Hornet Herald - November 12, 2017

posted Nov 12, 2017, 5:55 AM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Nov 12, 2017, 6:04 AM ]

Good morning Hornet Families,

The first part of the 2017-2018 school year has flown by and we are already approaching the Thanksgiving Holiday Break. In the spirit of the season, during which we all take time reflect on our experiences and express our gratitude, I want to take an opportunity to thank all of the students, parents, teachers, and staff members who continue to make Kealing a great place to learn. Every day that I come to work I am renewed by the energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to try new things that are hallmarks of our campus community. I am most encouraged by this year's increased focus on our students' social and emotional well-being. Here are a few of the other great successes we've seen so far:
  • Our band program is moving forward under new leadership and our students had a strong TMEA showing with 40 students making district and 32 advancing to the region.
  • Our Science Olympiad team, supported by a group of committed parents, has a 2nd place award under their belt already.
  • We have had the largest Homecoming Dance and Fall Festival attendance in recent history, showing how excited our students are to be a part of this school community.
  • Homework Hiatus has been well-received. While we have a way to go in ensuring that our students are able to engage in the world beyond Kealing, this is a positive step in the right direction.
We're proud of what has been accomplished so far this fall, your commitment and support lets us know that plenty more awaits our students this year.

The coming week is busy, with a host of Athletic and community events. We hope to see you this Thursday, November 16, at the Kealing Community Thanksgiving Meal or at a game this week cheering on our students. I am looking forward to plenty of cooking, eating, and board games with my family and friends. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving too. We'll see you all after the Holiday!

With warm regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Classes are provided with a box of supplies to facilitate a number of fun and silly games in the classroom. To make more of these games we are in need of some supplies. Here is a signup list that would allow us to create a number of additional games for classes to use. If you have some of these around the house or can pick some up it would be much appreciated. None of these items need to be fancy or expensive, or even new in some cases. Again any of these supplies would be amazing to help increase the Social Emotional Learning experiences in Advisory here at Kealing. Please drop off supplies at the front office labeled for Ms. Thigpen Room 222

Free SCREENAGERS Showing
The McCallum Vertical Team is pleased to present the documentary Screenagers.

In the award winning documentary SCREENAGERS, physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

The film will be shown at the McCallum Theater on Monday, October 23rd at 5:30 and again at 7pm. It is open to all parents of students who attend McCallum, Kealing, Lamar and all feeder elementary schools. Parents are encouraged to bring their students aged 10 and up. Because the MAC Theater has limited seating, we're asking that secondary school students and parents attend the 7pm showing and that elementary school parents and older elementary students attend the earlier showing. Of course if this isn't possible for your family, either showing is open.

Below is a link to the Screenager's Website which has a movie trailer as well as useful tools to help you and your student navigate digital life.

Ultimate Frisbee Fall Practices
Coach Crouch, Kepner, and Natenberg are excited to extend the Ultimate Frisbee season into the fall this year in order to provide more time for players to improve their skills and play.  Here are the details:

WHAT: Ultimate Frisbee is a team field sport played with a flying disc. It combines elements of football, basketball and soccer, and requires agility, teamwork, and endurance. Off-season practices this fall will include skills, drills, and scrimmaging. These practices aren’t part of the ‘official’ spring season, but they will preview and lead into that team for the second semester.
WHO: All grade levels, all programs, all genders. No prior playing experience is needed, but good behavior and sportsmanship are expected at all times.
HOW: Be one of the first 40 players to SIGN UP each week and make sure that you’ve submitted your COMPLETED RELEASE FORM. The sign-up sheet will be posted every Monday morning outside of Coach Natenberg’s room (235), and any of the coaches above have release forms available. Players who do not sign up in time for that week or do not submit their release forms will not be allowed to attend Thursday’s practice. You must sign up for each individual practice that you wish to attend; the release form is on-time-only, but sign-ups do not carry over week-to-week!
WHEN: Thursdays from 2:50 to 4:30pm, through November 2nd.
WHERE: We will meet at the designated coach’s room each week and travel to and from Rosewood Park together. Players are required to attend the entire practice.
WHY: To learn the sport and be part of a team. To work hard, get exercise, make friends, and improve as a player!

In order to ensure student safety, we require additional parent supervision during these practices. One parent volunteer per week would go a long way in helping us make these practices a great experience for all the players. Please email Coach Natenberg if you can volunteer your time. KMAG Curriculum & Teacher Support Drive Update
As promised, we kept the KMAG Curriculum and Teacher Support drive to four weeks and are thrilled to announce that we raised $48,655. We expect to have another $7,600 in employer matching gifts coming in from this campaign. We could not have made it to our goal without the generous donations of 281 KMAG families.

