Hornet Family,

Twas the night before school started when all through the school the teachers were shouting, "This sure does look cool!" The offices shine and the stairs have new tread, the Counselor's built a center and the nurse has a new bed. Our staff came back and I watched passion flow. I hope your students too are ready to go!

Surprise! In addition to song lyrics and movie quotes, I entertain myself with cheesy, joyful poetry. The last week with faculty has been filled with little pieces of joy as we have prepared to have our Hornets back for the 2019-2020 school year. We are ready and this skilled teaching staff is looking forward to greeting students tomorrow morning.

First day room assignments are live and online. On the first day of school, Tuesday, August 20, 2019, students will report to check-in rooms to receive their final schedules and campus maps. 7th and 8th grade students will find their rooms with the help of staff members. 6th grade students will be picked up by teachers and escorted to their rooms. The first day is a "pack light" day so a pencil and paper should suffice. Teachers will let students know when to start bringing other school supplies

We will be operating two lanes on Pennsylvania with additional staff support to try to get the traffic flowing well. Be ready for the morning drop-off tomorrow so that you can say goodbye to your Hornet with a smile!

Attention: 7 grade parents - Shot Records
Please turn in shot records showing proof of Tdap and MCV vaccinations to the school nurse as soon as possible. If a student does not have these shots by 9/6/2019, they will be sent home from school until proof of vaccination is given to the nurse. 

Kealing Cross Country and Hornet Run Club
Welcome Running Hornets! Kealing Cross Country and Hornet Run Club is back and excited to start our 2019 Fall Season. Kealing Cross Country is a club open to 7th and 8th graders and Hornet Run Club is open to 6th graders. We welcome runners of ALL running levels and experiences. Our season officially begins the first week of school and runs through October. We practice Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:00-4:30pm. At the meets, on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings, our runners race two miles at different parks around Austin. If you have a Kealing student who is interested in joining our club please check out our website or feel free to contact our new coach and teacher sponsor Shannon Jones at shannon.jones@austinisd.org

2019 Kealing Hornet Football
We are looking forward to another great season of Hornet Football starting in August! We have  some information that will help get the season started well.

August 20th- The first day of school and the first day of practice. We need all players to have a completed AISD physical packet, including the online parent and student signatures. All information can be found in the Physical Packet which can be picked up in the school front office or accessed online at  https://www.austinisd.org/athletics/forms

All players will need to provide their own football cleats, as well as t-shirt and shorts. Each player will complete 4 days of non-contact heat acclimation practices, followed by 7 contact practices in pads for a total of 11 practices before they are allowed to participate in a game per UIL. We have 14 practice days before our first game, so having the physical completed and being at practice everyday when school starts is really important.

Parent support is key to having a positive season. All the work done at home to have student athletes well rested, performing well in all classes, eating a nutritious diet, hydrated properly is greatly appreciated. We also know that it is a considerable time commitment to travel for practice pickups, as well as travel to and from games. The coaches and players appreciate your efforts to be at the games. In addition to these efforts, we do need parent support in providing pre-game meals as well as any post season celebration. There will be a parent meeting the second week of school to discuss and plan these efforts.

See questions above. They both have meeting dates. They both need volunteers. They WORK WELL TOGETHER to support all of our students and faculty/staff.

Kealing PTA is our parent organization that not only advocates for all Kealing students (including yours and mine), they support our teachers and staff, support our communities, support basically everything that has to do with Kealing and public education. Support your student by joining the PTA. Yes, it is a 501 c3, non-profit organization.

KMAG is our parent organization that supports the magnet program. There is no funding for programs like this in the public school arena so KMAG exists to help basically fund the exceptional education that our magnet program provides. KMAG also helps with all things magnet - shadowing, recruiting, etc. Think of it as a "booster" club. Support your student by donating to our annual no-hassle fundraiser. And yes, it is a 501 c3, non-profit organization. Your donations are tax-deductible. Check to see if your employer matches!

Hornet Herald - August 1, 2019

Hello Hornet Families,

During the summer months (actually most months) the Kealing administrative team entertains itself with movie quotes and song lyrics that describe the state of affairs. There are few students around so we have to find joy in other places! This summer has been full of gems as we have weathered all of the exciting changes in our building.

