Hornet Herald - December 1, 2019

posted Dec 1, 2019, 5:54 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Dec 1, 2019, 5:58 PM ]

Hey Hornet Families,

Welcome back! I hope you all had restful breaks that allowed you to spend time with some of your favorite people. Mine was a much-needed opportunity to reflect, give thanks, and spend time with those who make my days better. I learned how skilled my 6 year old is at playing Skip-Bo so a week of family game nights was time well-spent. Being part of the Hornet Family brings a lot of joy for me so I am looking forward to seeing our students and staff back on campus this week. I am also looking forward to getting away from the holiday desserts that have overtaken my house. (I ate) too much banana pudding.

We will follow a normal bell schedule all this week. The two following weeks will be filled with all sorts of odd schedules and exams (Final Exams, District Benchmark Testing). Students will get access to the testing schedules in Advisory this week and have opportunities to practice some stress-relief techniques that can help them during this busy period. Be ready to talk about this at home. We are also looking forward to a host of concerts since our Fine Arts department shows off their stuff as we lead into Winter Break. I hope to see you at one of the concerts or Athletic events that will round out the semester.

Students are already thinking ahead to the second semester and so are we! Below is information about the schedule change process. We work to take care of the majority of these requests before students return so that the start to the second semester is smooth. Read below and help your students prepare just in case they are looking forward to possible changes. We will share this information with them on campus too.

Spring Office Aide and Student Aide Forms

  • List of courses with available seats posted on the Kealing website on December 12

Have a great week!

Hornet Herald - November 11, 2019

posted Nov 10, 2019, 5:52 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Nov 12, 2019, 3:23 AM ]

Hey Hornets,

Last week was a busy one!

Austin ISD high schools were on campus during lunch periods Monday, Wednesday, and Friday last week. Eighth grade students had an opportunity to visit them and ask questions. If you are an 8th grade parent, keep your ear to the ground for high school information. Now is the time to be talking to your 8th graders about plans for next year.

Thursday, our Theater One Act Play had a second place UIL zone showing and brought home a number of medals. It was tight and they came in about 30 seconds under the time limit. The phenomenal show in the end was saved by incredible stage management. Kudos to all of the students and Ms. Pena-Brooks for the work that went into this performance!

Thursday evening marked another Magnet Showcase. Families were lined up before 5:00 pm like the running of the bulls, held in place by a rope and two committed parent volunteers. Altogether, our parent volunteers helped check in over 500 prospective families. Student volunteers were stellar representatives of Kealing throughout the evening and the KMS Fine Arts department put on a show. Our staff had fun displaying all that magnet program has to offer and who we are as a school.

Friday we had a pretty full house for the choir-sponsored fall festival. The students had a great time and a good number of pies were thrown at Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Drummond, Ms. Scott, and Ms. Strickland. They were good sports but I am sure they had dreams (or nightmares) of whipped cream this weekend. The haunted hallway was a hit, face-painting resulted in some magic, and there was a lot more to see and do.

It took a lot of parent support to successfully tackle all of last week’s events. Thanks to all parents who volunteered on campus, dropped off materials, served as taxi drivers, and cheered students on throughout the week. We could not have done it without you!

Have a great week!

Hornet Herald: November 3, 2019

posted Nov 4, 2019, 4:26 AM by KMS Hornets

Hello Hornet Families,

Last week was a busy, productive week. We saw cooler temperatures, creative costumes, and critical thinking in classrooms. It was a fun one and I think we all probably needed the extra hour we gained over the weekend!

I received a few emails about religious materials being passed out to students after school as they boarded school buses. Anyone, including members of religious groups, may distribute literature on public sidewalks. Since the sidewalks in front of the school are owned by the city, we are only able to intervene when addressing a safety concern. I encourage you to talk to your children about whether you would like them to take literature that is being handed out in public. Based on previous years, I would expect this to happen again in the spring semester.

8th Grade Chromebook Rollout Was a Success
Chromebooks were deployed to over 350 students in less than 90 minutes last week. Our district and campus staff did a great job organizing and we could not have moved as smoothly without the help from our parent volunteers. Here are some parent tips to help your students get used to managing these devices:
- Remind your student to charge their devices every evening. They can hold a charge throughout the day if they are ready to go.
- Be sure that your student has a lock to use in P.E./Athletics. Is it important that these devices are properly stored.
- Any breaks, lost items, or other problems should be reported to the Ms. Williams in the library as soon as possible.
- We hope that no families will have to pay for lost items but, just in case, we will be adding items to School Cash Online in the next week     .
Did your 8th grade student miss the boat? It's not too late! Students can still return paper concent forms to the library. Ms. Williams will send passes for these students to pick up their devices thoughout the week.

Friday Think Tank and Late Buses
Friday Think Tank is not seeing more that three faces each week so this will be the last week it is available. Please plan accordingly. All students will need to have plans to leave right after school or plans to be picked up directly following their after school activity. Our Friday late bus numbers are pretty low too with less than five total riding last Friday. We will be polling our coaches and athletes this week before decisions are made but we are strongly considering suspending Friday late buses too. I'll keep you posted!

School Changes
Austin ISD released an updated School Changes Proposal. I encourage you to take a look at this document so that you know which options are on the table as the district works to improve the educational opportunities available to our students. There will be multiple opportunities for community engagement and I will let you know when there are conversations specific to Kealing.

