Hornet Herald - January 30, 2017

posted Jan 30, 2017, 7:19 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Jan 30, 2017, 7:21 PM ]
Hello Hornet Families,

Thanks for patience.  I am sure you were waiting for the day late Monday Hornet Herald.  We had some important information to squeeze in - this was what I have coined "A Week of Wins."
  • On Jan 23, 2017, students that previously scored a perfect 7 out of 7 on the preliminary competition gathered to participate in the school-wide Kealing Geographic Bee. 7th grader Tushar Bhagawatula (who was the runner-up for last year’s Kealing Geographic Bee) outlasted all other participants and was crowned the Kealing Geographic Bee winner. After taking a placement test, he hopes to advance and participate in the Texas State Geographic Bee on March 31. Congratulations Tushar!
  • Kealing Science Olympiad teams were placed 2nd and 3rd at the Brazoswood Tournament this past weekend in a competition involving 30 other teams. Congrats Kealing Sci O!
  • The first Kealing Academy Science Fair took place last week and was a huge success.  I do not yet have final standings but I will announce them as soon as they are passed my way.
  • The Kealing Quiz Bowl Team took 1st place at the Cougar Clash this past Saturday. A 1st place win means this team has earned a spot at State (in Houston in April) and at Nationals (in Dallas in May)!
  • Ronan Spelman won 1st place going undefeated in the K-12 U800 division at the Casis Chess Tournament. The Kealing crew won the 2nd place team trophy in a close contest with Canyon Vista.
  • The Kealing Girls' Soccer Teams have also had outstanding wins to kick off the season. Please come out and support them this Saturday morning as they take on Fulmore Middle School.
Not to be outdone, the teachers also joined in for accolades, selecting Pamela Henderson as the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Henderson teaches Algebra I and Origami and last year's Academy Algebra I students to a 100% passing rate on the End Of Course exam. Her presence can be felt all over campus due to her participation on a number of committees as well as her leadership as a teacher mentor.  Most importantly though, her impact is made clear in her classroom.  When discussing her role here at Kealing, she said "I take pride in establishing Hendersonville, my classroom, a place where students feel safe and loved." I am thrilled proud to recognize Ms. Henderson as the Kealing Teacher of the Year.

This week will be calmer than the last and next week we'll be off to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention.  The Kealing Orchestra will be featured as the Middle School Honor Orchestra, which is one of the highest honors possible for a middle school.  I look forward to seeing what they have been working on!  Also, Ms. Parks and the Kealing Advanced Mixed Choir have been selected to participate as a demonstration choir at TMEA to showcase the best of choir instruction.

Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

The PTA is starting the process for electing a new executive board for the 2017-18 school year. The first step in that process is to appoint a nominations committee to help recruit and identify nominees for the board. March for Education
Austin Council of PTAs advocates for bills that help YOUR CHILD access better programs and help YOUR SCHOOL attract high quality teachers. The more the merrier, so join us:
  1. Rally Day: Texas PTA Rally Day is Feb. 27 from 9-12, where we will show the legislature we want the state to pick up its fair share on education funding! RSVP for Rally Day on Facebook here  or off Facebook here. . More info on Rally Day here: . Our goal is 100 attendees from Austin!! (So far we have 66.) Please invite your friends!
  2. Text Action Alerts: Sign up for Make it Matter Mondays, our new 2-minute action alerts sent straight to your phone. Text @acpt to 81010. You will get legislators' phone numbers and scripts to advocate for specific bills as they are voted on by the state legislature.
  3. Deep Dive: One of the biggest issues is that the state has reduced its share of paying for public education, and increased its reliance on local property taxes. This puts an undue burden on homeowners and school districts. Last year, the state funded only 43% of public education in Texas; this year it will be only 40%, and next year it is projected to drop to 37%. House Joint Resolution (HJR) 27 by Rep. Donna Howard would require the state to pay at least 50 percent of public education. This means more of your property tax dollars could stay in Austin ISD! Learn more here: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/Home.aspx .
