"Be the One" Presentation for 7th Grade
The Kealing Guidance Department made presentations to all 7th grade students through advisory beginning on September 19th thru the 21st. The goal is to instruct them on how they could “Be the One” to help a friend who is struggling with depression or hurting themselves. The presentation explains the symptoms of depression, signs of depression or suicidal thought in another person, ways to help friends cope if they are sad or possibly struggling with depression and finally when and how to get help from adults. Counselors encouraged all students to tell an adult if someone expressed thoughts of hurting themselves; this includes telling their parents, especially if they learn of a student’s thoughts outside of the school setting.

Counselors also shared with students the number to call a help hotline, the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine, at 1 (800) 273- TALK. or to text CONNECT to 741741 to chat with a crisis counselor. Please feel free to pass this information onto others. If your student communicates to you that one of their friends is having suicidal thoughts. Please either contact their parents or the police, who have mental health officers that can check on them in their home. All it takes is one person to “Be the One” to save another’s life.

High School Presentations for 8th Grade Students
The Kealing Guidance Department is excited to announce that AISD high schools will be visiting our campus to give brief presentations during advisory in lieu of a high school fair.  Each high school will be given the opportunity to bring representatives to speak on the school’s behalf, provide a power point and have pamphlets/information available at the end to distribute to students. Please see the schedule below for visits.
  • October 11, 2017: LBJ-Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy (Magnet) & Travis Early College High School
  • October 18, 2017: Bowie, Anderson & Akins HS
  • October 25, 2017: Crockett, McCallum, LBJ Early College High School
We are waiting to hear from Eastside Memorial Early College High School, Lanier, Reagan Early College High School. When we know the dates of their visit we will post it on our website: kmsguidance.weebly.com.

PTA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Community Dinner
The PTA is hosting a community dinner on October 5th at 6pm in the Kealing cafeteria.  This is a wonderful way to extend your Kealing network and build a stronger Kealing family.  This is a free event and we hope to see you there!  (If you’d like to contribute to the dinner, please visit our sign-up.)

Reflections
Is your student creative?  Do they enjoy photography, music, drawing, painting, writing or dancing?  Encourage them to enter our reflections contest!  Last year we had multiple Kealing students reach the state level of competition.  National winners earn scholarships!

Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for nearly 50 years. Through the efforts of our Local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. This year’s theme is “Within Reach”.

Eligible students may enter any or all of the six art categories. Multiple entries within a single arts category are permitted.  Each entry must be the original work of one student and created specifically for the Reflections program based on the national theme. Each entry must also conform to the guidelines developed by the National PTA.

KMAG ANNOUNCEMENTS
KMAG Meeting
Please come to our next KMAG meeting September 28th at 7:30 am in the library. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Shoaf from the Social Studies department. He will follow up on Mr. Natenberg's discussion last week of World Cultures, curriculum writing, and adjustments to Kealing. Please join us!!!!
KMAG No Hassle Curriculum and Teacher Support Drive - LAST WEEK
As promised, we are in the final week of the KMAG Curriculum Donation and Teacher Support Drive! We would like to thank the 149 families who have donated $29,500. So far, only 20 % of KMAG families have donated. If you have not had a chance to give, please ask yourself what amount you can give to support our excellent magnet programming and teaching staff. Every donation matters! Our faculty relies on additional funding to bring countless classroom and extra-curricular activities to our students and to facilitate instruction in the classroom. This year KMAG hopes to purchase new overhead projectors and classroom printers to replace and supplement outdated and non-repairable equipment.  Please note that we accept workplace matching donations as well.
www.kealingmag.org/donate/donation-form

KMAG supports unique curriculum programs, like the student-led project described in the video below. Thanks to the generosity of Kealing families, students had the resources to create a student-directed LED-light display, start to finish, with the encouragement and guidance of Kealing faculty who worked with KMAG to give them that opportunity.  Watching this video, you can see that even small contributions can come together to make a BIG difference for your kids.

