Kealing Center Stage
Thanks so much for everyone who attended, participate and pitched in somewhere along the way.  I have a special shout out to Dee Gonzalez, Jen Winkelman, Brent Winkelman, Sara Bircher, Ellen Anspon, Robyn Ostryniec and Nicole Longnion for the many hours of volunteering - simply amazing! and our very own Spiral Notebooks, the musically talented Kealing teachers who know how to rock!  There are many others, as it takes a village, and we are all doing it to so that we can support our Kealing community.  Thank you.

Digital Citizenship Guide - FREE to AISD Families & PTAs
This was the guide that we presented at the last PTA meeting.  It is VERY informative.

Stratfor, a local company with global reach, has created a new Digital Citizenship Guide for students ages 12-18. It’s part of Stratfor’s Cyber Security Basics series. The report’s author calls students in this age group the riskiest technology users because they are beginning to explore a wide range of technologies that are available.

This 108-page report is written to help provide tools and guidance for parents, teachers, and students about topics such as social media, privacy, cyber-bullying, online gaming, dark web, digital rights and more. Most users have to buy the report. The author is making it available at no cost to the AISD community. To get the report for free, please use this link: https://www.austinisd.org/technology/cyber-safety

Scroll down to the two links for Stratfor and it will take you to a landing page.

People just need to provide name and email address and it will bring up the report in a new window.  From there, they can download it.

Kealing Center Stage auction items are still available online.
Their are tickets to the 6th grade movie party and for the Frisbee game against the Kealing teachers, the tinkering projects and several other miscellaneous items that have been marked down.

REFLECTIONS
This year, and on its 50th anniversary, 948 Reflections entries arrived at the Texas PTA State Office for judging. Of those entries, 540 will be awarded and 30 have advanced to National PTA for national-level judging. Congratulations to Austin ISD's Vivienne Rayman-King (intermediate in Dance Choreography) for an Award of Excellence and advanced to National PTA. This is what Texas PTA talked about all the entries "We were so impressed by the entries we received. The planning, time, imagination, and sheer talent poured into each work of art was astounding – especially the different interpretations on our theme, Heroes Around Me. Thank you to our students for sharing so much with us. Thank you to our parents for encouraging the arts at home and in school. And thank you to our PTA volunteers for bringing the Reflections program to campuses across the state. Our State Award Ceremony will be held this summer. Please watch for ceremony details in the near future."

ACPTA Back the Future 2019-2020  ( Sept 28 @ AISD PAC)
Please make plans to join us on September 28, 2019, for the second annual Back the Future event! It’s a free, fun event for families and open to all. Last year’s event featured 100 exhibitors and brought people from more than 70 AISD schools. Visitors enjoyed student performances, tons of exciting free activities, some great free food and lots of terrific information for your PTA. The goal is to connect local organizations with parent leaders, so you can invite them to bring great programs to your campus. Most exhibitors offer free programs and more than half offer programs in Spanish and other languages.

Please save the date! If you want to help organize this great event, please email president@austincouncilpta.org. If your students would like to perform, please email vpverticalteams@austincouncilpta.org. We hope to see you there!

ACPTA Advocacy - Plug into legislative actions for public schools in Austin ISD
Austin Council PTA (ACPTA) is building a resource pool and database of parents, educators, and community members interested in taking part in legislative actions throughout the current session and more importantly, beyond. To determine your interest area, please fill out the survey.
It has 7 questions and should take about 3 minutes. Completing it does not mean you are required to participate.
Once your survey input is received, you will receive a follow-up email within 1-2 weeks. ACPTA will contact you regarding ways to support advocacy efforts related to PTA legislative priorities such as Literacy by 3rd Grade, Juvenile Justice, Public School Funding Reform, Assessments, just to name a few.
The survey is in English and Spanish.

Hornet Herald - April 7, 2019

posted Apr 7, 2019, 6:54 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornets!

This week will be a quiet week on campus since our 7th and 8th grade students will demonstrate some of their learning by taking the STAAR Test. Tuesday and Wednesday will be regular testing days and we will conduct make-up testing for the rest of the week for any students who may be absent. Our student have been working hard all year and we know they are ready to show what they know. Below is the schedule:
  • Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 8th Grade Math (except Algebra I testers); 7th Grade Writing
  • Wednesday, April 10, 2019 - 8th Grade Reading; 7th Grade Advanced Math (only students who take the 8th grade STAAR)
So that our 7th and 8th grade students are home early and well-rested, there will be no after school events or late buses Monday and Tuesday. Students don't need to do anything to prepare. That part of the work is already done! Please help your student get a good night of rest and be sure they eat a healthy breakfast so they are ready to go.

Our 6th grade students will participate in Field Day Tuesday and head to the Paramount Theater Wednesday. To add to the quiet testing environment, we will operate a closed campus this week. If you are hoping to stop by to visit or to eat lunch with your student, we'll be back to our usual high energy campus next week!

Sincerely,

Kenisha Coburn
Proud Principal

Saturday, April 6, 2019 * 7-10:30pm * Thinkery
Live Music, Fun, Food, and Community

Hey Hornets!

