Hornet Herald - September 20, 2020

posted Sep 20, 2020, 2:34 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

I hope you all were able to get outdoors this weekend and enjoy the cooler weather since predictions are calling for rain this week. My family and I appreciated the fresh air while walking trails this yesterday and there were no complaints about the cooler weather.

This Wednesday, Kealing staff is excited to welcome our families to Back to School Night. Similar to what students experience, Back to School Night will consist of both asynchronous and synchronous opportunities to engage with your child’s teacher.

Tomorrow you will receive an email with your child’s schedule along with introduction videos from their teachers. You can watch these videos as your schedule allows (asynchronously) and then submit questions to the google form, attached in the email. Kealing staff will answer questions (synchronously) during a livestream teacher panel Wednesday evening. You can access the livestream on the front page of our website.

Heads ups Hornets: Beginning this week teachers will begin providing new learning tasks on Fridays which students are required to complete asynchronously. The Friday bell schedule has been updated to provide a guide for students to plan which course lessons to work on and when. As a reminder, Advisory attendance is required and Office Hours, by departments, will continue to be assigned and available to students who need additional support.

Last week, the district sent out communication outlining plans for reopening campuses on October 5th. You also should have received a survey requesting your family to indicate your preference on continuing at home learning or opting to return to campus. There are many reasons families will decide to remain at home or send their students back to campus. I would like to share with you and your family, what to expect with on-campus learning in case you have any questions.

  • Families will need to complete the AISD COVID-19 Screener prior to arriving on campus. Upon arrival, Kealing staff will ask to view your student’s results and take our Hornets’ temperature.

  • Students who pass the Health Screener will immediately be escorted to their classroom and remain there for the day.

  • All classes will continue to be taught virtually. Students will continue utilizing BLEND and Zoom to access their teachers and learning opportunities.

  • The teacher or staff member assigned to your student’s classroom are teaching their own classes. Students will continue to rely on their online teachers for assistance.

  • Students will remain in their classrooms during meal times.

  • Students and staff are required to appropriately wear masks, covering the nose, mouth and chin while on campus.

  • PPE (face masks, hand sanitizer, desk shields, gloves, etc.) will be provided to each classroom

  • Currently, classrooms are set up to allow up to nine students in a classroom to allow for social distancing.

  • Breaks will be built in to allow students the chance to go outside when feasible.

  • Dismissals will be staggered to maintain social distancing in the hallways

Your response to the district’s is extremely important as we begin planning for October 5th. You can access the survey by clicking this link www.bit.ly/aisdsurv. The survey locks once you have submitted your responses. If you need the survey to be reopened, you can email survey@austinisd.org

As you can see, there are many things taking place at Kealing, as administration and staff continue to support our students virtually and prepare for the reopening of our campus. We appreciate the support and kind emails we are receiving from our Hornet families. We can definitely feel the LOVE.

See you all Wednesday!

Mr. Estes

No-Fuss Fundraiser
Kealing's 'No-Fuss' fundraiser is off-and-running!  Prior to the 1st day of school, over 100 families had donated more than $12,000 - see PTA website for the latest.  What an amazing testament to Kealing's school spirit and all the parents involved.  Over the next four weeks, as we march towards our goal of $55,000, we will also be sharing stories, insights, and particulars that highlight Kealing's school spirit and its wonderful school community.   As for the fundraiser - donating via our PTA link is quick, easy, and can be done at any time you choose.   'No Fuss' means you should not be troubled by this.  Donate what you can, when you can.  'No Fuss' also means that funds will be collected without the added trouble of students selling wrapping paper, candy, or other items.  We hope that you can help support this effort, where 100% of your donation goes directly to support Kealing's students, staff, and school community.

Stay tuned! Throughout the fundraiser, we will be updating the Hornet Herald or using School Messenger to share various tidbits about our wonderful school and what makes Kealing so special.

Thank you to all those that have already donated! Let's keep it going!

Learning Preference Survey

The current survey will provide information to campus principals regarding all students enrolled for the 20-21 school year. This information is important so that we can plan for your child to continue accessing learning opportunities at-home or by returning to school. Please respond to this survey for each of your students. Your decision at this time is needed so we can prepare accordingly. You can access the survey by visiting www.bit.ly/aisdsurv

iReady Diagnostic

This week, all ELA and Math teachers will be administering (remotely) a diagnostic assessment in iReady. This online program replaces Istation assessments and assignments. The diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs.