If you have been captured by the Lion King reboot, sing along with us. “From the day we arrived on the planet. And blinking, step into the sun. There’s more to see than can ever be seen. More to do than can ever be done.” That’s our song for the week thanks to the large amount of construction taking place on campus. It’s not completely applicable though because it will be done. The crews are moving quickly and it’s all coming together. We are finishing up week three of no air conditioning. Our custodians have done an incredible job keeping up the pace while staying cool.

There will still be work happening during this week’s new student transition camp but the building is safe. Our new students will get the full Chip and Joanna Gaines experience. Some part of the first floor will be in disrepair and the stairs look like they have seen better days. The new students will see the “before” next week and be wowed by the “after” on their first day of school. We are excited for the transformation!

This week’s movie quote comes from Poltergeist:

“Carol Anne – listen to me. Do not go into the light. Stop where you are. Turn away from it. Don’t even look at it.” 

You (parents and students) are Carol Anne. The Austin ISD Cloud is the light. Don’t go in. Turn away from it. Don’t even look at it. We are still making schedule changes and what you see will very likely not be what you get. Do not go into the light. The schedules are not yet accurate.

So what about student schedules?
See below for the updated scheduling timeline. I am pushing the mail date out a week to make some small structural changes to the master schedule. I apologize for making you all wait a little longer. I know you’re anxious! You will receive schedule verification and first day information when your schedule arrives in the mail. All questions or concerns about student schedules will be addressed through the schedule verification process so please read carefully once you receive your schedule in the mail.

Austin ISD Back to School Bash
This Saturday is the Austin ISD Back to School Bash and Safety Fair at the Parmer Event Center. Stop by for free school supplies, educational presentations, and health screenings. Visit the Austin ISD website for more information.

Supply sales are starting in stores and I am sure some of you are ready to catch some deals. The basic school supply lists for the 2019-2020 school year can be found on the Kealing website. These lists include items that students will need for their core classes. There are also a few supplies that will be delivered to Advisory teachers during the first week of school to be used across all Kealing classrooms. Since the students all take a variety of electives with different needs, be on the lookout for a few additional requests during the first two weeks of school.

Hey Hornets,

We've made it to mid-July and I have some updates for you. If you are receiving this as a former Kealing parent who wants out of the group, send an email to kms-hornet-herald+unsubscribe@googlegroups.comIf this does not apply to you, happy reading!

  

As you can see, the bond projects are moving along. We are looking forward to a larger and much-improved health office and a modified program office. All of the stairs will have new tread and a number of improvements are being made to support robotics and technology career spaces. Our students and staff will definitely appreciate the air conditioning system upgrade (unfortunately we are largely without A/C for the next three weeks while the system is being updated). Our main floor offices are shuffling around too and we will have a new and improved counseling center. It’s an exciting upgrade that will result in increased support for our students. The crew is moving quickly and has stayed on schedule so far. My fingers are crossed that the work will be all done before students return!

Volleyball Camp is Coming

Kealing Volleyball Camp is July 29 – August 1. Due to the A/C repair, camp is being held at Gus Garcia Middle School. The camp is open to all students who will attend Kealing during the 2019-2020 school year. The fee is $65 and scholarships are available. Our family weekend project was to make natural mosquito repellent jars for our backyard and I’m heading outside to see how well they work. I hope you are out enjoying the summer sun with your families too!

Hello Hornet Families,

The last week of school was full of action. We started the week with the 8th grade promotion ceremony. Four of our Hornets shared their personal reflections and thoughts for their fellow classmates. All participants walked across the beautifully decorated stage at the PAC and ended with their class poem, "Invictus". It was a beautiful occasion and a memorable send-off for a group of students who have grown tremendously over the three years they have walked Kealing’s halls.


Our 8th grade students took their annual trip to Shady Springs Thursday and had a blast. The teachers are once again the sand volleyball champs though. Maybe next time, kids! Yearbook signings, field days, and ice cream socials took over the campus as students celebrated a successful school year. At the end of the day Friday, Kealing teachers and staff met at the front of the school to wave students off for summer break. The buses honked and students waved back.


