Hornet Herald - March 26, 2017

posted Mar 26, 2017, 6:20 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Mar 26, 2017, 6:35 PM ]

Good afternoon Kealing Community,

It’s almost time for Kealing Center Stage, our PTA's largest event and most significant fundraiser. I hope your calendar has been marked for this important adult-only event!

The Kealing PTA has provided a number of resources this year to assist us in providing a quality experience for our students. This year the support of the PTA has allowed us to increase the number of Chromebooks available, supplemented funds for some grade-level field trips, offered resources for a number of service and campus beautification projects, provided speakers to help parents support their students, backed teachers in their professional development efforts, added umbrellas to allow students to enjoy the courtyard more frequently, and assisted us in preparing a much needed upstairs teacher work room. This is just a sampling of the ways that the PTA has made Kealing a better place for students, teachers, and parents.

We will continue to rely partially on the support of the PTA to keep up with the demands of 21st century education on our growing campus. This includes providing resources for our ever-changing curriculum, offering support for after school programs, and contributing to our effort to move to a 1 to 1 ratio of students to Chromebooks.
All of these plans will be possible with a successful Kealing Center Stage and through continued partnership with our PTA.

I hope you are able to join us on April 8 for a fun evening in support of Kealing Middle School, with entertainment provided by Kealing Teachers! Kealing Center Stage Tickets are $25 for individuals and $45 per pair. Click here if you need to buy tickets.

Also, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.  This school year marks the 30th year that Kealing has been (re)opened.  We are inviting all current Kealing families, future Kealing families, and Kealing on campus to celebrate this milestone. There will be a short program for those to hear about the past and present, performances by some of our Fine Arts students, tours through the building including some of the most unique spaces, line dancing, and a host of fun outdoor activities - Giant Jenga, bouncy houses, face painting, and field events to name a few. Lunch will also be provided.

As you can see, the month of April will be filled with events that are designed to acknowledge our past, celebrate our present, and prepare for our future.  I hope to see you on April 8 at the Spider House Ballroom from 6:30 - 10:00 pm and at Kealing on April 22 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Don't forget to review all of the STAAR testing and field trip reminders for the busy week ahead.

Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Hornet Herald - March 19, 2017

posted Mar 19, 2017, 3:18 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Mar 19, 2017, 3:21 PM ]

Good afternoon Hornets,

Welcome back (almost)!  I hope you have spent some time outside enjoying this beautiful weather and that you have had a relaxing Spring Break.

Just before the break, some of our students participated in UIL music competitions.  Congratulations to all participants in the Kealing Band Program and Mr. Hinojosa, Ms. Robison, and Ms. Trowbridge! Their UIL performances resulted in SWEEPSTAKES; all three bands received all 1's from the judges. The students put on spectacular performances, even after a week where it seemed that band members were dropping like flies due to illness! Our Orchestra also added to it's string of successes, with our three Orchestras receiving the highest ratings in the Region. Kudos to Ms. Berecek, Mr. Jarrott, and all of the students in the Kealing Orchestra program.

This edition of Hornet Herald has some important information and quite a bit of notable upcoming dates. The rest of this semester is busy and it all comes pretty fast, so we will try to get dates to you a few weeks earlier than normal. Also, feel free to peruse the Kealing website calendar to take a more advanced look at what's coming this semester.

It's time to set your alarms again.  We'll see you in the morning!

Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Hornet Herald - March 5, 2017

posted Mar 5, 2017, 6:47 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Mar 5, 2017, 6:59 PM ]

Hello Hornet Families,

We made it through a busy first week of March.

The 8th grade students who were randomly selected showed up to take the National Assessment of Educational Progress.  We exceeded the required 90% participation and the students seemed to complete the assessment with little stress or fanfare.  We know that taking another test was not an interest for most students so thanks for your support in our participation in this program.

It's UIL season and our Orchestras fared well, receiving superior ratings last week. Kudos to the students for their dedication. I'm not expert but I can tell that the students are playing pieces that challenge them and they are giving their best.  The judges agreed!

It's no surprise that the coaches of the world's most popular sport come from the World Languages crew.  Ms. Jaworski (German) and Ms. Ewald (French) put in an excellent first year as soccer coaches. The Kealing Girls' Soccer players worked hard all season and ultimately took home the crown, defeating Covington Middle School 2-0 in the zone championships. Check out this video of the winning shot!  If you see any of the team members, congratulate them on their sweat equity!