There are two diagnostics, one for reading and a separate one for math. You can learn more about how to support your student(s) with the iReady diagnostic by clicking here.

Please encourage your child to try their best on the diagnostic. The data we receive, will allow teachers to provide interventions or enrichment opportunities for students based on the results.

Fall Athletics

Kealing Middle School staff and coaches understand the significance being involved in extra-curricular activities play in a student's overall development. Being a member of an athletic team allow students to create goals, understand the importance of teamwork, and character development.

As much as we would love to be back on the field/court this fall, our main goal is to protect the health and safety of our students and staff. With this in mind, we have decided not to participate in strength and condition or athletic practices while in the virtual learning setting. As we begin phasing students back into the building, Kealing administration and athletic coaches will examine data, safety protocols, and available transportation to determine Kealing's athletic participation moving forward.

As decisions are made, we will be sure to communicate them with our students and families.

Veterans Hiring Event

Hornet Herald - September 13, 2020

posted Sep 13, 2020, 8:00 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

YAYYYYY!!!! We’ve officially made it through our first week of school. Kealing Administrators were able to visit several of our classrooms and we were amazed by the level of student engagement. We expected quiet zoom rooms as students grapple with becoming comfortable with the virtual setting. Instead we were treated to robust content discussions and students participating in the lesson activities. Kealing teachers created learning environments where our students immediately felt comfortable in their zoom rooms. Our Hornets did not miss a beat and are quickly becoming proficient in navigating the online learning setting. Even with all the positives, there were a few glitches during the first week. Several of our teachers and students experienced technical difficulties. There were internet outages due to the weather. Some students were unable to access their teacher’s zoom rooms. We are so proud of how our students reacted in, what may have been, a stressful situation. They immediately emailed their teachers. Some even visited the zoom “Support Room” to receive assistance from administrators and counselors. Moving forward, it is important to remember these situations WILL occur. As we continue with virtual learning, please communicate with your teachers and grade level administrators and counselors when these situations arise. We are here to assist.

This past week, the district emailed a survey for families to indicate their learning preference beginning October 6th. To help guide your decision, several of you reached out to inquire what on-campus learning will look during this first phase. Traditionally, middle school students transition several times a day. This approach means that students interact with hundreds of different individuals in close proximity each day. For the safety of our students, staff, and families, on-campus learning will look different until circumstances improve.

We will create learning groups of students who will remain together in one classroom for most of the school day. Instruction will be provided through BLEND and other online tools. Learning groups will be assigned a teacher or a small group of teachers for support. If conditions permit at some point, there may be limited transition for Fine Arts, Career and Technical Education, and Athletics. Breaks will be built into the day to support social and emotional learning and outdoor experiences when possible. This approach will allow students to have safe interactions with peers and rely on teachers for additional, targeted support. Of course, plans can change depending on recommendations from area health authorities and TEA. As additional information becomes available, I will be sure to communicate any updates.

I would like to thank all of our Hornet families for your continued support. I have heard from so many families in the past few weeks offering Kealing staff words of encouragement and gratitude. I cannot truly express through word how much we appreciate you and the partnerships we have with our Kealing families and community. This is what makes Kealing such an amazing place.  THANK YOU!

Be sure to check the information below this week’s additional updates.

Have a great week!

Mr. Estes

Hello Hornet Families,

The day we have all anticipated is finally upon us. After an extended summer break, the school year will officially begin virtually this Tuesday, September 8th. The first day of school is a B day and students are to report to their B5 class by 8:10 am Tuesday morning.

I am unsure if there has ever been as much excitement for the first day of school as it currently is with Kealing staff. Although we will begin online, we can not wait to see our Hornets virtually.

Yesterday, we emailed your student’s schedule along with Zoom links for each course. Please review this email with your student and practice logging into BLEND and Zoom. Considering we will use these two platforms to access educational content, it is important students are comfortable navigating both programs. Administrators and School Counselors will be available, via Zoom, Tuesday to provide assistance if students experience any issues. Our Zoom link is here and will also be posted on the Kealing Middle School website.