In the midst of the last week of fun, two more of our teachers brought home awards. Ms. Bruch was recognized by the Texas Medical Association as an Ernest and Sarah Butler Rookie Winner for Excellence in Science Teaching. She receives a personal award and the science department receives a grant in her honor. Anita Johnson receive a grant from the Austin Education Fund. Her goal is to move coding from her courses to core courses. She will be working with some of our science teachers to develop classroom “coding kits” and to build units that incorporate this fundamental skill. Kudos to her and thank to the Austin Ed Fund for supporting the project. We look forward to seeing it kick off next year.


As you can see, we had a positive end to a very busy school year. As we enter the summer break, we hope to all find time to enjoy rest and fun with friends and family. While you rest, you will certainly need topics to fill the silence that might come when you are attempting to make conversation with your middle schoolers. I encourage you to check out some of the topics that have been addressed in Advisory this year as well as the questions our students presented during the Human Sexuality unit. Read below for more info on these topics as well as important dates for the 2019-2020 school year. 


Thank you for sharing your students with us and for reading the last official Hornet Herald of the 2018-2019 school year. I wish you all a relaxing summer. For those who will be returning next year, I’ll see you soon. All the best to those who are moving on to new adventures!

HUMAN SEXUALITY – What do our students want to know?

Our science classes ended the school year with the human sexuality unit. At the parent training, some parents suggested that we find a way to share questions posed by students. ADVISORY – Topics to talk about.

Bias, Career Choices, Stereotypes with Teenagers, Day of Silence in support of LGBTQ-inclusive schools, Suicide Prevention, The Inspiring Harlem Renaissance, The Texas Teen Book Festival, Sharing Love and Choosing Joy, and Earth Day are a few of the themes that have been addressed. Hornet Herald - May 19, 2019

Hey Hornets!

Thank your students for succeeding through the long week of testing. Four days of testing, alternate class locations, and unexpected teacher coverage is a lot to endure in the next to last week of school. We were proud of how they all held it together, giving their best effort and respecting the testing environment.

My children have been channeling Princess Tiana for the last few days and singing "Almost There." Time flies. It feels like Spring Break was only a few weeks ago but we have reached the last week of the 2018-2019 school year. Our students and staff have given their all and are ready for a much-needed break.

Here are a few important notes for the week ahead:
  • AFTER SCHOOL: There are no after school activities or late buses this week so please plan accordingly.
  • 8th GRADE PROMOTION: We are excited to celebrate our 8th graders at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center on Monday, May 20, 2019 at 6:00 pm. There are other events taking place and parking is limited. Carpool if you can!
  • TEXTBOOKS, LIBRARY BOOKS, UNIFORMS, OH MY: Help your students empty their backpacks and search their rooms for KMS items that need to be returned. Our staff will be reminding individual students but your help makes this process go much faster.
  • BACKPACK-FREE DAYS are May 23-24, 2019: Students may carry purses, shoulder bags, and drawstring bags. All larger bags and backpacks will be collected and kept in the office so remember to leave them at home.
  • WATER BOTTLES AND SUNSCREEN: There are a lot of outdoor activities during the last week of school. Thought the forecast shows some rain, we are counting on some dry time during the school day. Plan for hydration and sun protection for the 90-degree weather.
Enjoy this week. We will wrap up the 2018-2019 Hornet Herald season next Sunday which will include end of year reflections, summer reminders, and additional professional development dates for the 2019-2020 school year.

Kealing Cross Country
We are excited to let you know that we will have our third year of cross country running at Kealing Middle School this fall for 7th-8th graders and 6th graders can also participate in "Run Club" with us. 

We had a great team last year with over 50 kids.  If you would like to be included, please send Shannon Jones an email at shannon.jones@austinisd.org to let her know your child's name, grade, running experience/interest and any questions you would like answered.  Please also click the link below to access our website and join the google group.
Some general info about the club:

Our goal for the club is to give our Kealing kids the opportunity to improve their fitness, to set personal goals and achieve them, to be able to compete with their friends for Kealing Middle School, and to learn to love the sport of running.

Middle school cross country races are 2 miles.  

Our season will start officially at the beginning of the school year.  We'll start some pre-conditioning in the late summer for those interested. The season ends in late October. We usually run between 5 and 6 meets throughout the season.

We typically train twice during the week and once on the weekend. (Meets would take the place of a weekend practice.) The time commitment is not much and will not prevent kids from playing another sport or joining another club.