Have a great week!

Hornet Herald - October 27, 2019

posted Oct 27, 2019, 6:05 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Oct 27, 2019, 6:08 PM ]

Hey Hornets,

It's Halloween week and we look forward to seeing our students and staff who choose to wear their festive gear to school. Remind your students of the restrictions so they'll come prepared in a costume that fits the bill.

We are still working to simplify the lunch transition period and our students gave some great feedback last week. The length of the lunch lines was expressed as a serious problem and we are glad to be adding additional staff members. In the next few weeks the third lunch line will be opening which should help speed things up quite a bit. We will be making some additional adjustments this week to help with a smooth, safe transition. Please help us by encouraging your students to travel the path shared by their teachers and to use walking feet on the way to lunch. It has improved so much already and we look forward to making positve changes to give the students more ownership this week!

The Chevron Fuel Your School Challenge is still ging and about $1600 worth of projects have been funded so far for Kealing staff. The challenge runs through Thursday so if you are filling up at all this week, consider going to a Chevron. The funds being raised will benefit a number of Austin ISD schools, Kealing included.

8th grade parents, if you have not already returned the Chromebook consent form through the AISD cloud or through the paper form, time is running out. We have a response rate of about 60% and would like to be at 100% by the end of the day tomorrow. Click here to find the online form. You can also download the paper copy or just stop by campus to submit a copy.

We're off to another week of learning. This Friday we'll be showing a movie and doing some other fun activities on campus. This is a free, low output evening event and we encourage you to stop by at 6:00 pm if you are around.

Have a great week!

Hornet Herald - October 20, 2019

posted Oct 20, 2019, 7:07 PM by KMS Hornets

Hey Hornets,

Our teachers have pulled back a bit on technology use to allow us to make it through October on our cell phone free campus. We are excited that the “pull back” is coming to a close since all of our 8th grade students have the opportunity to check out a Chromebook for individual use in the coming weeks. This will allow us to redistribute the Chromebooks that we have on campus right now to prioritize courses that primarily serve 6th and 7th graders.

ALL 8TH GRADE PARENTS – STUDENT DEVICES

This week 8th grade students will bring home paper copies of the Chromebook Everyone to 1 consent form. To simplify consent tracking for our campus, we encourage you complete the consent form online by following the steps below:

  1. Go to my.austinisd.org
  2. Sign into the cloud with the usual log in.
  3. Click the magnify glass and search for “Everyone to one”
  4. Click the tile and follow the instructions.

The form allows parents to choose from three options:

  1. I want my child to have AISD technology assigned to them.
  2. I want my child to use their personal device.
  3. No, I do not want my child to have AISD technology assigned to them.

We ask that all 8th grade parents submit the form either online or through the use of the paper copy so that we know what to expect for each student. Students will not be assigned a Chromebook unless they have parental consent.

VISITING CAMPUS AFTER HOURS

All visitors must check in at the front office. If you are visiting a teacher or volunteering with a club, stop by the front window to sign in. If you come on campus after 3:30 pm to pick up your student, look for them in Think Tank in the cafeteria because the front window closes at 3:30 pm.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING!

For those of you who are new Kealing parents, the costume rumors are true. Kealing staff and students celebrate Halloween in style. Here are a few costume reminders as your students begin to plan this week:

  • Masks are not allowed.
  • Face coverings of any kind are not allowed.
  • Weapons, real or fake, are not allowed.
We look forward to seeing Hornets in costume on October 31!

Homework Hiatus is coming up this week so we hope you have some fun time planned with friends and family. The forecast is showing legit fall weather Saturday. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the 6o degree weather comes to fruition. Have a great week!

Kind regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Last week was thrilling. From pep rallies to dress up days, we enjoyed seeing the Kealing spirit from both students and staff.

Homecoming football games were a success with the 7th and 8th grade teams winning handily over Lively Middle School. The special treat for all supporters was seeing the Kealing Pep Band in the stands. Our band has been sidelined due to rainy days the last few years but the weather was kind to us this year.  Check them out below if you didn't get to see the live action.

Our volleyball teams stood proud at Kealing and Lively. There were some tough three set matches and a combo of wins and losses. The teamwork and fighting spirit that defines Kealing Athletics was on display. We’re always proud of our students but Homecoming Week has a special feel. Thanks to all who came out to support!

Our staff will be participating in professional development on Friday, October 11 and Monday, October 14. All Austin ISD students are out on October 14. Kealing has a special professional development day on October 11. If you have students on other Austin ISD campuses, click here to check for their additional professional development days.

Wishing you all a great week!

Hornet Herald - September 29, 2019

posted Sep 29, 2019, 2:02 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Sep 29, 2019, 2:05 PM ]

Hey Hornets,

It's Homecoming Week and we're looking forward to seeing the Kealing Pride all over campus. Our football teams take on Lively Monday night at House Park and our volleyball teams take Lively on Tuesday, with 8th grade playing at home. We will kick off the week with pep rallies to celebrate our Athletes and give all of our students an opportunity to show their spirit. To make this work, we will operate a Pep Rally Schedule Monday and Tuesday. The schedule is all flipped around but don't worry, we'll make announcements at each transition to help students head in the right direction.

I hope to see you cheering on our Hornets Monday and Tuesday this week!