For those of you who are not familiar with BLEND, it is AISD’s educational platform that will house your student’s class information, including assignments, schedules, course materials and contact information for their teachers. If you are new to BLEND or if you need a refresher course, please visit this “One-Stop-Shop” BLEND resource here (Spanish version) for all of your BLEND questions. Another resource I would like to share with you, is this week’s Middle School smore

We can not wait to see all students in our virtual classrooms starting with B5 at 8:10 Tuesday morning. Please remember to take your first day of school pictures and upload them to our padlet.

Looking forward to another year of Kealing It.

Hornet Herald - August 30, 2020

Hello Hornet Families,

What a scorcher it was this weekend. My family and I enjoyed spending a lot of time at the pool in an attempt to stay cool and hanging out with each other. I hope you also found time to spend time with your families. It sounds like the triple digit weather is sticking around for a while. Make sure you are staying well hydrated and safe.

Our first Kealing Kickoff occurred this weekend and it was a success. A HUGE thank you to our staff and PTA volunteers who assisted with this event. Although we were under a heat advisory, we all had a great time.  Kealing staff could not stop talking about how much they enjoyed seeing our current, and even a few former, Hornets. If you were unable to attend the event this past Saturday, stop by campus Wednesday, September 2 from 8:00 - 3:00 to pick up your pre-ordered materials and district requested chromebooks.

We are approximately a week out from the start of school. Just a reminder, from September 8 - October 5 all learning will take place virtually. Any student who does not have access to the technology necessary to take part in remote learning, may access virtual learning on-campus until they receive appropriate technology.

After speaking with many of our families and teachers, we have adjusted our virtual bell schedule. Initially, students were required to attend all eight of their courses on Fridays. With our new virtual bell schedule, Advisory is the only course ALL students are REQUIRED to attend on Fridays. All other classes will operate as Office Hours and no new learning tasks will be made available on Friday. Teachers will be online to respond to student questions and provide support. Office hours will be open for all students to use as a ‘study hall.’  Some students may be assigned Office Hours with a teacher based on performance throughout the week. Come to ask questions, complete assignments, clarify directions, or work with a peer. You can access the new virtual bell schedule here.

That is all for this edition.

Have a great week.

This was an exciting week for us at Kealing as we welcomed our teachers back to (virtual) campus. Although we were not together in the physical sense, the same energy and enthusiasm Kealing staff is known for, was present in our sessions.

The majority of the week was spent in campus based and district professional development focusing on becoming familiar with Zoom features, community building activities, establishing virtual learning expectations and engaging in various sessions provided by AISD. While all of the PD was important, the highlight of the week was the Advisory call teachers began making. After being away from our students for over five months, simply having the opportunity to speak with many of our students was a welcomed experience. Teachers will continue reaching out to students this week. Calls will come from either private or unknown numbers. Please answer calls from these numbers this week.

On Saturday, August 29th we are hosting our Kealing Kickoff, a one-stop-shop distribution day. If you ordered a district assigned hotspot, school supply kit or last year’s yearbook that you have not picked up, you will be able to do so on Saturday. Also available will be, PTA Swag Bags, athletic information and a limited number of school supplies filled backpacks. Additional information on this event is below.

We still have a large number of students who are slated to attend Kealing but have yet to register. If you have not registered your student for this year, please do so here to avoid students being removed from scheduled classes.

As you know, the first four weeks of school (September 8 - October 5) is taking place virtually. If your student(s) is in need of a chromebook or hotspot to access their classes, please contact Christina Romero, christina.romero@austinisd.org to make a technology request.

Have a great week.

Hello Families,

I would like to thank all of the families who joined the Kealing Administration for Parent Orientation earlier last week. Although virtually, we thoroughly enjoyed interacting with you. If you were unable to attend, a copy of the presentation along with FAQs are available on our website under the “Fall 2020” tab.

This week, we are excited to welcome back our Kealing faculty and staff. They have worked extremely hard throughout the summer to develop high quality and engaging lessons for students during virtual learning. We can not wait to see our students take advantage of the innovative learning opportunities.

There have been many changes over the past week related to the start of school. Earlier today, I sent out a letter detailing the district’s reopening plan along with an outline of need to know dates. This letter is also available on our website under “Announcements”.

That is all of this edition. Have a great week.

Hornet Herald August 9, 2020

Hello Kealing Families,

It was a treat seeing so many students participate in New Hornet Camp this week.  There was great attendance, so much fun taking place and each breakout room was filled with excitement for the new school year to begin. Our teachers led our new students through a variety of activities that will help them get adjusted to life as a Hornet.