Volunteers Needed
Please help! The KMAG Shadowing program is a parent- volunteer run program that pairs up prospective KMS Magnet applicants with current KMS Magnet students. This opportunity for the student to experience the Magnet program for a day has been a beneficial tool that many prospective Magnet students and their parents have used to help them decide if the Magnet program is right for their family. The Shadowing Committee needs a couple people willing to shadow the committee this year in order to take over next year. At least one chair-person is needed for this program, but it can be run by co-chairs. The Shadowing program also need volunteers to: run the Sign-up Genius for volunteers during shadowing in January/February, act as our Spanish contact liaison for our Spanish- speaking applicant families, be the head morning check-in Wrangler, and to be the Head Afternoon Wrangler. Please contact Gina Vance if you are interested in any of these positions.

Hi! My name is Megan McDonald, and I am a 6th grade science teacher at Kealing Middle School. Last May I applied with JASON Learning to participate a program that sends teachers and students on research trips. I was awarded a spot on the team traveling to Acadia National Park.  We will be working on a research project there called Seas to Trees, which is studying the effect of climate change on the different ecosystems within Acadia National Park, and wildlife that lives there. I am excited to teach my students about citizen science and climate change! Follow my trip blog this week (Sept 17-23) to see science in action!   www.mcdlearningadventure.weebly.com

Teacher Assistant/Office Aide & Elective Change Information
TA and Office Aide applications will be available until the end of the day 8/22 in the PROGRAM OFFICE. They are due, asap. The last day TA/OA applications will accepted will be 8/31.

Student must be in 7th or 8th grade to be a TA or Office Aide. Students will give up one of their electives in order to become a TA or office aide. TA's assist teachers in organization, possibly grading and any other task a teacher needs help with. An office aide runs errands for the office; like walking passes to classes to retrieve students and making deliveries to classrooms. TA's & Office Aides must be responsible and have little to no discipline issues.

Elective change forms will be available on Monday, August 28th and will be due 8/31. Only lateral elective changes will be made. For example, if you want to change your 3rd period you must look for an elective available during 3rd period. On the 28th, there will be a posters by the main hallway detailing which elective has space available. Remember, there must be space in a class in order for a student to be put in the class.

Please also note that some electives have prerequisites that a student must meet to be enrolled in the class. NO Yearlong elective   requests to be removed will be honored.

We try our best to honor the elective requests in the order which they are received. We will be making changes until September 8th and we will notify you if we were unable to fulfill your request.

Think Tank Begins
As a reminder, all students must be picked up at 2:47 pm unless they are participating in an after-school, supervised activity on campus. Think Tank begins this week and opens at 3:30 pm for those who are on campus due to after school events. All Think Tank students must be picked up by 5:00 pm or prepared to take a late bus.

Kealing Clubs
The Kealing Club List is here, under the Student Life tab on the Kealing website. We will update this list as the year progresses and new clubs are added.

Calling All Runners
Kealing now has a Cross Country Club and we want you to join! It is available for grades 6-8 (6th graders run as part of the Run Club).  Our goal for the club is to give our Kealing students the opportunity to improve their fitness,  set personal goals and achieve them, compete with their friends for Kealing Middle School, and learn to love the sport of running.

Middle school cross country races are 2 miles and the Run Club events for 6th graders will be various distances. We will train/compete 2-3 times a week.  The time commitment is not much and will not prevent kids from playing another sport or joining another club. Practices are held Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3-4:15 with an occasional optional Sunday morning run. Meets will be held on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings and are not mandatory.

For more information, please see the Kealing Cross Country Club website or email the Club Coach, Matt Kleiman or the Club Sponsor, Shannon Jones

KMAG ANNOUNCEMENTS
KMAG No Hassle Curriculum and Teacher Support Drive
The KMAG Curriculum Donation and Teacher Support Drive is underway! Every fall KMAG reaches out to our community to request additional funding to supplement that which is provided by AISD and provide students and teachers with supplemental textbooks, special equipment, and consumable materials needed to sustain the caliber of academics found in the Kealing Magnet Program. In lieu of several fundraisers, KMAG asks for a single monetary donation in the fall during a four-week NO HASSLE Curriculum and Teacher Support drive. Our 2017-18 goal of $50,000 will support a KMAG budget that includes technology upgrades, teacher professional education, funding for classroom supplies, and extra-curricular activities.

