see if your company will pitch in since a number of Austin companies offer matching funds when families give to schools. This is another way for you to help us meet our goals.

That’s all for this week!

Hey Hornets!

Some educators and healthcare professionals will tell you with absolute certainty that strange things happen during full moons. This past Friday was the 13th and a full moon so if you are superstitious, you should have been worried for us all! I am pleased to report that there was no howling and no other oddities to report (well not anymore than is typical for middle schoolers). It was another week of learning and positive energy in our classrooms. We reminded students about Homework Hiatus and I hope you all took advantage of the time this weekend. I definitely enjoyed the under 100 degree temperatures!

Last week we started our Active Day rotations so your students will be able to get some energy out once a week in a variety of spaces. The park and fields are a hit so if you have extra soccer balls, footballs, or frisbees that you would like to donate, please send them to the Program Office. Our students will put them to good use during the active time. Hydration is key so encourage your students to bring water bottles to school each day.

That's all for this week!

Hornet Herald - September 8, 2019

posted Sep 8, 2019, 4:00 PM by KMS Hornets

Hey Hornets!

Thanks to all of you who joined us last week at Back to School Night. We had a great time visiting with families and we hope you all learned a lot about what to expect this year. If you were not able to join us, take a look at the welcome video that was shown during Advisory to kick off the evening.

Homework Hiatus is coming up on September 12-13 so students will not have assignments due and they will not take assessments on September 16-17. I hope you all are planning to enjoy some quality time with family and friends. The Kealing staff will certainly enjoy the shutdown days!

Our football team takes on Gus Garcia at Nelson Field Tuesday and we are expecting a fun one. We have new A/C blowers in the small gym so I also encourage you to stop by for a very comfortable volleyball game against Murchison Thursday.

I am looking forward to a stellar week!

Back to School Night
Tuesday, September 3, 2019, 6-8pm

We will promptly begin at 6:05 in your child’s Advisory class.

Parents will be allowed to enter at 5:30 pm and not before as to give Teachers/staff time to prepare for your visit. Also, remember not to park in the bus lane on Pennsylvania Ave. between 4:00- 5:30 pm as the late buses will be arriving.

This is an opportunity for you to put faces with your student's teacher's names. You will walk your student's schedule (wear comfortable shoes!). This time has been set aside for all parents to experience what your student does in the classroom. If you have individual questions for your student's teacher, please email him/her to setup a time to discuss after BTSN.  Typically, this is an adult event. Your students will have had a full day so be mindful of this. Classrooms have limited seating, too!

Helpful tip: Login to the parent cloud, go to the grades tile, then click on the tab that says "Schedule". From the TEAMS Mobile App, click on "Schedule" instead of report card. On the schedule list, you will be able to see the advisory teacher and room number. If you are able, screen shot the schedule for a handy reminder! If not, write down your advisory teacher and room number!

Hornet Herald - August 25, 2019

posted Aug 25, 2019, 7:09 PM by KMS Hornets

Hey Hornets!

We expected a great start last week and that's certainly what we had. The students are getting the hang of the lunch schedule and by Friday most were successfully getting to classes before the tardy bell. We'll still be helping plenty this week but were excited to see the students confidently moving through the building. The adjective I would use to describe the first week is joyful. I visited classrooms filled with excited students who were ready to learn and teachers who were thrilled to be a part of the Kealing Family. This is my fifth year at Kealing and a start has never felt better.

This week it will be full steam ahead with the start of Think Tank. This supervised space will be open to students from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm. Students who attend Think Tank must first participate in a scheduled after school event like office hours or a club. Otherwise, all students should have a plan to be leave the building at dismissal. We are almost done updated office hours on the staff directory so take a look if you are helping your child plan!

The much-anticipated elective change forms will be available to students tomorrow. Please read the form thoroughly to help your student apply only for eligible changes. The form along with the list of available courses by class period will be posted on the Kealing website by 4:30 pm tomorrow so visit www.kealingmiddleschool.org to take a look. Our goal is to complete these final schedule changes by this Friday so that teachers can dive more deeply into the elective courses starting next week.

Those of you who are returning parents may have heard your students speak about changes to cell phone use on campus. This fall all 8th graders will be receiving Chromebooks so we will have more than enough technology to meet the academic needs we have on campus. This has allowed us to make Kealing a cell-free zone and students are not able to use cell phones during the school day for any reason. For the past few years we have permitted cell phone use for academic purposes and found this to be a lot to manage for students and staff. We are excited about the changes! Music will play during lunch and many of our teachers are developing class playlists since many of our students use their devices for this purpose. As always, feel free to call the campus if you need to reach your student during the school day. We will gladly deliver a message!