Your contributions will be used to provide needed classroom technology equipment and supplies, support academic teams, and send our English and Science Magnet Faculty to national conferences, among many other projects. Your generosity allows our teachers and students to take learning outside the norm. With your help we are able to inspire discovery within and beyond the classroom.

Thank you for your support of the Magnet Program!

If you didn’t have a chance to donate but would still like to, KMAG accepts donations all year long. Just visit the following link: http://www.kealingmag.org/donate

CAMPUS NEWS

Include the date(s) you can help and your cell phone number in the message. Thanks in advance!

"Be the One" Presentation for 7th Grade
The Kealing Guidance Department made presentations to all 7th grade students through advisory beginning on September 19th thru the 21st. The goal is to instruct them on how they could “Be the One” to help a friend who is struggling with depression or hurting themselves. The presentation explains the symptoms of depression, signs of depression or suicidal thought in another person, ways to help friends cope if they are sad or possibly struggling with depression and finally when and how to get help from adults. Counselors encouraged all students to tell an adult if someone expressed thoughts of hurting themselves; this includes telling their parents, especially if they learn of a student’s thoughts outside of the school setting.

Counselors also shared with students the number to call a help hotline, the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine, at 1 (800) 273- TALK. or to text CONNECT to 741741 to chat with a crisis counselor. Please feel free to pass this information onto others. If your student communicates to you that one of their friends is having suicidal thoughts. Please either contact their parents or the police, who have mental health officers that can check on them in their home. All it takes is one person to “Be the One” to save another’s life.

KMAG ANNOUNCEMENTS
KMAG Meeting
Please come to our next KMAG meeting September 28th at 7:30 am in the library. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Shoaf from the Social Studies department. He will follow up on Mr. Natenberg's discussion last week of World Cultures, curriculum writing, and adjustments to Kealing. Please join us!!!!
KMAG No Hassle Curriculum and Teacher Support Drive - LAST WEEK
As promised, we are in the final week of the KMAG Curriculum Donation and Teacher Support Drive! We would like to thank the 149 families who have donated $29,500. So far, only 20 % of KMAG families have donated. If you have not had a chance to give, please ask yourself what amount you can give to support our excellent magnet programming and teaching staff. Every donation matters! Our faculty relies on additional funding to bring countless classroom and extra-curricular activities to our students and to facilitate instruction in the classroom. This year KMAG hopes to purchase new overhead projectors and classroom printers to replace and supplement outdated and non-repairable equipment.  Please note that we accept workplace matching donations as well.
www.kealingmag.org/donate/donation-form

KMAG supports unique curriculum programs, like the student-led project described in the video below. Thanks to the generosity of Kealing families, students had the resources to create a student-directed LED-light display, start to finish, with the encouragement and guidance of Kealing faculty who worked with KMAG to give them that opportunity.  Watching this video, you can see that even small contributions can come together to make a BIG difference for your kids.

Volunteers Needed
Please help! The KMAG Shadowing program is a parent- volunteer run program that pairs up prospective KMS Magnet applicants with current KMS Magnet students. This opportunity for the student to experience the Magnet program for a day has been a beneficial tool that many prospective Magnet students and their parents have used to help them decide if the Magnet program is right for their family. The Shadowing Committee needs a couple people willing to shadow the committee this year in order to take over next year. At least one chair-person is needed for this program, but it can be run by co-chairs. The Shadowing program also need volunteers to: run the Sign-up Genius for volunteers during shadowing in January/February, act as our Spanish contact liaison for our Spanish- speaking applicant families, be the head morning check-in Wrangler, and to be the Head Afternoon Wrangler. Please contact Gina Vance if you are interested in any of these positions.

Citizen Science in Acadia National Park
Hi! My name is Megan McDonald, and I am a 6th grade science teacher at Kealing Middle School. Last May I applied with JASON Learning to participate a program that sends teachers and students on research trips. I was awarded a spot on the team traveling to Acadia National Park.  We will be working on a research project there called Seas to Trees, which is studying the effect of climate change on the different ecosystems within Acadia National Park, and wildlife that lives there. I am excited to teach my students about citizen science and climate change! Follow my trip blog this week (Sept 17-23) to see science in action!   www.mcdlearningadventure.weebly.com