This week will sprinkle us all with special bits of excitement so I hope you are all wearing your dancing shoes!

Wednesday and Thursday will be atypical. Dr. Terrence Roberts, a member of the Little Rock Nine, will be coming to participate in a seminar with our 7th grade students. We are lucky to have living history on our campus as our students learn about Civil Rights and Social Justice through Social Studies and Language Arts content. 7th grade Magnet students will also take a trip to The Science Mill so the pair of days will be packed.

Friday is the Spring Fling dance and we hope to see our students there to hang out with friends or battle on the dance floor. They work hard together daily and we believe it’s important for them to take time out to have fun with each other too. Wristbands are $5 and will be sold Friday during lunches and at the door.

Our students are not the only ones with moves……….Kealing teachers have been known to cut a rug. Don’t believe me? Come check them out at Kealing Center Stage from 7:00-10:30 pm on April 6 at the Thinkery. I think last week I called our entertainment for the evening The Silent Notebooks. Forgive me because The SPIRAL Notebooks is a band made up of dancing and singing Kealing staff members. They are far from silent and will certainly put on a show! Kealing Center Stage is our PTA’s largest fundraiser and this effort is vital in supporting many of the opportunities available at Kealing. More than anything though, this is an adult-only opportunity to build community with Hornet families, old and new. I look forwarding to seeing you there!

In addition to all of the fun I have shared, we have some important business to tend to this week.

In Science classes, Kealing students will participate in the Austin ISD human sexuality unit of study during the month of May. This Tuesday I will be available in the Library from 5:00 – 6:00 pm providing information about the program so feel free to join me to learn more. Student opt-out forms will be coming home through science teachers this week.

The Magnet application period is over and we are welcoming over 300 new Magnet students to the program next year. This weekend will be the first new Magnet celebration so we look forward to seeing some of our future Hornets on campus. We are also thrilled to be welcoming a large class of new Academy students so we are expecting to have a full house at KMS next year. Thanks to all of the parents who have volunteered to help us welcome our new families aboard.

After this week, we’ll be winding down to gear up for this year’s first round of STAAR testing. On April 9-10, we will administer the 7th grade STAAR Writing, 8th grade STAAR Math, and 8th grade STAAR Reading assessments. Though there is variation due to the variety in math courses, all 7th and 8th grade students will test on one or both of the testing days. We encourage you all to plan to have a restful weekend as our students prepare to show all they have learned so far this year.

Thanks for reading.

Hello Hornet Family,

Welcome back! I hope you had a relaxing Spring Break and took some time to enjoy the beautiful Spring weather. The rest was much needed. Our students worked right up to the break and I’d like to share some recent successes with you all.

Kealing Orchestra and Band students were busy before the break since UIL competition season is in full swing during the month of March. They had a stellar showing with all participating bands and Orchestras bringing home sweepstakes. The students in these programs work diligently to develop as musicians and we are glad to see the work of the directors and students pay off. Strong work! Next up are guitar, choir, and full Orchestra.

Pranathi Jammula strikes again. For the second consecutive year, Pranathi came out on top and will represent Central Texas at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Her March 14 victory helped us all kick off Spring Break with a smile. Take a look at KXAN’s coverage. We’ll be wishing her well as she prepares to take on the nation in the coming months.

Over the break the Columbia Scholastic Press Association held its annual scholastic journalism convention in New York City. The Vespa, Kealing’s yearbook and Inkblot, Kealing’s literary magazine took home top honors earning the CSPA Gold Crown award. Inkblot has earned this distinction before but this is the FIRST TIME the Kealing yearbook has been recognized with this national honor. Kudos to Ms. Scott who continues to the provide the highest quality journalism instruction and to the students who turn her impeccable preparation into action.

Mark your calendar for Kealing Center Stage (KCS)! We hope to see you all at KCS on Saturday, April 6 from 7:00 – 10:30 pm at the Thinkery. Come and join us for an adult-only evening of food, fun, and dancing with incredible entertainment provided by Silent Notebooks, a band made up of Kealing staff members. Kealing Center Stage is our PTA’s largest fundraiser and this effort is vital in supporting many of the opportunities available at Kealing. More than anything though, this is an opportunity to build community with Hornet families, old and new. I hope to see you all there on April 6. Tickets are $25 per person and sponsorships are available too. Click here to join the party.

Warm regards,

Kenisha Coburn

AISD Food Service Survey
At Austin ISD, we are committed to all students. In Nutrition and Food Services we strive to expand food access, serve healthy, tasty meals, and provide opportunities to learn about nutrition, cultural foodways, and the food system.

Salad bars, food trucks, plant-based options, clean labels, global flavors, locally sourced and sustainably raised foods are all ways we are reinventing the urban school meal experience at Austin ISD. Positive changes have been put in place over the past few years. It is important that we continue to gather feedback from our school communities.

We’d like your feedback. This information will be used to help create future menus to best meet your needs. Past feedback helped us to create more balanced menus with healthier versions of student favorites paired with new, global dishes.

