Hello Kealing Families,

As you may know, April 20 is a National School Walkout Against Gun Violence in Schools. I encourage you to take a look at the message from Dr. Cruz regarding the National School Walkout.

Some of our students have asked to have an opportunity to have their opinions acknowledged and their questions answered. Civic participation is an important component of education and we know that our students are interested in a variety of issues that they see and encounter in their lives. Through a Day of Action on April 20, 2018, Kealing students will participate in town hall meetings, visit with representatives from organizations with different concentrations, and participate in activities developed by student leaders that allow students to address the issues that matter to them. This day is an exercise in civics through which our students’ voices will be encouraged and valued.

This week Kealing students learned about Action Civics through Advisory lessons prepared in the Generation Citizen course. They also had the opportunity to write questions about the topics they chose in preparation for the town hall panelists. The town hall will include a variety of guests including members of the Texas Legislature, the Austin ISD School Board, the Austin Police Department, the League of Women Voters, the Austin Chapter of the NAACP, the Texas Rifle Association, and Texas Gun Sense.
The Central Texas Food Bank, Think Bilingual Austin, Safe Austin, The Kindness Campaign, The Golden Hornet, and Lemonade Day are just a few of the community organizations who will be present to tell students about their work.

I encourage you to take a look at this week’s Advisory plans for the Action Civics lessons. You can also view a list of speakers who will be a part of the town hall meeting. The other activities will also be posted on this site Thursday evening so you can preview them and be prepared to talk to your students at home. Friday will be a day of learning, listening, and engaging and we hope that each student will walk away with ideas about how to be involved and have a voice in their communities.

We will operate a C Schedule on Thursday, April 19 to allow all students to visit all classes.

Warm Regards,

Kenisha Coburn