For those who are wondering, the Kealing Spelling Bee Champion is not finished yet.  Pramuthi J., a 6th grader, participated in the Zone 10 Spelling Bee against almost 50 contestants from across 3 counties and won. She survived the grueling, over 4 hour competition and now moves on to the April 1st Houston Spelling Bee to fight for a spot at Nationals. We'll all be wishing her well in her final preparation leading up to this event.  Good luck Pramuthi!

In the midst of all of the excitement inside and outside of the classrooms, I'm sure some of you heard chants of "5 more days" last Friday. We are all ready for some rest and time with family and friends. Hopefully the nice weather that's in this week's forecast will continue! There will be no after school events or late buses this Friday. We will shut down promptly after the 2:47 bell to kick off Spring Break.

Have a successful week and I look forward to seeing you all after this much needed hiatus!

Best Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

NAEP Testing - February 28, 2017
Kealing Middle School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 2/28/17. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessment because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.

Your 8th grade student may be selected to take a mathematics or reading assessment. The assessment also asks students questions about their daily routine and their educational experiences. For example, students are asked if there is a computer at home and about the amount of reading they do. Student responses are anonymous, and they provide context and meaning to the assessment results. Please visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/booklets.asp to review sample questions.

The assessment takes about 90 to 120 minutes for most students. March for Education
Grab your sneakers and join your friends for a walk from Kealing Middle School to Rally Day at the Capitol. Pass the word – EVERYONE from any AISD school community is invited to walk with us! We’re planning a fun event with others who care about public education in Texas. An early group will arrive in time to participate in all of the day’s events. A second group will get there in time for the main event: the Texas PTA Rally on the Capitol Steps. Before the walks, you will have a chance to learn more about the issues and make signs for the rally. We will have materials, so bring your creativity!
WHERE DO WE START? Kealing Middle School is at 1607 Pennsylvania Avenue. That’s 1.2 miles by foot from the Texas Capitol. You can park for free on streets throughout the neighborhood surrounding Kealing. Both groups will gather behind the school, which backs up to Rosewood Avenue between Salina and Angelina Streets. GROUP 1 LEAVE EARLY TO JOIN THE TEXAS PTA CAUCUS 7:30-8:30 Meet on the Kealing grounds behind the school building for coffee, information and sign-making. 8:30-9:00 Walk together from Kealing to the Capitol. 9:00-11:00 Join the Texas PTA Caucus to learn about issues that could affect Texas schools, and to find out how we can make a difference. After the caucus, walk to South Steps of Capitol together for the Texas PTA Rally. GROUP 2 SKIP THE CAUCUS & JOIN THE RALLY ON THE CAPITOL STEPS 10:00-10:45 Meet on the Kealing grounds behind the school building for information and sign-making. 10:45-11:15 Walk together from Kealing to the Capitol. 11:30-12:00 Rally on the South Steps of the Capitol. Rally Day draws people from across the state to show the Legislature how much support there is for public schools in Texas. The Legislature’s decisions have a major impact on school funding, high-stakes testing and more. The Texas PTA’s legislative priorities focus on strengthening public schools, ensuring meaningful assessment and accountability, supporting student success and increasing health and safety. Events include a caucus where you can gather information, a rally on the Capitol steps and a chance to visit legislators and their staff in the afternoon from 1:00-5:00. You can come for one event or stay for all. We hope to see you there! QUESTIONS? E-mail us at kealingpta@gmail.com

CAMPUS NEWS

The results are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347). The information collected is used for statistical purposes only. Your child’s grades will not be affected. Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.

There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP, but please encourage your child to do their best. A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available here. Contact Roxane Lopez at 512-414-2444 or at roxane.lopez@austinisd.org if you have any questions.

Kealing Center Stage Needs You!

Kealing Center Stage is looking for sponsors to help make this event a great success! This year’s event will take place at Spiderhouse Ballroom on April 8th from 6:30-10 PM.

3 Reasons to become a sponsor of Kealing Center Stage TODAY:
  1. Supporting the best education possible for your child. • The funds raised are used to provide technology, tutoring, teaching training, and other resources that improve the educational opportunities for our students.
  2. Positive promotion for your business • All our sponsors are recognized at the event. You may sponsor as an individual or family or as a business. Businesses get special recognition. To learn more go to http://www.kealingpta.org/business-supporter
  3. Early tickets to Kealing Center Stage • Sponsors have early access to tickets. Sponsorship starts at $100, which includes 2 tickets to the event. Regular tickets go on sale Feb 27th. Become a sponsor today! To sign up or learn more, go to http://www.kealingpta.org/kcs