As you may have heard, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted Thursday evening to delay the start of school to September 8th. This will allow Kealing staff additional time to survey students’ technology needs, prepare for virtual learning, and continue developing safety measures for our students and staff to eventually return to the building. Even with the new start date, not much will change from information you have previously received. Important reminders include:

  • All learning will take place virtually for the first four weeks of school (Sept. 8 - Oct. 5th)

  • Our bell schedule will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous learning.  However, our existing bell schedule will be adjusted for an additional 10 minutes and will be shared soon.

  • Attendance is REQUIRED for all synchronous classes.

As additional information comes in, we will be sure to share it with you.

Over the weekend, you and your student should have received an email with your student’s schedule.  If your student has: a missing period, notice they are enrolled in a class they have already successfully completed, all core classes are on the same day, or missing a requested/required language, please have them request a “Schedule Verification” VIRTUAL meeting with their counselor. This is done by completing the appropriate grade level form:

6th Grade Verification Appointment: https://form.jotform.com/202203591386149

7th Grade Verification Appointment:  https://form.jotform.com/202203867398158

8th Grade Verification Appointment:  https://form.jotform.com/202194645053048

Schedule verifications will take place from 9:00am - 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 6:00pm on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12.  Zoom links to meet with counselors virtually will be sent upon submission of the appointment form.  Elective change requests will not be addressed at this time or prior to the start of school.  Please allow our team time to respond to all scheduling inquiries as priority will lie first with families scheduling an appointment.

Also, this week we will host virtual Parent Orientation and a Meet & Greet with Mr. Estes, our new Interim Principal.  Parent Orientation is Monday, August 10th at the following times:  10am, 2pm, 5pm, 6:30pm (Spanish).  We’d love for you to attend one of these sessions and ask questions through our live chat!  Links for both events will be posted on the Kealing Middle School website homepage.  If you are unable to attend one of these live sessions, orientation videos will be made available on the website within the week.

We hope to see you all (virtually) this week.

Hey Hornet Families,

Can you believe it is August y’all? We say it to each other every year but this summer has really flown by. We hope you all have found opportunities to create memories with your families this summer.

We understand much has changed over the course of the past few weeks. If you and your student have changed your mind or have yet to submit your plans regarding your “Return to Learn” decision, please complete the short survey here.

Although the summer is about over, it is an exciting time for us at Kealing. The first week of August is typically one of our favorite weeks of the year. It grants us the opportunity to welcome our newest Hornets to campus. Despite this year’s New Hornet Camp taking place virtually, Kealing teachers and administrators are pumped up nonetheless.  We have sent initial notifications assigning your student to a particular session. Additional communication with a zoom link will be sent out this week, so please look out for these emails.  For those of you who are new to Kealing, New Hornet Camp is a fun opportunity for students to get to know some of our amazing teachers and begin building relationships with their new classmates. To our families who are not new to Kealing, reflect on your student’s experience at New Hornet Camp. You will quickly realize how much they have changed since nervously walking into the doors of our building. It is truly an honor as we witness your students grow socially and academically throughout the year.  THANK YOU!!!

As most of you know, Mrs. Coburn recently accepted the Executive Director of Middle Schools position. We are proud to have been a part of everything sthat was accomplished while she was at Kealing and wish her success in her new role. We assure you, our teachers, staff and administrators are committed to providing our students the safe, inclusive, and educational opportunities you are accustomed to.

Hi Hornet Families,

I hope you enjoyed watching the weekend rain fall. I soaked in the downpour while out riding my bike Saturday. It was a welcomed, cool break from the Texas summer. Hopefully you all are staying cool too.

The Kealing team is working hard in preparing to welcome our students back for the 2020-2021 school year and I know you have a lot of questions. Take a look at the slides and listen to the recordings (English, Spanish) for a better picture of what to expect from virtual learning at Kealing at the start of the year.

I am thrilled to introduce Diana Riley, a new member of the Kealing family.