We are also open to input from parents on what they would like the club to be and if they would like to help in any way. We very much appreciate the help of any parents to volunteer time, talent or donations to make this club great!  Let us know if you can be involved.

Interested in Serving on the Kealing CAC?
The Kealing CAC has openings for new members for the 2019-20 school year. There are vacancies for parents, business representatives, and a community representative. A parent member must have a currently enrolled student and cannot also be an employee of the district. The business representative must be able to speak on behalf of the business. The business cannot be a public-sector agency but can be a non-profit entity. The business representative may also be a parent. The community representative must live within the district, be at least 18 years of age, and shall not also be a parent or district employee. 

To apply, please complete and email the CAC application to Principal Kenisha Coburn at kenisha.coburn@austinisd.org.  The application is available here. Applications will be accepted until May 24.

For next year, Kealing PTA needs…
  • a Secret Pal Coordinator (the teachers automatically & electronically sign ups and the spreadsheet for their wishes is downloaded.  All you have to do is create a signup genius with the teachers names.  You might have to do a little solicit to ensure all teachers are covered at a PTA/KMAG meeting.  Then 4 X per year, you show up at the school and help log to ensure all teachers were covered and assist the school in delivering.  
  • one more person to  review the treasurer’s  work  ( approx 3 hours in July)
  • Someone who can make google sheets fly.  Can you wrangle our volunteer interests on paper and electronically and organize them in a format that our Chairs can access them.  You can do this from home and just pick the forms  up weekly in the beginning of the year.
  • Reflections helper  Learn the ropes so that you can take it on next year
  • KCS Fundraising helper.  Can you help make Kealing Center Stage awesome.  We are building out a great committee

Help KMS Students Prepare for Summer Reading!
Greetings, Kealing Family! 

The English Language Arts Department is hosting a year-end book swap as a way to get exciting, new books into students’ hands before summer break. If you have have any gently used middle school level books, feel free to bring them in and donate them to this project. We are looking for chapter books and graphic novels that will interest middle school-aged students, ideally between a 700 to 1300 Lexile level. Before the end of the year, ELA classes will visit the book swap, and students will have a chance to take home at least one book to read over the summer.

We will collect book donations from Monday, May 6 until Friday, May 17. If you have books to donate, feel free to bring them in and drop them off at the front office, or your child can also drop them off at the library. Summer Breeze Dance
Summer is coming! Let's celebrate! The Summer Breeze Dance will be held Friday, May 10th from 6-8 p.m. in the large gym! Wristbands are $5 and will be sold on Friday, May 10th during all lunches and at the door before the dance.  This is the LAST dance of the school year! So don't miss out!

Off-Campus P.E. (OCPE) for the Fall Deadline (7th & 8th graders)
Off Campus Physical Education or PE Waivers for the Fall semester must be submitted to AISD no later than May 15, 2019. Students will need a counselor's signature before they can submit their application. PE Waiver applications WILL NOT be accepted after May 15th. See AISD's website here for more info.

Interested in Serving on the Kealing CAC?
The Kealing CAC has openings for new members for the 2019-20 school year. There are vacancies for parents, business representatives, and a community representative. A parent member must have a currently enrolled student and cannot also be an employee of the district. The business representative must be able to speak on behalf of the business. The business cannot be a public-sector agency but can be a non-profit entity. The business representative may also be a parent. The community representative must live within the district, be at least 18 years of age, and shall not also be a parent or district employee. 

To apply, please complete and email the CAC application to Principal Kenisha Coburn at kenisha.coburn@austinisd.org.  The application is available here. Applications will be accepted until May 24.

The final Kealing CAC meeting for 2018-19 will be Thursday, May 9th at 4 pm in Kealing Library. All are welcome!

After-School Tutoring Opportunity
Would your student benefit from assistance in math? If that is so, the Kealing Algebra 2 team is here to help! We offer quality one-on-one tutoring with qualified Kealing students who are very familiar with the Kealing math curriculum. All students, regardless of their current course, are welcome to come! We hold tutoring sessions after school in the Kealing Library on Monday, Ms. P. Hill’s room on Tuesday, Ms. Johnson’s room on Wednesday, and Mr. Word’s room on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
To ensure that all of our students can receive only the best tutoring experience, we require them to fill out a short sign-up form prior to being tutored. Free Physicals available for Austin ISD students participating in sports and band
In partnership with Travis County Medical Society, Austin ISD will offer free physicals for Middle and High School students who want to participate in athletics, cheerleading or high school marching band in 2019-2020 school year.