Hornet Herald - August 27, 2017

posted Aug 27, 2017, 12:39 PM by KMS Hornets

Hello Kealing Families,

I cannot imagine a more exciting start to the school year. We took about 1200 students outside to witness the eclipse on the first day of school and ended the week stacking sand bags just in case Harvey decided to send us more than we could handle. Mr. Chavez found the start of the 2017-2018 school year to be meme-worthy and our science department is convinced that this will be their year! In addition to the unconventional events, we had the usual fanfare of watching and helping students find their classes. By the end of the week, the majority of the students had the hang of it so hopefully they are all ready for the start of official tardy marks this week. I hope things were as smooth and interesting for you at home!

This year we will have Advisory daily to incorporate more frequent opportunities for brain breaks, community building, guidance counseling, and a host of other activities designed to address the social and emotional needs of our students. The first was primarily focused on students getting to know each other and becoming familiar with campus systems. You are welcome to take a look at the weekly Advisory activities online by choosing “Advisory” from the Student Life tab on the website.

I am sure some of you are wondering where the links to the teacher websites have gone. Austin ISD has adopted an online learning platform known as BLEND, which will be the primary tool for sharing course information for Kealing staff. It is a modified version of CANVAS, which is a system currently used by The University of Texas and a number of other colleges and universities. The parent interface is not yet active but should be up and running during the second semester. I encourage you to have your student log in to the CLOUD to show you the system in the meantime. You can also learn more by taking a look at last week's Advisory lesson or by coming to the principal's coffee in a few weeks.

This year, based on the recommendation of our staff, we will be instituting a Thursday and Friday Homework Hiatus once per grading cycle to encourage our students to recharge with time that is focused away from school. During the Homework Hiatus, scheduled office hours and after school practices will be held but students will not be given new homework assignments. Instead of completing homework assignments or studying, we are encouraging our students to
take some time to relax with friends or family. Our teachers will take an email break too.

Mark your calendar for the first KMAG meeting on August 31, Back To School Night on September 5, and the first PTA Meeting on September 7. We hope to see you all on campus for one of these events.

Regards,

Kenisha Coburn

Hornet Herald - May 29, 2017

posted May 14, 2017, 2:40 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated May 29, 2017, 6:46 PM ]

Hello Kealing Families,

I am sure your children are chanting "three more days!" as we enter the last week of the 2016-2017 school year. This year seems to have flown by and it's hard to believe it's coming to a close. This stellar year has been marked by the advent of KBTV news, creative Homecoming floats, Kealing's designation as an AVID Site of Distinction, girls soccer triumphs and Fine Arts successes including State Honor Orchestra performances. We've seen the fidget spinner takeover and sulked while watching students use the new laser cutter to create their own. The academic risks that our students took and rigorous learning opportunities they experienced are too many to name. Altogether, we've had a year of succeeding and failing forward. Our students have experience winning and learning through struggle, laughter, and tears, exactly as they should in middle school.

You have served as volunteers, October and February slump pep-talkers, and taxicab drivers. This year, in addition to the academic expectations that you helped your students manage, Kealing filled your schedule with concerts, field trips, and athletic events too. You have partnered with us and contributed to our parent organizations, continuing to make Kealing better for all of our students. Thank you for your support in our work to create lasting memories for our Hornets. Wrapping up this year, I am even more proud to serve the Kealing community and can truly say that there is no better place. Thank you for your part in this unique, awe-inspiring reality.

Though this will be the last Hornet Herald until August 3,  keep an eye on our website for up to date information on transition camp and other back to school events. If you need anything throughout the summer, feel free to email or call. We will be closed during the week of July 4 and on most Fridays but will otherwise be around preparing for another remarkable year for our students.

On behalf of all of the staff at Kealing Middle School, I wish you all a summer of fun and time with family and friends, wherever these months may take you. Eighth grade parents, I hope to see you Thursday for the promotion ceremony at the Delco Center. For those who will be returning to Kealing next year, recharge and we'll see you on August 21, 2017!