Hello everyone! My name is Diana Riley and I am the new Assistant Orchestra Director and Guitar Teacher for Kealing Middle School. I recently graduated from Texas A&M University Kingsville with a Bachelor’s in Music With an All-level Teacher Certification. My primary instrument is the Viola and my secondary instrument is the Violin, but I am able to teach all string instruments due to the training and learning I’ve received at the university. I have played for symphony orchestra, string orchestra, chamber orchestra, and mariachi. I have also gained professional experience through teaching for the Javelina String Youth Orchestra at TAMUK, teaching private violin and cello lessons, and student teaching. Music has been very important and life changing to me, which is why I am now here. As a musician I have not only learned how to play a musical instrument, but I have learned to develop essential skills such as teamwork, discipline, creativity, listening, critical thinking (and I could name many more). My goal is to not only teach students how to play their instrument, but I also want to help them express themselves and be able to think critically and abstractly through the musical concepts I will be teaching them.

That's all for this edition.

Take Care,

Kenisha Coburn

Hello Hornet Families,

I hope you are all staying healthy and safe! It’s been a busy week for me at home and at work (at home) but the time has been well spent.

You should have received an announcement from Dr. Cruz indicating that Austin ISD students will participate in 100% remote learning for the first three weeks of the 2020-2021 school year. I am sure that you have a lot of questions that you would like answered about what this will look like for students. Here is what I can share with you so far:

  • We will operate a full-day schedule daily that will include time for 4 hours of synchronous (all together, live) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning.

  • BLEND will be the platform that we use campus-wide.

  • We received some great feedback from families about the spring remote learning period and will be improving pieces of what I consider a very strong start, including: streamlined and consistent BLEND home pages, clearer feedback on progress for students and parents, increased academic depth and complexity, and training for parents to help BLEND be a more effective tool.

I am sure you would like a more detailed picture and can assure you that one is forthcoming. I want to make sure that all of the pieces have been reviewed thoroughly by staff and a subset of parents so that broader communication is clear to everyone. As was the case in the spring, you will be able to join parent webinars as soon as it is all ready to share. In the meantime, know that the Kealing team has been working all summer to improve some skills and acquire others. We have a strong staff and strong community. We will be ready to serve our students well in August.

There will be a number of virtual events as we lead up to the start of the school year. To assist with our planning and management of the virtual platforms, the new student orientations, schedule verification times, and all other events posted on the calendar below will require advance registration. Go ahead and mark your calendars. Registration links will be available in future editions of Hornet Herald.

We have a few new staff members who we will introduce in the coming weeks and we are kicking it off with one very special addition. After years of service at Kealing Middle School, Ms. Dee Gonzales retired at the end of the school year. I am thrilled to introduce Ms. Dianna Perez, the new Kealing Parent Support Specialist.

Hello! My name is Dianna Perez and I am so excited to be a part of the Kealing Family. I look forward to making new friends and building strong bridges of community amongst the school, the families and the neighborhood. A little about me. I recently graduated from Huston Tillotson University with a degree in Education. I have 25 years in Early Childhood Education and 10 in primary and secondary education. Five of those years in Life Skills as a teacher’s assistant. I am the mother of three children; Gabriel 25, Noah 21 and Bella 17. I am an avid baker and enjoy cooking. In the summer, I teach children ages 7-10 years of age to cook at my home based Camp Chef Kids business.

Also, after decades serving the Kealing community, David Jarrott has moved on to help build a brand new orchestra program in Hays CISD. We are excited to have Madeline Horrell serve as the Kealing Head Orchestra Director. Ms. Horrell has shown incredible musicianship, instruction, and leadership in a short time at Kealing and she is ready to take our already stellar program to a new place. We have hired a new assistant director and will feature them in the next edition of Hornet Herald.

That is all for this week! We are approaching the beginning of the school year so the regularly scheduled Sunday editions of Hornet Herald will resume on July 26, 2020.

Take care,

Kenisha Coburn

The 2020-2021 school supply lists can be found here. We are glad to partner with EPI to offer prepackaged supply boxes that can be purchased at a reasonable price. Orders can be made between July 20-23 and the site order information and order code will be posted at the top of the KMS website when available on Monday. Families who purchase supplies this way will collect them through a drive through pick-up at Kealing during the first week of the school year.

We know that some families may need support in acquiring the necessary supplies. Austin ISD will be providing a small number of backpacks since the usual Austin ISD Back to School Bash will not take place this year but we know this will not meet the entirety of the need. If you are willing and able to support a student, we encourage you to purchase an additional supply pack from EPI.