Beginning next year marching band participation has been added to the state law for students to get physicals. In the 2019-2020 school year, all marching band and dance team participants will be required to obtain a physical examination. 

Pre-registration is required. Students or parents should contact their coach or director for more information. 

Physicals must be dated after April 15, 2019 to be valid for the 2019-20 school year. Forms must be submitted before participation in any activities. Physical forms with parental consent are returned to coaches and band directors.

Busses will transport students after school to the Travis County Medical Society/Austin ISD Physical Clinics.

The clinics are scheduled at the following locations and dates:

•High School: April 30, Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road (south)

KMAG Volunteer Opportunities for 2019-2020
We are looking for a few volunteers for our KMAG committees for next year! All are really small in time commitment. Descriptions for all the roles are at the bottom of the signup. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE WORD "CHAIR" - some of our tasks are just 1 or 2 people.

Please consider signing up and helping continue all the great work KMAG does to support the magnet program and Kealing! This is a great way to get involved but doesn't require lots of meetings, etc.

8th Grade Field Trip Co-Chair
8th grade field trip liaison - Help get the word out and get volunteers to work the end-of-year celebration that happens the last week of school and setup/decorate for graduation ceremony.

Audit Committee
Review the Treasurer books/records at the end of the school year for compliance. Give guidance for tax preparations.

Fundraising Team
Help with the annual no hassle fundraiser. Co-chairs are already in place; The team jobs are small but very needed! KMAG raises funds to support classroom and extracurricular academic activities. Time commitment is 4-6 weeks at the beginning of school. An annual no hassle fundraising letter is distributed to the Kealing community. Parents are welcome to explore other fundraising opportunities throughout the year.

New Parent Receptions

Remember seeing the student panel while your "new to Kealing student" took a math placement test? Organize these 2 Saturdays (usually in April) of new parent receptions by getting some snacks/drinks and also assisting with getting the student panels for each shift. 

Roadshows
Help the magnet director organize the recruiting roadshows by getting a few volunteers to help at each one.

Shadowing Team Members
The Shadowing team/wranglers helps with the day-to-day activities of checking in/out shadowing students.

Kealing PTA is looking for some event coordinators 
One event is the Martin Luther King Day of Service.  School volunteers, parents and kids come to the school one Saturday in January to do school and neighborhood projects  The coordinator chair would need to fill out a website form for Keep Austin Beautiful (to secure tools & neighborhood maps), call Dominos for the Pizza, contact the Kealing Garden teacher, and the Kealing PTA grounds chair. You might have to call a meeting with the interested parties to see if there is a specific project at the school. You will have to write the Sign up sheet that will be posted online.  You might have to pick the supplies at HEB and Keep Austin Beautiful, and then spend a Saturday at Kealing overseeing the event.  I know there are some wonderful parents in our community who are thinking "this is my skill set"  and I would love to chat with you.  Please contact Jayne @ president@kealingpta.org

Dear PTA Supporters,

We appreciate your ongoing support of the important legislative priorities that Texas PTA has set out to improve the health, welfare, and safety of students throughout Texas. Each legislative session, a new issue always seems to emerge that wasn’t on the policy horizon when the session began in January. HB 281 is this session’s surprise for PTA and I’m personally asking for your help to stop this bill.

HB 281 strikes down the core of our PTAs’ collaborative relationships with the school communities they serve and strips away the ability for our PTA Leaders and Members to effectively support the education of all children. While most policymakers indicate that the impact on PTA is an unintended consequence in their efforts to curb publicly-funded lobbying, there is still an unwillingness to change the language in the bill to protect the good work of PTA and the genuine efforts of families and educators around the state.

PTAs provide tens of millions of dollars each year in supplemental funding to our schools, not to mention the additional millions of dollars in volunteer hours. In return, schools typically allow PTAs the use of meeting space, electricity, water, and other basic needs to fulfill our mission of making every child’s potential a reality.