You student should have started bringing school supplies to class by now and some are wondering what to do with the community supplies (tissue, wipes, sanitizer). These should be dropped off with Advisory teachers anytime in the next few weeks. We will corral them in central locations so that teachers can grab them as needed throughout the year. If your student has other questions about supply lists, encourage them to speak with their teachers.

Mark your calendar for Back to School Night. This is an opportunity to meet your student's teachers and learn about what they will experience this year in each class. Click here to check out the schedule. Part of the fun is getting to class before the bell so we encourage you not to bring your child. It makes the challenge more fun and having a tour guide is a party foul! Maps will be provided and schedules will be available for pick up in Advisory classrooms. We encourage you to bring your student's schedule just in case you arrive late in the program.

Tomorrow we are back at it. Here are a few reminders for the morning commute:
  • We prefer parents to drop off in the back lot on Salina near the Theater and Gym. The parking lot is moving smoothly and it the most safe place for students to jump out of the car.
  • You may drop off on Pennsylvania or Leona. Staff will be there to direct you. The ultimate goal is for students to use sidewalks and crosswalks. Don't drop in the middle lane!
  • Be ready to drop and roll when you arrive. The faster your student exits, the faster the traffic will flow.
That's all for this week. If you weren't here for the PTA meeting last week, I hope to see you soon!

Kind regards,

Kenisha Coburn

3. BONUS: Want Kealing gear?
Now, for those of you that are new to Kealing, YES, we have two parent organizations: PTA and KMAG at Kealing. This is not an either/or situation - you need to know/participate in both. See questions above. They both have meeting dates. They both need volunteers. They WORK WELL TOGETHER to support all of our students and faculty/staff.

Kealing PTA is our parent organization that not only advocates for all Kealing students (including yours and mine), they support our teachers and staff, support our communities, support basically everything that has to do with Kealing and public education. Support your student by joining the PTA. Yes, it is a 501 c3, non-profit organization.

KMAG is our parent organization that supports the magnet program. There is no funding for programs like this in the public school arena so KMAG exists to help basically fund the exceptional education that our magnet program provides. KMAG also helps with all things magnet - shadowing, recruiting, etc. Think of it as a "booster" club. Support your student by donating to our annual no-hassle fundraiser. And yes, it is a 501 c3, non-profit organization. Your donations are tax-deductible. Check to see if your employer matches!

Hornet Herald - August 19, 2019

posted Aug 19, 2019, 6:55 PM by KMS Hornets

Hornet Family,

Twas the night before school started when all through the school the teachers were shouting, "This sure does look cool!" The offices shine and the stairs have new tread, the Counselor's built a center and the nurse has a new bed. Our staff came back and I watched passion flow. I hope your students too are ready to go!

Surprise! In addition to song lyrics and movie quotes, I entertain myself with cheesy, joyful poetry. The last week with faculty has been filled with little pieces of joy as we have prepared to have our Hornets back for the 2019-2020 school year. We are ready and this skilled teaching staff is looking forward to greeting students tomorrow morning.

First day room assignments are live and online. On the first day of school, Tuesday, August 20, 2019, students will report to check-in rooms to receive their final schedules and campus maps. 7th and 8th grade students will find their rooms with the help of staff members. 6th grade students will be picked up by teachers and escorted to their rooms. The first day is a "pack light" day so a pencil and paper should suffice. Teachers will let students know when to start bringing other school supplies

We will be operating two lanes on Pennsylvania with additional staff support to try to get the traffic flowing well. Be ready for the morning drop-off tomorrow so that you can say goodbye to your Hornet with a smile!

Kind regards,
Kenisha Coburn

2019 Kealing Hornet Football
We are looking forward to another great season of Hornet Football starting in August! We have  some information that will help get the season started well.

August 20th- The first day of school and the first day of practice. We need all players to have a completed AISD physical packet, including the online parent and student signatures. All information can be found in the Physical Packet which can be picked up in the school front office or accessed online at  https://www.austinisd.org/athletics/forms

All players will need to provide their own football cleats, as well as t-shirt and shorts. Each player will complete 4 days of non-contact heat acclimation practices, followed by 7 contact practices in pads for a total of 11 practices before they are allowed to participate in a game per UIL. We have 14 practice days before our first game, so having the physical completed and being at practice everyday when school starts is really important.

