Hornet Herald - March 8, 2020

posted Mar 9, 2020, 4:49 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Mar 9, 2020, 4:52 AM ]

Hey Hornets,

Last week was a week of wins. We ended the boys basketball season with heart and saw serious growth in our student-athletes. The Pre-UIL band concert was a packed house and the students made it time well-spent with incredible performances by all three bands. Orchestra took home a host of top scores at their UIL competition and our soccer team took on Lamar in the zone final, ending with a 3-0 win. Congratulations to all of the students and teachers who lead these programs!

Stephen Mansolo is excited to be on campus as our new nurse. Click here for his welcome letter and stop by some time to say hello. He along with the district health team have been providing our students with timely support as well as answering questions students might have about Coronavirus. This week, thanks to his help, in Advisory we will share some tips on staying healty and avoiding the spread of illness. This was not in the original plan but is necessary in responding to the fear and uncertainty that many of us are experiencing.

We are off to another week of learning with the final countdown to Spring Break. Have a great one!

Kind Regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Hello Hornet Families,

Kealing students represented well at the Austin Regional Science Fair. Mark Sanchez was featured on the Austin Energy site. Take a look. Piyali Bhattacharaya, Shaayan Bhattacharya, August Marsee-O'Neil, and Mark Sanchez will all be moving on to the Texas State Science Fair. We are proud of their work and excited to see them progress to the next level. Our basketball teams are still moving too and round 2 of the A team tournament is coming up. On Monday, March 2, stop by Kealing to cheer on our 7th graders and 8th graders.

It's time to mark your calendar for Kealing Center Stage 2020! This adult-only event is the largest fundraiser for the Kealing PTA and an incredible opportunity to have fun together as a community. KCS will feature the Superfonicos, a duet from the Scott Strickland band, an array of food vendors, auctions, games and more. If you are interested in supporting as a KCS sponsor or know someone who is, click here to learn more. Sponsorships start at $100 and include at least 2 event tickets. Additional ticket sales information will be coming soon and we are looking forward to a great turnout. I hope to see you all there on April 26, 2020 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Carver Museum!

It seems strange that we are already in March and kicking off the 5th grading cycle of the year. This also means that we are 10 days away from Spring Break. It will be a busy two weeks of learning and activity, but the countdown is on!

Kind regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Special Performance for 7th and 8th Grade Students 3/3
The guidance department is excited to host a special performance from the Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble, a collaboration between Creative Action and Expect Respect (a program of SAFE). The ensemble will be performing their newest play Showmance: When Jealousy Takes the Stage. The ensemble is composed of high school students from all over the city. The students have worked with directors to write the original play that will be performed. Showmance helps teens (Grades 6-8) understand that it’s totally normal to have jealous feelings in relationships and consider how to cope when jealousy becomes overwhelming. The play explores: How do we cope with jealousy in our relationships? How can jealousy become toxic and damage our relationships beyond repair? How can we have honest conversations so that we can support ourselves and one another?

All 7th and 8th grade students will be viewing on March 3rd. Please be aware that the bell schedule for the day will be altered.

Special thanks to PTA/KMAG for making these performances possible!

Hi Hornet Families,

It's choice sheet time! If you are curious about what's being offered this year, visit the course descriptions and choice sheet page under the Student Life tab on the Kealing website. Reading the course titles will help you be a better sounding board for your student. There are a few exciting new offerings this year. 8th grade students also have the opportunity to choose from three high school credit Career and Technology Education courses that align to programs on many Austin ISD high school campuses. Middle school is a time to explore so trust your students to take some risks.

I encourage you to join parent organization meetings so that you are aware of what is going on for the rest of the year and so that you can participate in the redesign process. There will also be community conversations focused on questions and feedback about the parent organization redesign so keep an eye on the news and announcements page on the Kealing website. If you are unable to be present for these opportunities but want to stay in the loop, FAQs and additional information will be posted there as well.

The spring semester gets really busy really fast. Keep reading for more info about choice sheets, student climate surveys, and upcoming events.

Hope to see you on campus soon!

Kenisha Coburn
Proud Principal

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Hornet Herald - January 26, 2020

posted Jan 26, 2020, 5:26 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Kealing Families,

Each year, Kealing staff votes to acknowledge members of the team who make Kealing a better place. Ms. Nwosu is the Kealing Attendance Specialist and the 2019-2020 Staff Member of the Year. A long time Austin ISD and Kealing employee, Ms. Nwosu's impact is felt as she uses her expertise to arrange substitutes and account for student absences. Committed to Kealing students well beyond her typical duties, she has applied for two sizeable grants over the past four school years to support student mentoring and attendance recovery. Each day she sees a need and meets a need. We are glad to have Ms. Nwosu on the Kealing staff.

We are thrilled to have Coach Brynie represent Kealing Middle School as the 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year. She has served as a model for Physical Education in AISD, often writing curriculum and mentoring new teachers. In addition to all that comes with P.E. and Athletics, Coach Brynie serves as a campus leader, committing time to giving feedback that helps us better serve our students. The impact that our Physical Education Department has on the health and wellness of our students is immeasurable and we are grateful for Coach Brynie's contributions to this community.

Join me in congratulating these two members of the Kealing Family!

KMAG ANNOUNCEMENTS
KMAG Shadow Wranglers (parent volunteers) needed!
Wow, y'all... thank you to those that stepped up to help with this very important but quick volunteer job!
We still have 51 slots of 154 OPEN.
Tuesday, Feb. 25 has NO ONE in the am slot. HELP!!!

Remember when your "tiny, little 5th grade baby" shadowed at Kealing?
Remember what a (hopefully) great experience that was for them?
You may remember also that the shadowing program is 100% run by parent volunteers.

Don't worry, the *hard* jobs are already filled by tireless, generous volunteers but NOW we need you for the easy, quick and very important shifts of shadow wrangling! 45-60 mins in the am (before school, bring your current student just a few minutes early - think of the bonding time in the car; it's priceless) and/or 45-60 mins in the afternoon at dismissal. Think of the brownie points you'll get for picking up your sweet kiddo (instead of him/her having to ride the bus!), too!

Seriously, we know you are busy but if everyone could just sign up for ONE SHIFT, we'd be golden. AND THINK OF THE LITTLE, TINY BABIES that are coming to experience our great school. We want to make sure they have a great experience!

We still have 51 SHIFTS to fill of our 154. SIGN UP HERE.

PLEASE HELP AND THANK YOU!

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

I hope you had a restful holiday. The Coburn crew pulled out all of our board games and card games and had a great time unplugged. I hope your weeks off were filled with just as much joy.

The Kealing staff opened the spring semester with two days of valuable professional development and community building, so we thank you for taking on the extra day of vacation to support our efforts. We'll be back at it tomorrow and are thrilled to greet our students. We will have a modified bell schedule to allow teachers to pass out students schedules. Otherwise, we'll jump right in!

Please remind your student that elective change requests are due Friday, January 10, 2020. Forms are still available in the Program Office. They will not be accepted past the deadline.

I hope to see you all at the PTA Meeting and Principal's Coffee this Thursday. I will be demonstrating some exciting new features in BLEND. These features will be especially useful to our students with dyslexia and our students with oral administration accommodations and we are excited to have more resources to help us better serve our students. I encourage you to stop by for a preview!

Kind regards,
Kenisha Coburn