March for Education
Austin Council of PTAs advocates for bills that help YOUR CHILD access better programs and help YOUR SCHOOL attract high quality teachers. The more the merrier, so join us:
  1. Rally Day: Texas PTA Rally Day is Feb. 27 from 9-12, where we will show the legislature we want the state to pick up its fair share on education funding! RSVP for Rally Day on Facebook here  or off Facebook here. . More info on Rally Day here: . Our goal is 100 attendees from Austin!! (So far we have 66.) Please invite your friends!
  2. Text Action Alerts: Sign up for Make it Matter Mondays, our new 2-minute action alerts sent straight to your phone. Text @acpt to 81010. You will get legislators' phone numbers and scripts to advocate for specific bills as they are voted on by the state legislature.
  3. Deep Dive: One of the biggest issues is that the state has reduced its share of paying for public education, and increased its reliance on local property taxes. This puts an undue burden on homeowners and school districts. Last year, the state funded only 43% of public education in Texas; this year it will be only 40%, and next year it is projected to drop to 37%. House Joint Resolution (HJR) 27 by Rep. Donna Howard would require the state to pay at least 50 percent of public education. This means more of your property tax dollars could stay in Austin ISD! Learn more here: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/Home.aspx .

Hornet Herald - February 12, 2017

posted Feb 12, 2017, 7:05 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Feb 12, 2017, 7:21 PM ]

Hello Hornet Families,

For the first time in over 20 years, an Austin ISD Orchestra was named Honor Orchestra by the Texas Music Educators Association.  The big performance was on Friday, February 10 in the Lila Cockrell Theater in the San Antonio Convention Center and the Kealing Symphony Orchestra left it all on stage.  The show was stellar and moved the large audience to deliver a long and boisterous standing ovation.  Congratulations to Mr. Jarrott, Ms. Berecek, and all of the students in the Symphony Orchestra.

I'm not sure what happened to the last few months but they seem to have disappeared and we are already planning for next year.  Next up.......choice sheets!  Kealing 6th and 7th grade students will be completing choice sheets at the end of the month.  To learn more about the elective offerings, students will be watching videos from each department during Advisory.  The videos are located on the website along with the new course bookParent, you're welcome to watch the videos too; they'll make you wish you were a student at Kealing.  Counselors will be meeting with all 6th and 7th grade students to help students complete choice sheets. I encourage all students to spend some time reviewing the videos and course book again to develop ideas before it's time to submit course selections.  I encourage families to have conversations about course selections while ultimately letting the students choose. This is their time to explore and possibly develop new interests. We'll make sure that their ready for high school regardless of their elective choices!

Also, this Saturday we are inviting families who live in the Kealing attendance zone to Explore Kealing!.  This is an opportunity to visit core teachers and electives while also participating in question and answer sessions about the Academy Program. If Kealing is your home school, encourage your neighbors to stop by.

Regards,

Kenisha Coburn
Principal

Hornet Herald - January 30, 2017

posted Jan 30, 2017, 7:19 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Jan 30, 2017, 7:21 PM ]

Hello Hornet Families,

Thanks for patience.  I am sure you were waiting for the day late Monday Hornet Herald.  We had some important information to squeeze in - this was what I have coined "A Week of Wins."
  • On Jan 23, 2017, students that previously scored a perfect 7 out of 7 on the preliminary competition gathered to participate in the school-wide Kealing Geographic Bee. 7th grader Tushar Bhagawatula (who was the runner-up for last year’s Kealing Geographic Bee) outlasted all other participants and was crowned the Kealing Geographic Bee winner. After taking a placement test, he hopes to advance and participate in the Texas State Geographic Bee on March 31. Congratulations Tushar!
  • Kealing Science Olympiad teams were placed 2nd and 3rd at the Brazoswood Tournament this past weekend in a competition involving 30 other teams. Congrats Kealing Sci O!
  • The first Kealing Academy Science Fair took place last week and was a huge success.  I do not yet have final standings but I will announce them as soon as they are passed my way.
  • The Kealing Quiz Bowl Team took 1st place at the Cougar Clash this past Saturday. A 1st place win means this team has earned a spot at State (in Houston in April) and at Nationals (in Dallas in May)!
  • Ronan Spelman won 1st place going undefeated in the K-12 U800 division at the Casis Chess Tournament. The Kealing crew won the 2nd place team trophy in a close contest with Canyon Vista.
  • The Kealing Girls' Soccer Teams have also had outstanding wins to kick off the season. Please come out and support them this Saturday morning as they take on Fulmore Middle School.
Not to be outdone, the teachers also joined in for accolades, selecting Pamela Henderson as the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Henderson teaches Algebra I and Origami and last year's Academy Algebra I students to a 100% passing rate on the End Of Course exam. Her presence can be felt all over campus due to her participation on a number of committees as well as her leadership as a teacher mentor.  Most importantly though, her impact is made clear in her classroom.  When discussing her role here at Kealing, she said "I take pride in establishing Hendersonville, my classroom, a place where students feel safe and loved." I am thrilled proud to recognize Ms. Henderson as the Kealing Teacher of the Year.