Parent support is key to having a positive season. All the work done at home to have student athletes well rested, performing well in all classes, eating a nutritious diet, hydrated properly is greatly appreciated. We also know that it is a considerable time commitment to travel for practice pickups, as well as travel to and from games. The coaches and players appreciate your efforts to be at the games. In addition to these efforts, we do need parent support in providing pre-game meals as well as any post season celebration. There will be a parent meeting the second week of school to discuss and plan these efforts.

If you have any general football questions, or specific to 7th grade football please contact Coach Gardner at (512) 414-2706 or justin.gardner@austinisd.org. If you have any questions specific to 8th grade football contact Coach Rydolph at (512) 814-1154 or kennard.rydolph@austinisd.org.

Hornet Herald - August 1, 2019

posted Aug 1, 2019, 6:05 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

During the summer months (actually most months) the Kealing administrative team entertains itself with movie quotes and song lyrics that describe the state of affairs. There are few students around so we have to find joy in other places! This summer has been full of gems as we have weathered all of the exciting changes in our building.

If you have been captured by the Lion King reboot, sing along with us. “From the day we arrived on the planet. And blinking, step into the sun. There’s more to see than can ever be seen. More to do than can ever be done.” That’s our song for the week thanks to the large amount of construction taking place on campus. It’s not completely applicable though because it will be done. The crews are moving quickly and it’s all coming together. We are finishing up week three of no air conditioning. Our custodians have done an incredible job keeping up the pace while staying cool.

There will still be work happening during this week’s new student transition camp but the building is safe. Our new students will get the full Chip and Joanna Gaines experience. Some part of the first floor will be in disrepair and the stairs look like they have seen better days. The new students will see the “before” next week and be wowed by the “after” on their first day of school. We are excited for the transformation!

This week’s movie quote comes from Poltergeist:

“Carol Anne – listen to me. Do not go into the light. Stop where you are. Turn away from it. Don’t even look at it.”

You (parents and students) are Carol Anne. The Austin ISD Cloud is the light. Don’t go in. Turn away from it. Don’t even look at it. We are still making schedule changes and what you see will very likely not be what you get. Do not go into the light. The schedules are not yet accurate.

So what about student schedules?
See below for the updated scheduling timeline. I am pushing the mail date out a week to make some small structural changes to the master schedule. I apologize for making you all wait a little longer. I know you’re anxious! You will receive schedule verification and first day information when your schedule arrives in the mail. All questions or concerns about student schedules will be addressed through the schedule verification process so please read carefully once you receive your schedule in the mail.

Austin ISD Back to School Bash
This Saturday is the Austin ISD Back to School Bash and Safety Fair at the Parmer Event Center. Stop by for free school supplies, educational presentations, and health screenings. Visit the Austin ISD website for more information.

Got supplies?
Supply sales are starting in stores and I am sure some of you are ready to catch some deals. The basic school supply lists for the 2019-2020 school year can be found on the Kealing website. These lists include items that students will need for their core classes. There are also a few supplies that will be delivered to Advisory teachers during the first week of school to be used across all Kealing classrooms. Since the students all take a variety of electives with different needs, be on the lookout for a few additional requests during the first two weeks of school.

Hey Hornets,

We've made it to mid-July and I have some updates for you. If you are receiving this as a former Kealing parent who wants out of the group, send an email to kms-hornet-herald+unsubscribe@googlegroups.comIf this does not apply to you, happy reading!

As you can see, the bond projects are moving along. We are looking forward to a larger and much-improved health office and a modified program office. All of the stairs will have new tread and a number of improvements are being made to support robotics and technology career spaces. Our students and staff will definitely appreciate the air conditioning system upgrade (unfortunately we are largely without A/C for the next three weeks while the system is being updated). Our main floor offices are shuffling around too and we will have a new and improved counseling center. It’s an exciting upgrade that will result in increased support for our students. The crew is moving quickly and has stayed on schedule so far. My fingers are crossed that the work will be all done before students return!

Volleyball Camp is Coming

Kealing Volleyball Camp is July 29 – August 1. Due to the A/C repair, camp is being held at Gus Garcia Middle School. The camp is open to all students who will attend Kealing during the 2019-2020 school year. The fee is $65 and scholarships are available. Click here for more information or contact Coach Brynie at jaime.brynie@austinisd.org.
