Hornet Herald - September 25, 2016

Hello Kealing Community,

Last Friday, we were lucky enough to have Colonel Gregory Johnson visit our campus.  Colonel Johnson was in Austin to help for the national pilot STEM Scouts program and took time out of his travel schedule to talk to some of our students about his experiences as an Astronaut.  They were able to see video of the inside of the Space Shuttle, learn about the interactions between Astronauts from various countries, and view pictures taken from the inside of the Space Shuttle.  They also had the opportunity to ask a number of questions about what life was like on the Shuttle.  It was an engaging way to end the week and a once in a lifetime experience for our students.  This week is the last week of the 1st grading cycle and we will end it by kicking off Homecoming Spirit Week and enjoying the annual Lip Sync Battle.  Take a look at our calendar for dates and times of upcoming events.  We hope to see you soon!

Regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Teacher Wish List
Big thanks to you generous parents for already coming through for our teachers! We do have a few more items on the list if you missed out the first time. We will notify you periodically throughout the year of new wishes. I promise we won't harass you every week! Thanks again.

Special Thanks and Terrace Help Needed
A HUGE thanks to Kealing parent Tom Spicer for volunteering his time, talent, and tools to install a new door on our garden shed. It is much appreciated! We're looking for more help because KMS has received a grant from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to build and maintain 400 square feet of natural prairie gardens to attract and monitor Monarch butterflies with the goal of increasing the Monarchs. The KMS PTA Environmental Committee is teaming up with the Environmental Science/Gardening, Ecology, and Plant Studies elective classes to research, advertise, and teach others about the project and Monarchs as well as build and maintain the garden. We'll even be tagging butterflies we see this fall in hopes of our tags being found in Mexico! The NWF Monarch Heroes grant affords us the opportunity to buy supplies and plants, but may not go far enough to hire experts to help us create terracing with limestone blocks needed because of the slope in our garden area (located to the west of the school - is covered in plastic now to solarize the Bermuda grass). If you have experience in terracing or just building with limestone blocks we'd love your help! Please contact KMS PTA Environmental Chair Laua DiCarlo at lhdicarlo@yahoo.com or (512)5290-1701 (call or text) now if you have expertise, and if you'd just like to help day of mark your calendar for our 10/22 9am-noon work day.

Membership Drive
The Kealing PTA's fall membership drive is almost over, and we are just 60 parents away from our membership goal. If you haven't had a chance to join yet, please sign up at www.kealingpta.org. Please join today and help us fulfill our mission of supporting the education and success of all children at Kealing Middle School.