If passed in its current form, HB 281 will end this in-kind support for our nearly 2700 Local and Council PTAs. The fall festivals and carnivals that have been part of our communities for so long would likely become financially impossible for PTAs in Texas. Health fairs, parent education programs, field day, Reflections ceremonies, and teacher recognition – all are at risk because of HB 281. 

Unfortunately, one version of this bill has already passed through the Senate and HB 281 is awaiting a date for a floor vote in the House. I need our hundreds of thousands of supporters to step forward and help us defeat HB 281 before it reaches the House floor! 

Call or email your Representative today and tell them that HB 281 should NOT be set for a floor vote by the House Calendars Committee.

There was a flurry of activity this week by many concerned parents .  The actions at the Capitol were not going to be very good our schools or our finances.   One of the ways that parents got called to action was by receiving these emails.  Parents worked the phones lines, made testimonies and showed up at the Capitol.

ACPTA Back the Future 2019-2020  ( Sept 28 @ AISD PAC)
Please make plans to join us on September 28, 2019, for the second annual Back the Future event! It’s a free, fun event for families and open to all. Last year’s event featured 100 exhibitors and brought people from more than 70 AISD schools. Visitors enjoyed student performances, tons of exciting free activities, some great free food and lots of terrific information for your PTA. The goal is to connect local organizations with parent leaders, so you can invite them to bring great programs to your campus. Most exhibitors offer free programs and more than half offer programs in Spanish and other languages.

Free Shot Clinic
Friday, April 26, 2019
Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and MCV4 (Meningococcal) vaccines are requirements for all students entering the 7th grade. There will be a shot clinic at Kealing MS on April 26th offering Tdap and MCV4 vaccines free-of-charge. If you would like your 6th grader to participate in the shot clinic, please complete a separate consent form for each of the vaccines. The consent forms can be found on the Kealing MS website under “News and Announcements” by clicking on the link for “Shot Clinic - Friday, April 26, 2019.” 

Some students may have already received these vaccinations at their Well-Child visits. In this case, please submit their vaccination records to the school nurse. If your child is to be exempt from these vaccinations, please present the legal documentation to the school nurse, as well.

Help Us Reinvent Our #AISDFuture
Austin ISD is reinventing the use of its facilities to better align our resources to meet student needs. Please join us at one of the upcoming Community Workshops to participate in a dialogue regarding potential school consolidation, repurposing, and program planning.

Workshops will feature a panel of AISD staff, community members, planners and developers, who will engage the audience in a dialogue around the challenges and opportunities this process presents. Come gain a better understanding of the "reinvention roadmap" and participate in activities to share your perspective on what it could look like to come out of this process with school communities that are better and stronger than they are today.

Seeking Board Game Donations for STAAR Review
The Kealing ELA Department is looking for donations of new or used board games to use in "gamifying" end-of-year review in preparation for STAAR exams. If you have a one of the games listed below laying around at home, please consider donating it!

Kealing PTA Treasurer
Kealing PTA is actively looking for a Treasurer.  This is an important job, but it is significantly less work than an elementary PTA Treasurer. We have a joint meeting with KMAG, who we work closely with, on May 8 and PTA training on May 18.  We would love to bring on along with next year’s executive board as soon as possible.  You do not have to be an accountant to do this job,  there is lots of training, and Kealing PTA has great mentors in place.   If you are interested please contact Jayne at president@kealingpta.org

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony - CHANGE
Due to unexpected construction at the Delco Center, all May events were rescheduled. As a result, the Kealing 8th grade promotion ceremony is being moved the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center on Monday, May 20, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Please update your calendars accordingly!

Mathcounts End-of-Year Party!
We are wrapping up this year's after school Mathcounts club with one final meeting (party!) this week on April 16th, where we will celebrate another year of problem-solving fun.  Ms. Strickland has certificates and scores from the Chapter and State competitions, and she wants to hear from everyone about how to improve the Mathcounts experience.  Anyone who was involved in Mathcounts this year - in the class, the club, or a competition - are welcome to attend.  If possible, bring a snack or drink to share.  See you after school on Tuesday, and we will end at our usual 4:15 (with some Countdown Round, of course!)

