Good afternoon Hornet Families,
I hope you had a successful first week back from Winter Break. Our science teachers had the students moving right away. Ms. Pogue's students made sure we all knew school was back in session - the pig dissections were successful if you can look beyond the hallway stench. Mr. Barton's students had what looked like a dance party in the hallway as they demonstrated some of what they've learned about the atomic structure. We also kicked off a new elective that were are trying for the first time this semester. A group of 7th grade students are taking on Generation Kealing, a rigourous, action-based, civics curriculum. They spent some time outside team-building this week as they get ready to select and address a community issue. We're all looking forward to seeing what they they choose to tackle. Our KBTV teachers and crew also worked this week to set up the new video lab in the library. As you can see, we hit the ground running!
I am sure many of you have seen results of the work in progress A-F rating that were released by TEA this week. Click here to read the Statesman Article and to search for ratings by school if you have not already had a chance to take a look. This Thursday we will be reviewing this information during the 4:00 pm CAC meeting in the Library. Mark your calendar if you would like to join us for this discussion. This will also be a February Principal's Coffee item so stay tuned for this meeting. While the state grapples with what will be the future of the accountability system, we will continue to focus on promoting achievement for all students and on building stronger school community.
There are also a few other events coming up that I want to be sure are on your calendar:
- MLK Day of Service on January 21: This is the largest community service collaboration that Kealing participates in every year, partnering with Blackshear Elementary and Huston-Tillotson University. The Coburn Family will be there ready to work. We hope to see you there some time between noon and 4:00 pm! Click here to sign up.
- The FABPAC is ready to unveil facility recommendations that will impact the future of AISD. Come to McCallum High School on January 24th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm to take a look at recommendations that are specific to Kealing.
Gear up for another busy week!

Dream Flags - Volunteers and Donations NeededKealing Middle School students will create dream flags, inspired by the Tibetan prayer/peace flag tradition, to line the hallways of our school. Each student will write their dream or wish for our community and world on a piece of cotton muslin. Their message will be glue to a larger piece of fabric that will be strung and displayed in lines together from our ceiling hallways. The ‘dream flags’ will serve a visual reminder of our individual and collective dreams as a Kealing community.
How can you help?

Ads can be placed by parents for their children, or placed by groups of friends who get together to commemorate this special occasion.