This week will be calmer than the last and next week we'll be off to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention.  The Kealing Orchestra will be featured as the Middle School Honor Orchestra, which is one of the highest honors possible for a middle school.  I look forward to seeing what they have been working on!  Also, Ms. Parks and the Kealing Advanced Mixed Choir have been selected to participate as a demonstration choir at TMEA to showcase the best of choir instruction.

Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Hornet Herald - January 22, 2017

posted Jan 22, 2017, 6:04 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Jan 22, 2017, 6:07 PM ]

Hello Hornet Families,

This past week was an exciting one for our staff.  At the end of the day Friday, we recognized our Kealing Middle School Teacher of Promise, Mr. Hague. As a first year teacher he has greatly improved the learning experience for a number of our English Language Learners.  He contributes by offering in-class support and mentoring, and he even took on the soccer coaching job this year.  Our students are lucky to have him.  We also recognized Ms. Alyssa Barrera, who is our Staff Salute award winner. Her teamwork, customer service, problem-solving ability, and never ending positive outlook are appreciated every day. She helps the Program Office run smoothly.  Please offer your congratulations to these two members of the Kealing Family.  The Kealing Teacher of the Year announcement is coming in the next two weeks!

When your students arrive tomorrow, I hope they notice the newly planted flowers in front of the school. This along with the trimmed bushes, weeded garden, and absence of trash are all a function of the hard work that was done this weekend as our community came together to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  Here are a few photos of the crew at work.
                                                        Displaying 20170121_135540.jpg    Displaying 20170121_143637.jpg
The weather could not have been better and there was a way for everyone to pitch in.  Thanks Laura DiCarlo, Theresa Spicer, Dusty Harshman, and Kara Kockleman, for their work in coordinating with Huston-Tillotson University and Blackshear Elementary to prepare for this event.  Dr. King's final book was titled Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community.  I believe we answered his question this weekend through unity, positivity, and work to strengthen our community.

Displaying 20170122_155021.jpg
I ended my weekend by viewing the final performance of Guys and Dolls. Wow - what a show! Sometimes I take the incredible talent of our students for granted. Ms. Pena-Brooks and Ms. Waggoner did yeoman's work preparing the cast and crew and the students ultimately put on a show that will be remembered. The set, the costumes, the casting, the acting, the vocals - they left no stone unturned.  You can see a bit of their work in the picture to the left.  The students smiled and hugged as the curtain closed and every bit of the celebration that followed was deserved.

Now it's time to gear up for the week. As a reminder, Monday through Thursday this week we will start the day with benchmark testing. Student rosters are posted in the hallways and we will help all students get to the correct testing locations.

Have an energizing and productive week!

Best Regards,
Kenisha Coburn

Hornet Herald - January 16, 2017

posted Jan 16, 2017, 5:43 PM by KMS Hornets   [ updated Jan 16, 2017, 6:02 PM ]

Good afternoon Hornet Families,

Our parents were busy on campus last week!  We kicked off the week with a coffee and sweet treat cart being wheeled around the building.  Our teachers and staff work hard every day to make the best experience for our students.  This little token of appreciation goes a long way in thanking them for what they do.  KMAG parents had the opportunity to hear from Academy and Magnet Social Studies teachers about their recent Professional Development experience in Washington, D.C. This would not have been possible without financial support from both KMAG and PTA. Also, thanks to a parent volunteer, you will see a slightly beefed up Hornet Herald moving forward since all morning announcements from the previous week will be included.  I've heard some feedback and know that some students miss pieces from the morning announcements.  We're working on making adjustments to get even more info home and this will be a huge help!

Looking ahead on the calendar, you'll see an altered bell schedule during the week of January 23 for benchmark testing.  Your students may come home talking about this as well.  The benchmark assessments are designed to give us feedback and another piece of information to guide our instruction for the rest of the school year.  We will be asking students to do their absolute best on the benchmarks but please help them stay calm.  There is also no need for students to spend time studying or preparing for these assessments.

I hope to see you all this weekend for the MLK Day of Service.  If you are not able to get your hands dirty with us this Saturday, you can still drop by to check out Guys and Dolls, Kealing's school musical. I heard today's dress rehearsal was top-notch, which is no surprise based on what I saw in last year's musical, Oklahoma! The upcoming weekend is sure to present some highlights of the 2016-2017 school year.  Don't miss out!

Regards,

Kenisha Coburn