Free Shot Clinic
Friday, April 26, 2019

Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and MCV4 (Meningococcal) vaccines are requirements for all students entering the 7th grade. There will be a shot clinic at Kealing MS on April 26th offering Tdap and MCV4 vaccines free-of-charge. If you would like your 6th grader to participate in the shot clinic, please complete a separate consent form for each of the vaccines. The consent forms can be found on the Kealing MS website under “News and Announcements” by clicking on the link for “Shot Clinic - Friday, April 26, 2019.” 

Some students may have already received these vaccinations at their Well-Child visits. In this case, please submit their vaccination records to the school nurse. If your child is to be exempt from these vaccinations, please present the legal documentation to the school nurse, as well.

After-School Tutoring Opportunity
Would your student benefit from assistance in math? If that is so, the Kealing Algebra 2 team is here to help! We offer quality one-on-one tutoring with qualified Kealing students who are very familiar with the Kealing math curriculum. All students, regardless of their current course, are welcome to come! We hold tutoring sessions after school in the Kealing Library on Monday, Ms. P. Hill’s room on Tuesday, Ms. Johnson’s room on Wednesday, and Mr. Word’s room on Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm.
To ensure that all of our students can receive only the best tutoring experience, we require them to fill out a short sign-up form prior to being tutored. Help Us Reinvent Our #AISDFuture
Austin ISD is reinventing the use of its facilities to better align our resources to meet student needs. Please join us at one of the upcoming Community Workshops to participate in a dialogue regarding potential school consolidation, repurposing, and program planning.

Workshops will feature a panel of AISD staff, community members, planners and developers, who will engage the audience in a dialogue around the challenges and opportunities this process presents. Come gain a better understanding of the "reinvention roadmap" and participate in activities to share your perspective on what it could look like to come out of this process with school communities that are better and stronger than they are today.

Seeking Board Game Donations for STAAR Review
The Kealing ELA Department is looking for donations of new or used board games to use in "gamifying" end-of-year review in preparation for STAAR exams. If you have a one of the games listed below laying around at home, please consider donating it!

Possible games: Connect 4, Jenga, Sorry, Trouble, Guess Who?, Hedbanz,  Candy Land, Battleship

If you'd like to purchase one from Amazon and have it delivered directly to the school, please see our wishlist here. Select Chris Hague as the "deliver to", address. Other games could also be accepted, but simpler games are better, as they are easier to modify and incorporate review questions. Free Physicals available for Austin ISD students participating in sports and band
In partnership with Travis County Medical Society, Austin ISD will offer free physicals for Middle and High School students who want to participate in athletics, cheerleading or high school marching band in 2019-2020 school year.

Beginning next year marching band participation has been added to the state law for students to get physicals. In the 2019-2020 school year, all marching band and dance team participants will be required to obtain a physical examination. 

Pre-registration is required. Students or parents should contact their coach or director for more information. 

Physicals must be dated after April 15, 2019 to be valid for the 2019-20 school year. Forms must be submitted before participation in any activities. Physical forms with parental consent are returned to coaches and band directors.

Busses will transport students after school to the Travis County Medical Society/Austin ISD Physical Clinics.

The clinics are scheduled at the following locations and dates:

•Middle School: April 16, Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road (south)
•Middle School: April 18, Delco Center, 4601 Pecan Brook Dr. (north)
•High School: April 23, Delco Center, 4601 Pecan Brook Dr. (north)
•High School: April 30, Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road (south)

Permission Slip for 8th Grade Field Trip to Shady Springs
The Kealing 8th graders will be taking a field trip to Shady Springs Party Barn on Thursday, May 23, 2019 (B day) from 9:00am - 2:00pm as a way to celebrate a great few years at Kealing. Permission slips have been passed out through Science classes and need to be returned to Science teachers by Friday, April 26th. This is an updated return date as we want to make sure we give enough time for ALL students to get it signed and returned. A copy of the permission slip can be downloaded here and a general information sheet can be found too. 