With warm regards,
Kenisha Coburn
Principal

End of Year AISD Orchestra Honors!
Congratulations to the several dozen Kealing Orchestra students who participated at AISD's 2017 Solo/Ensemble Event at McCallum High School! Those two students returned to McCallum High School last week to have their performances taped for AISD Channel 22. Thanks to Mr. Jarrott and Ms. Berecek for their unwavering support for beautiful music!

Congratulations to our 46 6th graders who completed the Six Flags Read to Succeed program this year. For their participation, they are receiving a ticket to Six Flags Fiesta Texas to be used this summer between July 10 and August 27. Summer Reading Opportunities
Want your student to avoid the summer reading slide and not have to worry about traveling with books or getting them returned to a library on time? Be sure your Hornets make the most of thousands of digital books available to AISD students. With MackinVIA, students can ‘check-out’ up to 2 books at a time on their account. Books will automatically return to MackinVIA after 2 weeks unless your child renews them, so there’s no worry about due dates or late fees.
MackinVIA can be accessed through an app of the same name or via the website at www.mackinvia.com. The username and password are your child’s AISD student ID number (without the ‘S’).

MyON is another choice with thousands of books available to students. Log in at www.myON.com with the username being the student ID number (with the ‘S’) and password: aisd.

AISD is kicking off a new summer reading program that you can learn more about at www.5bookdive.org. Students can read 5 self-selected books over the summer, fill out the bookmark available on the website, and take it to BookPeople for a $5 gift certificate. The website has some book suggestions but any books can be selected for participation in the 5 Book Dive.

Kealing Community Feedback Needed!
Please click here by May 31 to take a brief survey and help us plan for next year. The survey asks questions about our new online learning/teacher website system that will be used next year, exemptions available through district of innovation, and Kealing clubs and organizations.

We'll be discussing the District of Innovation exemptions immediately after the May 25 meeting so please join us for that conversation.

8th Grade Celebration
All 8th grade students and families are welcome to join us as Kealing Middle School Celebrates each of our 8th grade students!

The celebration will be held at the Delco Center (4601 Pecan Brook Dr Austin, Texas 78724) on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 6:15 PM. Please go to kmsguidance.weebly.com to register for the event! Just click on the 8th grade celebration tab that takes you to the Google Form. Questions? Visit the FAQ on the website or call: 512-414 2444

*Please give extra time for travel due to construction around the Delco Center.

Need transportation? Call and reserve a seat on the bus by May 25th. Call: 512-841-6500

Think Tank and Late Buses
Below are the changes for Think Tank and late buses for the rest of the year.
  • No More Friday Think Tank or Late Buses
  • May 24 - Last Day for Think Tank and Last day for Late Buses
Please plan accordingly!

All Parents - Register Online for the 2017-2018 School Year!
You can register now through the Austin ISD Parent Cloud at my.austinisd.org.  Currently about 50% of our families are registered for the 2017-2018 school year. Register now to help us plan for next year and ensure appropriate staffing. Our goal is to be at 70% be the end of May! For more information, click here to access the Austin ISD registration guide.

Kealing 2017-2018 Summer Transition
Summer scheduling and transition dates are on the Kealing website. Click here to take a look and mark your calendar for next year.

District-Wide Book Drive
Kealing advisories are collecting books for a city-wide book drive to benefit AISD schools. Many campuses do not have enough "choice" books for students to read in classrooms or before and after school. Others hope to send books home with students for the summer. We are looking for books from all reading levels, Pre-K through 12th grade. Please have your child bring them to advisory. The Austin Council of PTAs will collect and distribute them. Together, we can share the love of reading with ALL kids in AISD!

Teacher Appreciation Week
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week in AISD. Please use this form to drop a positive, specific, personal anecdote or note to any Kealing teacher. You are not required to participate but we do encourage you to submit genuine notes as you see fit. They will be sent to teachers by email throughout the week for teacher appreciation. The notes will be screened before they are sent out, so please do not use this as an opportunity to give critical feedback. Please submit no later than 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5.

