Rally Day Feb 25
February 25 Austin 86th Session
PTA has a dedication to advocacy. Public education is our one guarantee for a brighter and better Texas. Each legislative session we hear about the need to improve public education, and history shows that following the conclusion of every legislative session, we all express our dissatisfaction with the results, wishing we had done more. By attending Rally Day, we are taking action — letting our PTA voices be heard while decisions are still being made.
Attending Rally Day is an investment of your time and resources that Texas students cannot afford for us to overlook.

Rally Day Agenda
  • 9:30 - 11:10 am Priorities Caucus, First United Methodist Church
  • 9:30 - 11:10 am Student Caucus, Sheraton Austin at the Capitol

6:30pm Thursday Feb 7 PTA Meeting: Attorney General Office presentation on Human Trafficking (Adults Only).
We have changed this meeting to the evening (Kealing Cafeteria) due to the amazing speaker we had at the last General PTA Meeting.  We are bringing her back!   “Human trafficking is a media buzz word that often conjures images of foreign countries or confusion with the ongoing immigration debate. This workshop cuts through the confusion, arms the participant with an understanding of what human trafficking is and is not and helps them recognize that this is an American problem with American buyers, sellers and victims. It focuses our attention on children who are regularly exploited but are unlikely to self-identify as victims or seek help. This seminar walks participants through actual cases prosecuted in the state of Texas for illustration, identifies the tools of traffickers and how they are typically utilized to obtain and maintain victims, outlines victim needs and the barriers to identification and rehabilitation, and gives participants red flags and interview tips that they can use to begin the identification process."

Invictus: Kealing ELA Students
All Kealing 8th graders will be performing Invictus by William Ernest Henley at Kealing Middle School.  Starting this Monday, January 28th, students can be "caught" from 7:25 am until 2:50 pm until Friday, February 1st and will be asked to recite this poem-in the cafeteria, the hallway, in classes other than English, in the stairwell from the top of the stairs to the bottom.

Our goal is to have all students embrace a love of poetry and for teachers and administration to join them in this effort.  If you would like to learn the poem yourself, a copy is just below.  Once a student recites the poem, he/she will receive a string around her/his wrist to indicate completion.  As a side note,  the last stanza of Invictus resides on a courtyard wall at Kealing.

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Yearbook and Inkblot looking for Sponsors
The 2018-19 Kealing Yearbook and Inkblot staff are currently taking sponsor donations. Donations support production (yearbook, Inkblot and KBTV), but most importantly are used to offset the cost of production, to make publications more accessible to all Kealing students. In addition, donations are also used to grant Yearbook and/or Inkblot Scholarships for involved Kealing students who wish to have a 2019 yearbook or Inkblot, but can't otherwise purchase one on  their own.

Interested sponsors should consider donating at their own comfort level. Patrons/sponsors will have their name published in either the yearbook/Inkblot or both, depending on donation level.

You can easily contribute using schoolcashonline. See attached instructions. Or checks can be made payable to Kealing Middle School and delivered to Ms. Scott in room 236.  THANKS!

January 10th - 7:30 AM Library General Meeting Presentation from the Attorney General’s Office on Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a media buzz word that often conjures images of foreign countries or confusion with the ongoing immigration debate. This workshop cuts through the confusion, arms the participant with an understanding of what human trafficking is and is not and helps them recognize that this is an American problem with American buyers, sellers and victims. It focuses our attention on children who are regularly exploited but are unlikely to self-identify as victims or seek help. This seminar walks participants through actual cases prosecuted in the state of Texas for illustration, identifies the tools of traffickers and how they are typically utilized to obtain and maintain victims, outlines victim needs and the barriers to identification and rehabilitation, and gives participants red flags and interview tips that they can use to begin the identification process.

Writing Tutor Volunteers Need for Academy ELA Classes
We are seeking parent volunteers to assist in English Language Arts classes in the Academy Program during the Spring Semester. These volunteers would focus on supporting students' writing through one-on-one conferences with students. Past volunteers have assisted students at all points in the writing process - brainstorming, drafting, and editing. This support is especially important in helping our 7th Grade students prepare for the STAAR Writing Exam.

If you are interested in volunteering in this way, please complete this form, and we will contact you as we prepare for the Spring Semester.  Thank you!!

MLK Day of Service - January 19
MLK Day of Service will be January 19.  We are planning a great day of events along with the District.  Our MLK Day of Service has turned into a AISD district wide celebration.   Buses will be bringing families to Kealing from other east side schools.  They will be lots of speakers and activities as well as clean up at the school and the surrounding neighborhood.   We are hoping to plant six  shade trees for the back of the school  We are dreaming of a row of oaks along the back parking lot and then maybe a ring of crepe myrtles up by the school.  In addition, we are considering re decorating the staff bathrooms.  If you are adult and we would love to have your help on the day Please click on this sign up genius.  We would love to have you.  We really need an interior decorator, hole diggers, tree wranglers , registration/people directors, and kid wranglers.  We will have signups for your children at a later date.

Kealing Center Stage Party & Auction Planning Committee
Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors on Chicon