Talking to your Teen about Mental Health: Free Presentation
McCallum and Lamar are hosting a National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) parent presentation entitled "Let's Talk-Starting the Mental Health Conversation with your Teen" on April 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30

Kealing Center Stage
Thanks so much for everyone who attended, participate and pitched in somewhere along the way.  I have a special shout out to Dee Gonzalez, Jen Winkelman, Brent Winkelman, Sara Bircher, Ellen Anspon, Robyn Ostryniec and Nicole Longnion for the many hours of volunteering - simply amazing! and our very own Spiral Notebooks, the musically talented Kealing teachers who know how to rock!  There are many others, as it takes a village, and we are all doing it to so that we can support our Kealing community.  Thank you.

Digital Citizenship Guide - FREE to AISD Families & PTAs 
This was the guide that we presented at the last PTA meeting.  It is VERY informative.  

Stratfor, a local company with global reach, has created a new Digital Citizenship Guide for students ages 12-18. It’s part of Stratfor’s Cyber Security Basics series. The report’s author calls students in this age group the riskiest technology users because they are beginning to explore a wide range of technologies that are available.

This 108-page report is written to help provide tools and guidance for parents, teachers, and students about topics such as social media, privacy, cyber-bullying, online gaming, dark web, digital rights and more. Most users have to buy the report. The author is making it available at no cost to the AISD community. People just need to provide name and email address and it will bring up the report in a new window.  From there, they can download it.

REFLECTIONS
This year, and on its 50th anniversary, 948 Reflections entries arrived at the Texas PTA State Office for judging. Of those entries, 540 will be awarded and 30 have advanced to National PTA for national-level judging. Congratulations to Austin ISD's Vivienne Rayman-King (intermediate in Dance Choreography) for an Award of Excellence and advanced to National PTA. This is what Texas PTA talked about all the entries "We were so impressed by the entries we received. The planning, time, imagination, and sheer talent poured into each work of art was astounding – especially the different interpretations on our theme, Heroes Around Me. Thank you to our students for sharing so much with us. Thank you to our parents for encouraging the arts at home and in school. And thank you to our PTA volunteers for bringing the Reflections program to campuses across the state. Our State Award Ceremony will be held this summer. Please watch for ceremony details in the near future."

ACPTA Back the Future 2019-2020  ( Sept 28 @ AISD PAC)
Please make plans to join us on September 28, 2019, for the second annual Back the Future event! It’s a free, fun event for families and open to all. Last year’s event featured 100 exhibitors and brought people from more than 70 AISD schools. Visitors enjoyed student performances, tons of exciting free activities, some great free food and lots of terrific information for your PTA. The goal is to connect local organizations with parent leaders, so you can invite them to bring great programs to your campus. Most exhibitors offer free programs and more than half offer programs in Spanish and other languages.

ACPTA Advocacy - Plug into legislative actions for public schools in Austin ISD
Austin Council PTA (ACPTA) is building a resource pool and database of parents, educators, and community members interested in taking part in legislative actions throughout the current session and more importantly, beyond. To determine your interest area, please fill out the survey.
It has 7 questions and should take about 3 minutes. Completing it does not mean you are required to participate.
Once your survey input is received, you will receive a follow-up email within 1-2 weeks. ACPTA will contact you regarding ways to support advocacy efforts related to PTA legislative priorities such as Literacy by 3rd Grade, Juvenile Justice, Public School Funding Reform, Assessments, just to name a few.
The survey is in English and Spanish.

Hello Hornets!

This week will be a quiet week on campus since our 7th and 8th grade students will demonstrate some of their learning by taking the STAAR Test. Tuesday and Wednesday will be regular testing days and we will conduct make-up testing for the rest of the week for any students who may be absent. Our student have been working hard all year and we know they are ready to show what they know. Below is the schedule:
  • Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 8th Grade Math (except Algebra I testers); 7th Grade Writing
  • Wednesday, April 10, 2019 - 8th Grade Reading; 7th Grade Advanced Math (only students who take the 8th grade STAAR)
So that our 7th and 8th grade students are home early and well-rested, there will be no after school events or late buses Monday and Tuesday. Students don't need to do anything to prepare. That part of the work is already done! Please help your student get a good night of rest and be sure they eat a healthy breakfast so they are ready to go.

Our 6th grade students will participate in Field Day Tuesday and head to the Paramount Theater Wednesday. To add to the quiet testing environment, we will operate a closed campus this week. If you are hoping to stop by to visit or to eat lunch with your student, we'll be back to our usual high energy campus next week!