Hornet Herald - April 23, 2017

posted Apr 23, 2017, 8:58 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Apr 23, 2017, 9:21 PM ]

Good afternoon Kealing Families,

Campus was alive Saturday, starting with a full classroom of Spanish for Spanish Speakers testers at 8:00 am. The students were not thrilled to be up so early but seemed to handle the test well. Then we had a lot of guests on campus to commemorate our reopening over thirty years ago.  Pictures are coming soon. Hopefully we have a good shot of the alumnus from 1948 who joined us! Our Science Olympiad team also had a busy weekend traveling to Texas A&M to compete in the state tournament. Their 2nd place showing has earned them a spot at Nationals in Dayton, Ohio in May. Congratulations Science Olympiad Team!
The 2016-2017 school year is winding down and we are planning for 2017-2018. Our online registration percentages have increased but we have a long way to go! If your student will be attending Kealing next year, either in the Academy Program or the Magnet Program, you are now able to go online through the AISD Parent Cloud and register for next year. Early registration helps us plan staffing and budget appropriately so it is important that we get as many parents in as possible. Contact our registrar, Linda Rivera at linda.rivera@austinisd.org if you have trouble with registration. Summer transition and schedule mailings dates are up, so go ahead and mark your calendars if you will be with us next year

The next few weeks are pretty quiet since there are a number of testing days approaching. After testing ends, we enter the award and celebration phase of the year (finals are mixed in there somewhere too). Keep your eye on the campus calendar so that you don't miss anything as these last weeks fly by!

Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

CAMPUS NEWS
Kealing Cross Country Club
We are excited to let you know that we will have a club cross country running team at Kealing Middle School in the fall of 2017 for 6th through 8th graders!

The club will be lead by Kealing parent Matt Kleiman and teachers Shannon Jones and Tania Tasneem. Below is some general information about the club. Please feel free to contact Matt Kleiman or Shannon Jones with questions. Some general info about the club:
  1. Our goal for the club is to give our Kealing kids the opportunity to improve their fitness, to set personal goals and achieve them, to be able to compete with their friends for Kealing Middle School, and to learn to love the sport of running.
  2. Middle school cross country races are 2 miles.
  3. 3. Our season will start officially at the beginning of the school year. We'll start some pre-conditioning in the late summer for those interested.
  4. The season ends in late Oct / early Nov.
  5. We expect we'll have 5-6 meets in Sept and Oct, but will not expect all runners to be at all meets. This will really be runner/parent choice.
  6. We will train/compete 2-3 times a week. The time commitment is not much and will not prevent kids from playing another sport or joining another club.
  7. Contact Info: Matt Kleiman: mkleiman1@gmail.com, Shannon Jones: shannon.jones@austinisd.org
  8. Club website:
April 30th at 8am we would like to get us all together for a fun run to meet each other and give the kids an idea of what cross country running is all about. Parents and siblings are welcome to join. We'll require a few parents to come to ensure all of the kids remain supervised on the run. We usually have enough volunteers but more are always great to have. We'll meet at Kealing in the parking lot by the track and head out shortly after 8am for a run. We'll have different distances mapped out so kids should not be afraid to join us even if they haven't run at all.

We are looking for books from all reading levels, Pre-K through 12th grade. Please have your child bring them to advisory. The Austin Council of PTAs will collect and distribute them. Together, we can share the love of reading with ALL kids in AISD!

Volunteer on the Reconciliation Committee
If you are around the latter part of July and like finances or nonprofit management, please consider serving on the Kealing PTA's Reconciliation Committee. This is a very short-term commitment but essential volunteer role. The Reconciliation Committee performs the very important function of reviewing the PTA's books and records, with a focus on making sure that all of our financial transactions this year were done properly.

The Committee will meet 2-3 times in late July and then prepare a report with the committee's findings to present to the PTA membership at our first meeting at the beginning of the school year.

If you are interested in serving or have any questions, please email kealingmspta@gmail.com.