Follow this link to the Survey
(*Note: you can respond to this survey for multiple students/schools if needed. Just click on the link again!)

Making the choice to eat school meals positively impacts all students across the district. The more students fed each day, the more funds are available to spend on higher quality food. We plan to increase the use of local, sustainable and clean label foods but need student participation to help support these initiatives.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback!

AISD Facilities Survey
Austin ISD is embarking on its update of the Facility Master Plan, a long-range roadmap to modernizing all district facilities.  We want your insights and perspectives on how the district can best support and strengthen district-wide priorities in the areas of:
  • athletics and fitness;
  • Career and Technical Education, career preparation;
  • fine arts and creative learning.
We want to hear from all AISD families because this impacts current programs, but also those that will serve students far into the future. Take the online survey to help us shape our #AISDFuture.

Every day, we are proud to provide programs that nurture the range of our students’ talents both in and out of the classroom.

To fulfill the promise of a high-quality public education for all our students, we are seeking input from academic departments, as well as school and community stakeholders like you, to better understand the needs of our communities and help guide the development of future capital improvements.

Thank you,
The Facility Master Plan 2019 Team

Hornet Herald - February 24, 2019

posted Feb 24, 2019, 2:04 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Feb 24, 2019, 2:08 PM by Kenisha Coburn ]

Hello Kealing Families,

The last few weeks of February have been busy in the classroom and outside of the classroom and we’ll be maintaining the pace this week. Keep reading for budget updates, KMS student celebrations, choice sheet info, and an A/B rotation change for the week of February 25, 2019.

Our chess club has been busy all year and the hard work is resulting in wins. Tharun Ekambaram, David Gu, and Milo Kevorkian represented Kealing at the Region VI Scholastic Championships and took fourth place for the South-Central Regions of Texas. Ms. Kinsman’s room is now housing the new chess club championship hardware!

Ms. Shultz took a large group of 6th grade Hornets to the Austin Regional Science Fair to compete against top rated projects in the area. Mark Sanchez and Ali Scott won the Passion for Science Award for designing a new way for football helmets to prevent concussions. This is a distinguished honor awarded to only one group of middle school students for showing determination and a passion for science out of hundreds of participants. Justin Wickelgren received a first-place trophy in the Computer Science: Systems Software division. Justin designed a software program, using his coding skills, that will assist in scheduling students class choice saving school systems valuable time and decreases the opportunity for human error. Justin also won the Broadcom Masters SSP Award which means he was nominated in the top 10% of all 6th, 7th & 8th grade participants in the nation. We are so proud of the work each of the participating students put in to their passion projects!

Choice sheets are coming! Counselors will visit with students in their Social Studies class this week to help students complete their choice sheets through a Google form. The new process will allow us to have all of data electronically so that we can build the best possible master schedule for the 2019-2020 school year. The course book is live on the Kealing website now along with a planning sheet. There have been a number of changes to clarify requirements and course descriptions. There are also some exciting new course offerings so we encourage you to take a look with your student. Students will gain access to the choice sheets during the counselor visits and be able to made edits through March 8, 2019. Copies of their selections will be sent to their AISD email addresses too.

I hope you all have been following the Austin ISD Budget conversations. This week I spoke to KMAG about the Austin ISD budget priorities and the incredible impact the $65 million Recapture payment is having on Austin ISD. Take a look at these budget slides for more info. As we plan for the 2019-2020 school year, we are preparing with a smaller budget. I do not anticipate any adverse impact on course offerings and expect to continue to improve on the high-quality programming we are known for at KMS. I will keep you posted if there are any late-game surprises as we plan for 2019-2020!

Finally, the schedule for the week of February 25, 2019 will be different due to a change in the A/B rotation. We will operate an ABBAA week and have an alternate schedule Thursday, February 28, 2019 to accommodate some campus guests. The classes will be ordered differently but it will otherwise be KMS learning as usual.

I'm off to enjoy more of this fabulous weather before we kick off the week!

Kind regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Thank Yous
Thank so much to our coffee cart crew, the goodie provider’s and all the Secret Pals who drove across town to deliver their packages last week .
**************
Dear Secret Pal Family, I really enjoyed my cup of hot coffee and all of my cool items. The coffee travel mug will be a great remembrance every morning of all of your kindness and caring. The hand cream is just wonderful especially with the cold weather right now . The desk supplies are adorable! Someone who came into the office was admiring the cup and then said ""they are wishing you good luck because the trunk on the elephant paperclips is turned up."" How cool is that!
*************
Thank you again for all of your kind notes and gifts, thoughtfulness on my birthday.
I greatly appreciate ALL of you!

Thank you so much to my Secret Pal. Your gifts were incredibly thoughtful and generous, and just what I needed to get through dreary February. I cannot wait to start reading my new book this weekend while eating chocolate covered almonds!!

Hornet Herald - April, 7 2019

posted Feb 24, 2019, 2:04 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Apr 7, 2019, 6:49 PM ]
